Whistler, James Abbott McNeill American-born painter and graphic artist, active mainly in England. He spent several of his childhood years in Russia (where his father had gone to work as a civil engineer) and was an inveterate traveller. His training as an artist began indirectly when, after his discharge from West Point Military Academy for `deficiency in chemistry', he learnt etching as a US navy cartographer. In 1855 he went to Paris, where he studied intermittently under Gleyre, made copies in the Louvre, acquired a lasting admiration for , and became a devotee of the cult of the Japanese print and oriental art and decoration in general. Through his friend Fantin-Latour he met Courbet , whose Realism inspired much of his early work. The circles in which he moved can be gauged from Fantin-Latour's Homage to Delacroix , in which Whistler is portrayed alongside Baudelaire Manet , and others. He settled in London in 1859, but often returned to France. His At the Piano (Taft Museum, Cincinnati, 1859) was well received at the Royal Academy exhibition in 1860 and he soon made a name for himself, not just because of his talent, but also on account of his flamboyant personality. He was famous for his wit and dandyism, and loved controversy. His life-style was lavish and he was often in debt. Dante Gabriel Rossetti and Oscar Wilde were among his famous friends.

Yet it is in his oeuvre of original etchings and lithographs that his true genius becomes most apparent and his influence upon the development of twentieth century art is at its most far reaching. Whistler turned first to etching and his initial great works in this medium date from the mid 1850’s when he lived in Paris and met such artists as Degas, Legros and Courbet. The finest of these early etchings, now known as The French Set , show the work of an artist as worthy in his architectural views as Meryon and as perceptive in his figure studies and portraits as Rembrandt. His greatest work, however, still lay ahead. Whistler made London his permanent home in 1858. It was here despite the personal battles he fought, such as his lengthy feud with his brother-in-law, Seymour Haden, and his notorious legal war with John Ruskin that his truly revolutionary art emerges. this begins in 1859 with Whistler’s etchings of London and its dockyards (later called The Thames Set) where a much more free and sympathetic line is developed.

Studied drawing and painting in Paris, France, and in 1863 settled in London, England. Whistler held original views concerning his art, and made interesting experiments with color, in quest of novel effects. He also gained celebrity as an etcher, and is the author of etchings and paintings of established reputation and worth. His paintings include many portraits, among which are "The White Girl," "Portrait of my Mother," "Nocturne in Blue and Gold," "Harmony in Gray and Green."
