Lenbachhouse - Luisenstraße 33
In these days Lenbach House puts up exhibits of the municipal galery. Here you can see contemporary arts among municipal paintings and the "Blaue Reiter". Munich owes Lenbach House to Franz von Lenbach (he was ennobled in 1882) an artist and portraitist born in Schrobenhausen. Franz von Lenbach painted famous personages´s portraits like the chancellor Bismarck, Princeregent Luitpold, Emperor Wilhelm I and the austrian emperor Franz Josef I. His artistic status and name recognition as "Malerfürst" made him possible to construct a dwelling house for his family and himself with palatial dimensions. From 1887 – 1891 constructed he at Königsplatz from Gabriel von Seidl his villa by following florentinical example and laid the foundations of today´s artcollection. Lenbach House confronts two different styles. Here friends of Romanticism and Biedermeier meet admires of the " Blaue Reiter " of Kandinsky beyond August Macke to Franz Marc and those are dealing with supporters of modern art, a new art from Josef Beuys to Anselm Kiefer. The new acquisitions insert works of Josef Beuys, Alfred Kubin, Andy Warhol, Paul Klee.Young artists are promoted and get exhibition bases in the Kunstbau (Subway Station

H is two obsessions-personalities and aesthetics-combined to make him a pioneer in celebrity journalism. In 1974, Newsweek discovered that Interview Magazine, Warhol's 'house organ,' an homage to the beautiful and glamorous, gave rise to People and other fan-driven print voyeurism of the 1970s and 1980s. But even beyond this, Warhol was fundamentally a journalist.
W ith his most remembered statement-the motto of this magazine: "In the future, everyone will be world famous for fifteen minutes"-he revealed that he understood the key to what we now call media. Today, everyone, almost as much as Andy, likes to watch. Whether it be a gruesome car crash or an naughty sex scandal, people are riveted by other people and what they do. In his career, Andy ran with this idea. And his journalism allowed him to view even more.
W arhol's fascination with magazines started in early childhood. When he made pictures, he typically ripped out pages of Life and incorporated elements into his drawings by tracing images. As he grew up and began to study commercial art, he found himself continuing to turn to outlets in the press. In 1948, as a 20-year-old art student, he boarded a bus for a short trip to New York. His first two moves in the city were telling. Before he did anything else, he headed to the offices of Glamour Magazine and sought out its art director. Only after he saw her did Andy move on to his second stop, the Museum of Modern Art.
In 1949, Andy and moved to New York permanently. On his second day in the city, the young Warhol headed straight back to Glamour, where he found work. And when they misspelled his name (originally Andy Warhola-he was Czech) as Andy Warhol, he decided to stick to it. His very identity was thus magazine inspired and his earliest professional work appeared almost exclusively on the pages of Glamour, Harper's Bazaar, Vogue and others.

This work is an image of the well-known Elvis, and is an image that was only distributed through television or movies. The mass distribution of images and their consumption is a kind of "fame." Warhol focused on this aspect of contemporary society and was fascinated by it, and his works provided his viewers with a fresh look at this phenomenon. Chapters: Home Color interactions: Simultaneous contrast Peripheral vision Introduction ... Warhol's Marilyns Andy Warhol's Marilyn prints In the 1960’s Andy Warhol created several "mass-produced" images of celebrities such as Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley, and Jackie Onassis. Andrew Warhola, later known as Andy Warhol, was a key figure in Pop Art, an art movement which emerged in America and elsewhere in the 1950s and came to prominence over the next two decades. In the portait of Marilyn below, use the controls below to adjust the colors.
Drawing its subject matter from popular culture and often using mass production techniques, Pop Art was initially received with little enthusiasm by many in the art world.
Warhol had a fascination with things morbid. Sometimes, however, the results were astonishingly beautiful, such as the resonating, brilliantly coloured images of Marilyn Monroe. The Marilyn canvases were early examples of Warhol’s use of screenprinting, a method the artist warmed to, recalling that: In August ’62 I started doing silkscreens. … I wanted something stronger that gave more of an assembly line effect. With silkscreening you pick a photograph, blow it up, transfer it in glue onto silk, and then roll ink across it so the ink goes through the silk but not through the glue. That way you get the same image, slightly different each time. It was all so simple — quick and chancy. I was thrilled with it. … When Marilyn Monroe happened to die that month, I got the idea to make screens of her beautiful face — the first Marilyns.

B C D ... Z by birthday from the calendar Credits and feedback Andy Warhol (1927-1987) - originally Andrew Warhola American artist, film maker, the best-known figure to emerge from the Pop Art movement of the 1960s. Warhol eliminated individuality from his works and avoided serious interpretations of his art. He declared that he wanted to be a machine, something which makes, not paintings, but industrial productions. "I'd prefer to remain a mystery. I never like to give my background and, anyway, I make it all up different every time I'm asked. It's not just that it's part of my image not to tell everything, it's just that I forget what I said the day before, and I have to make it all up over again." (Warhol in Mike Wrenn's book Andy Warhol: in his own words Andy Warhol was born Andrew Warhola in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, as the son of Czech immigrants. His father, Andrej, who travelled much on business trips, died when Warhol was 13. According to Warhol's mother Julia, he had drank poisoned water. Warhol had three nervous breakdowns during his childhood. He suffered from the nervous disorder St. Vitus' dance, uncontrolled shaking, had a blotchy skin, and was taunted as Spot by his schoolmates. Warhol studied art at the Carnegie Institute of Technology and worked as an advertising draughtsman and illustrator in New York. The film director Emile de Antonio encouraged him to start as a free artist - Antonio considered commercial art real art and he also helped such painters as Jasper Johns and Bob Rauschenberg. Roy Lichtenstein's works Warhol had seen in the late 1950s and he was surprised that somebody else dealt with same ideas.

Born in Pittsburgh to Czechoslovakian parents, Andy Warhol graduated from the Carnegie Institute of Technology in 1949 and went on to work as a professional illustrator.
The conjunction of commerce and art seemed to lead to his big break. In 1962 the Ferus Gallery in Los Angeles held an exhibition of his personal artwork including the now-famous Campbell's Soup Cans. The soup cans made him (ironically, of course) a household name, at least in the art world. Andrew Warhola became the first and most famous member of the Pop Art set.
For many years after the exhibition he produced what is considered to be his best work, often based around altered and painted-over photographs, and poorly duplicated screen-print reproductions of his work.
Warhol's art often dealt with the superficial nature of the modern celebrity. When he is mentioned nowadays, it is most often in conjunction with a remark he made (although I can't for the life of me find out when or where he is supposed to have said it), that: 'In the future, everyone will be famous for fifteen minutes.'
A member of Warhol's circle, Valerie Solanas, is probably best known to the world for producing the SCUM (Society for Cutting Up Men) Manifesto, a pamphlet explaining how the male of the species should be systematically removed from society. In 1968, the year she published the manifesto, she shot Andy Warhol. His health never fully recovered (he once remarked 'I always wished I had died, and I still wish that, because I could have gotten the whole thing over with.'), and may have helped drive him to an early grave. After the shooting, Warhol concentrated on making experimental films.
