BRITISH CINEMA SIR HUBERT VON HERKOMER: ARTIST AND FILM-MAKER Michael Pritchard - Christie's, South Kensington, UK Sir Hubert von Herkomer RA was a leading portrait painter of the late Victorian and Edwardian period. His artistic career had begun as an illustrator in the 1870s for periodicals such as the Graphic which, together with his early paintings, had earned him a reputation as a social realist. For a short period from 1912 until his death in 1914 Herkomer built a film studio on his estate in Bushey, Hertfordshire, and produced seven films including a comedy and costume dramas. They were released and shown in London and elsewhere and at least one was taken for exhibition in the United States. To date none have been located. This paper will look at his career and the factors which led him to take up film as an artistic medium, the practical and innovative aspects of his studio and his film-making activities, his influences and his legacy to the film industry. Hubert Herkomer Born in Germany, Herkomer's family emigrated to America and then returned as far as England. Studying at the South Kensington Schools brought him into contact with Fildes and Walker . Herkomer took up 'social realism', based partly on his own experiences as a migrant, and contributed prolifically to the Graphic Following the death of his first wife, he married his mistress, Lulu, and built himself a small palace regrettably named 'Lululaund' in Bushey; on Lulu's demise he married her sister (which was legal by then) but did not change the name of the house. What is much more regrettable is that Lululaund was demolished in a fit of anti-German feeling at the start of World War II. Among the many rewards of success were a knighthood in Britain and a ' von ' in Germany, which he visited regularly. Like many other successful artists, much of Herkomer's later career was given over to portraiture, but nevertheless in he founded an art school in Bushey and enterprisingly diversified into musicals and films, with an further interest in motor racing for any dull days. Die Siedlung Phetine auf späterem Landsberger Stadtgebiet wird urkundlich zum ersten Mal erwähnt, diese Siedlung besitzt aber kein Stadtrecht. um 1160 lässt der bayerische Landesherr Herzog Heinrich der Löwe oberhalb von Phetine eine Burg erbauen, die Landespurch oder Landesperch genannt wird Nach 1279/84 bzw. 1291 wird Landsberg zum ersten Male urkundlich als Stadt (civitas) erwähnt, die wittelsbachisch ist. Im Krieg zwischen Ludwig dem Bayern und Friedrich dem Schönen wird Landsberg niedergebrannt. Wegen ihrer wichtigen strategischen Lage unterstützt der Herzog den Wiederaufbau der Stadt durch die Gewährung von Einnahmen und durch Verleihung des Münchner Stadtrechtes. Ludwig der Bayer verleiht der Stadt das Recht, Salzzölle zu erheben.
