Victorian Art in Britain Sir Hubert von Herkomer Hubert Herkomer was born in Bavaria. His father, a wood-carver emigrated to Southampton when Hubert was a child. He attended the South Kensington Schools from 1866, and studied under Luke Fildes. Herkomer produced engravings for the Graphic magazine, early in his career. He worked in a variety of areas, particularly social realism, including the famous paintings ‘ On Strike, and Hard Times,’ illustrating the inhumanity shown towards employees by both farmers and industrial employers at that time. Herkomer was a very successful, and versatile individual. He produced many portraits, some of them of male sitters being a little short of inspiration and flair. In truth this was less his fault than the requirements of the sitters to look sombre, serious, and dignified. He became ARA in 1879, and a full Academician in 1890. In 1899 Herkomer was en-nobled by Kaiser Wilhelm 11 (1859-1941), becoming a ‘von,’ which he always added to his name thereafter. He was knighted in 1908. He built a grandiose Victorian house in Bushey, Hertfordshire, named ‘Lululand,’ after his second wife who was killed rescuing a child from a road accident. At Lululand, Herkomer had his own theatre, where he produced plays, and his own operas.

Note: Hubert von Herkomer: A prominent member of the Royal Academy, Royal Water-Colour Society and the Royal Engravers, Hubert von Herkomer left Bavaria for Southampton in 1857 and studied at the Royal College of Art, London. Herkomer was equally well received for his paintings, sculptures and etchings. In this latter medium he was a tireless experimenter and he became accomplished in all forms of original graphic art. He founded and directed the Herkomer School of Art at Bushey, Herfordshire (1883-1904) and was the Slade Professor of Art at Oxford University from 1885 to 1894. Herkomer also wrote a great deal upon the arts. His most famous book, Etchings and Mezzotint Engraving , was published in 1892. In 1896 he was Knighted by Queen Victoria.

Die bayerischen Eltern wanderten 1851 zunächst nach Amerika aus, um dann 1858 nach England überzusiedeln. Das einzige Kind seiner Eltern sollte ein "freier" Künstler werden. Die Anfänge hierzu startete der junge Mann mit Holzschnitten und Stichen bei der Londoner Zeitschrift "The Graphic" in den 70er Jahren. 1875 gelang Hubert Herkomer mit dem Gemälde "The last Muster" (= der letzte Anruf) ein großer Erfolg. In den darauffolgenden 15 Jahren schuf Herkomer eine Reihe ernstzunehmender Bilder sozialkritischen Inhalts. "On Strike" (im Streik) von 1891 ist eines der berühmtesten. Gleichzeitig stieg Herkomer zu einem der gefragtesten Porträtmaler in England, Deutschland, und den USA auf. Die Bildnisse von Richard Wagner (1877) und John Ruskin (1879, National Porträit Gallery London) gelten als die besten. Dem Wunsch der Eltern, ihren Lebensabend in Landsberg verbringen zu wollen verdanken wir die Verbundenheit des englischen Malers mit der Lechstadt. Diese wird später dadurch verstärkt, dass Herkomer zusätzlich die bayerische Staatsangehörigkeit erwirbt.
