The Girl with a Pearl Earring
The Hague, Mauritshuis (Holland), Johannes Vermeer 1665
At that time, about 5 years ago, I didn't know just his name. I saw this picture on a book. But this picture is used without a name of Vermeer. Then I examined who painted this girl. In fact, it was not so difficult to find his name, Vermeer. 'cause he is enough famous for also people who don't have a specialty of arts. And while I examined little by little, I found lots of interesting things about him. One of them is his history. Here I introduce a tiny history. In 1632, he, Johannes Vermeer, was born in Delft, Holland. His father worked on silk weaver and art dealer. Then in 1653, Vermeer married Catherina Bolnes. Until in 1675 he died, he had 8 children with his wife. His estate, 19(!!) paintings, bequeathed to his widow and Maria Thins, who was the eldest daughter. But, in 1676, when was just one year after his death, the widow had to pay a debt of "617" guilders to a baker with two paintings.

23. Vermeer: Genius Ignored
Lucius Furius view on vermeer and how he was almost forgotten after his death.
http://www.serve.com/Lucius/Vermeer.index.html
Genius Ignored , Chapter 3: Vermeer [Summary: Vermeer was modestly successful as a painter/art dealer in Delft. After his death he was forgotten almost entirely.] Rembrandt was underestimated; his contemporary Jan Vermeer of Delft was completely ignored. Vermeer was modestly successful as a painter/art dealer, well-respected in Delft, but never gained much of a reputation outside. After his death, he was forgotten almost entirely. In the nineteenth century he was "rediscovered" and since the beginning of the twentieth has been considered one of the finest painters ever. Link back to Genius Ignored Table of Contents Johannes van der Meer was born on October 31, 1632. (In adulthood he shortened his last name to "Vermeer", apparently to avoid confusion with numerous other "Jan van der Meer"s.) In 1653 he married Catharina Bolnes. He was received into the local Guild of St. Luke (the artists' guild) that same year and by the age of 24 was an accomplished painter: "The Procuress" (Fig. V1), one of only three of his paintings with a date, is from the year 1656. Almost all his paintings have interesting arrangements of figures and objects the large, dark back of the soldier and the bright expression of the girl in "The Soldier and the Laughing Girl", for instance. The paintings I love the most, however, are those in which the humans are most central.

Johannes Vermeer
A Review by Mark Harden The exhibition "Johannes Vermeer", on display at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. November 12, 1995 through February 11, 1996 before moving to The Hague's Royal Cabinet of Paintings Mauritshuis, was the first ever exclusively dedicated to the paintings of the celebrated seventeenth-century master of Delft. This show brought together twenty-three of the thirty-six works attributed to Vermeer, presenting a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience a thorough survey of his stunning work. Vermeer chose as his motifs moments from ordinary life. He often portrayed individuals transfixed in quiet contemplation or in the performance of some seemingly mundane task: pouring water or milk, reading or writing a letter, donning jewelry. Yet the images are rendered with such expressive virtuosity that these moments are transformed into aspects of eternal truth. The means by which Vermeer accomplished this transformation is one of the arcane mysteries of his art. The inviting realism of his paintings makes them accessible to nearly everyone. A closer examination of Vermeer's technique, however, reveals that he often altered reality in order to achieve a more powerful expression of his theme. The manipulation of light and shadow, in particular, served to intensify aspects of his composition.

Glazing in the Art of Johannes Vermeer
the mysterious old masters' painting
technique and how Vermeer used it
O f all the old masters' painting techniques, glazing is probably the most discussed but the least understood. Completely abandoned in the twentieth-century, it was once one of the most valuable tools possessed by painters. In recent years glazing has been called upon by many art historians and painters alike to explain every nuance in many a masterpiece, assuming an almost mystical character. In order to better comprehend glazing's technical complexities and true purposes, both the technique itself and how Vermeer utilized it in his own masterpieces, will be examine
Glazing a Red Satin Dress
step one
Vermeer first painted the so called underpainting , modeling forms and creating light effects with shades of opaque vermilion and flake white. Vermilion was the only strong red opaque pigment available, it had an orange over tone. A small amount of bone black was added in the darker shadows. This layer was allowed to dry completely
step two
Over the underpainting Vermeer applied one or two very thin layers of madder lake, a deep ruby red, which is tranparent by nature.

The waste wrap of The Milkmaid , which is in a very good state of conservation, has to been seen directly to realize the radiant quality of pure lapis lazuli. Vermeer used genuine ultramarine not only to represent the blue objects within the paintings but even in the shadows of white porcelain and cloth. The background wall of Woman with a Water Pitcher contains genuine ultramarine. True lapis lazuli is almost impossible to find today and has been replaced very well by ultramarine blue.
While most of his contemporaries used the cheaper azurite Vermeer probably spared no cost in acquiring only the best quality lapis lazuli
LEAD -TIN YELLOW Lead-tin yellow is a very old pigment that can be dated back to as early as 1300 in Medieval Europe. All of the paintings that have been identified as containing lead-tin yellow date between approximately 1300 and 1750. One of the most important uses of lead-tin yellow pigment was in the color glass production in Venice and Bologna in the Middle Ages It was the brightest yellow in Vermeer's age which has a very distinct lemon tone and is very opaque. Jan Vermeer was relatively unknown as an artist during his lifetime, and went undiscovered for nearly 200 years after his death. He also went by three different names, to add to his mystique. His work is now appreciated for its optical precision, a technique which was far ahead of its time.
