technique and how Vermeer used it
O f all the old masters' painting techniques, glazing is probably the most discussed but the least understood. Completely abandoned in the twentieth-century, it was once one of the most valuable tools possessed by painters. In recent years glazing has been called upon by many art historians and painters alike to explain every nuance in many a masterpiece, assuming an almost mystical character. In order to better comprehend glazing's technical complexities and true purposes, both the technique itself and how Vermeer utilized it in his own masterpieces, will be examine
Glazing a Red Satin Dress
step one
Vermeer first painted the so called underpainting , modeling forms and creating light effects with shades of opaque vermilion and flake white. Vermilion was the only strong red opaque pigment available, it had an orange over tone. A small amount of bone black was added in the darker shadows. This layer was allowed to dry completely

Over the underpainting Vermeer applied one or two very thin layers of madder lake, a deep ruby red, which is tranparent by nature.

Vermeer, Jan
Jan or Johannes Vermeer van Delft , b. October 1632, d. December 1675, a Dutch genre painter who lived and worked in Delft, created some of the most exquisite paintings in Western art. His works are rare. Of the 35 or 36 paintings generally attributed to him, most portray figures in interiors. All his works are admired for the sensitivity with which he rendered effects of light and color and for the poetic quality of his images. Little is known for certain about Vermeer's life and career. He was born in 1632, the son of a silk worker with a taste for buying and selling art. Vermeer himself was also active in the art trade. He lived and worked in Delft all his life. Not much is known about Vermeer's apprenticeship as an artist either. His teacher may have been Leonaert Bramer, a Delft artist who was a witness at Vermeer's marriage in 1653, or the painter Carel Fabritius of Delft. In 1653 he enrolled at the local artists guild. His earliest signed and dated painting, The Procuress (1656; Gemaldegalerie Alte Meister, Dresden), is thematically related to a

Johannes Vermeer
A Review by Mark Harden The exhibition "Johannes Vermeer", on display at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. November 12, 1995 through February 11, 1996 before moving to The Hague's Royal Cabinet of Paintings Mauritshuis, was the first ever exclusively dedicated to the paintings of the celebrated seventeenth-century master of Delft. This show brought together twenty-three of the thirty-six works attributed to Vermeer, presenting a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience a thorough survey of his stunning work. Vermeer chose as his motifs moments from ordinary life. He often portrayed individuals transfixed in quiet contemplation or in the performance of some seemingly mundane task: pouring water or milk, reading or writing a letter, donning jewelry. Yet the images are rendered with such expressive virtuosity that these moments are transformed into aspects of eternal truth. The means by which Vermeer accomplished this transformation is one of the arcane mysteries of his art. The inviting realism of his paintings makes them accessible to nearly everyone. A closer examination of Vermeer's technique, however, reveals that he often altered reality in order to achieve a more powerful expression of his theme. The manipulation of light and shadow, in particular, served to intensify aspects of his composition. The preparations for the exhibit have resulted in valuable additions to Vermeer scholarship. Most of the works underwent cleaning prior to the show, which not only presented their pristine appearance, but revealed many hitherto unrecognized subtleties in technique. Specialists have subjected the paintings to x-radiograph and infrared reflectography. These state-of-the-art methods provide a behind-the-scenes look at how Vermeer planned and executed the works. In many cases they reveal changes he made to his original composition, providing insight into his creative process.

Over the years, artists and art historians have marveled at the extraordinary visual realism of the paintings of the 17th-century Dutch painter Jan Vermeer. The painter's spectacular View of Delft, painted around 1661, and the beautiful domestic interior The Music Lesson seem almost photographic in their incredible detail and precise perspective. Since the 19th century, experts have speculated that Vermeer used a camera obscura, an early precursor of the modern camera. However, conclusive proof was never discovered, until now. In Vermeer's Camera, Steadman proves that Vermeer did indeed use a camera obscura to complete his greatest canvases. Part art-historical study, part scientific argument, but mainly a fascinating detective story, Vermeer's Camera argues:
