Probasco, Jr. That he wanted to become an artist, Whistler was then certain. In 1855 he sailed for France. He studied briefly in Paris with Charles Gabriel Gleyre, who was the teacher of Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, and Alfred Sisley, and he established friendships with painters Alphonse Legros and Henri Fantin-Latour. He also met Gustave Courbet, Edouard Manet, critic Theophile Gautier, and poet Charles Baudelaire. Whistler's earliest work in Paris was done in an objective-realist manner reflecting the strong influence of Courbet. A few years later he regretted having been so thoroughly seduced by realism. In a letter to Fantin-Latour he exclaimed: "It is because that damned realism made an immediate appeal to my painter's vanity, sneering at old traditions, cried aloud to me with the assurance of ignorance: 'Long live Nature!"'

James Abbott McNeill Whistler By Alphabet : Encyclopedia A-Z W James Abbott McNeill Whistler, American Art, Biographies Related Category: American Art, Biographies James Abbott McNeill Whistler Whistler was dismissed from West Point for insufficient knowledge of chemistry and from the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey, where he had learned etching and map engraving, for erratic attendance. In 1855 he went to Paris, where he acquired a lifelong appreciation for the works of VelAzquez and for Asian art, particularly the Japanese print. From these sources he developed a delicate sense of color and design evident in most of his mature works. His early work was largely inspired by the realism of Courbet. Settling in London in 1859, Whistler became known as an etcher, a wit, and a dandy. The Little White Girl (National Gall., Washington, D.C.) brought him his first major success in the Salon des RefusEs (1863). To advertise and defend his credo of art for art's sake, Whistler resorted to elaborate exhibits, lectures, polemics, and more than one lawsuit. In connection with his

"Whistler’s Mother") in the Fine Arts Collection, two etchings and a lithograph. A fourth work, an oil painting, has been designated as created by the School of Whistler. The etching entitled "Reading in Bed," is signed "Whistler" in the lower right corner of the plate. It has been dated ca. 1858. It depicts a person lying in bed reading a book with only the upper part of the bed showing. It was donated to Luther College as part of the Nils Remmen Collection in 1941. Container List Biography James A. McNeill Whistler, was born in Lowell, Massachusetts on 11 July, 1834 to Major George Washington Whistler and Anna Matilda McNeill. Although he had employment as an etcher for the US Coast Survey, Whistler moved to Europe in 1855 to pursue a career in the arts. He spent most of his life in London, while making many trips to Paris, France. He painted as a Symbolist, as opposed to his contemporaries, the Impressionists. He had a strong preference for decorative effects, and his work could be considered a precursor to the Art Nouveau. Whistler believed Modern Art should be a homage to beauty. Whistler died on the 17 July, 1903, in London. Born on 8 January, 1836, in Dronrijp, Denmark, Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema was an accomplished artist. His father was Pieter Jiltes Tadema, and his mother, Hinke Dirks Brouwer. At a young age, Alma-Tadema was accepted to study art at Antwerp Academy, and by the age of thirty, he was an established painter of ancient and medieval history. In 1870, Alma-Tadema moved to London, where he continued to paint scenes from Roman life. By the 1890s, Alma-Tadema had become a naturalized British citizen and a member of the Royal Academy. Alma-Tadema died in 1912, on the eve of WWI, and his reputation all but disappeared.
