Vedder The Vedders are blessed to have a great deal of information available about their Mohawk Valley, NY roots. This branch of the family I have by far the most information on in regards to the sheer number of names going back into the late 1500s. Thats means however that this part of the site will take up the most time. Please be patient as I will try to get into the Vedders of Schenectady. My branch of the Vedders are the ones who went into St Augustine and although most of them are unknown we have probably the most famous Vedder of them all in the St Augustine branch: Elihu Vedder the world renown painter. The old Vedder House on 63 Orange Street in St Augustine FL Although he actually didnt live in St Augustine Elihu Vedders father Elihu Vedder Sr. did. Hes listed in the 1880 census as a dentist and in the 1885 census as a farmer. My 3rd great grandfather Dr. John J Vedder was a nephew of Elihu Sr. and a first cousin of Elihu the painter. John J came over with Elihu Sr into St Augustine around 1870 and they were apart of one of St Augustines great historical periods when many northerners, including Henry Flagler John D Rockefellers right hand man at Standard Oil, came down into the city. They played an important role in reviving the grand old city after a long period of decline following the end of Spanish rule. John J and Elihu were dentists who came over to try to capitalize on the growing population and tourism of the area. After a while John J apparently got bored with dentistry so he dropped it in favor of establishing a curiosity shop full of exotic animals. They were ditched for stuffed ones however when a neighbor complained about some of the animals escaping into their yard. Elihu also probably got bored so he left to practice dentistry in Cuba.

Erlebacher's gift is for matter-of-fact description, a quality that stands her in good stead as a painter of still lifes. But it is a hindrance to the kind of mythopoesis she strains after in narrative work. Her skills and sympathies are better suited to trompe l'oeil than to story-telling. She serves herself best with the still lifes on view here. The successful figures in this exhibition are those in which a single model is set anonymously on a draped platform, back to the viewer, then lit and handled like any other nature morte . American Collection Elihu Vedder visited Egypt long before he created this painting in 1891. He made sketches of rounded tombs similar to the ones he painted here. He also described in his diary the activities of merchants, who slowly moved their goods across the desert on camel. The stone forms in the right foreground are stepping platforms used to mount the camels. The broad foreground, almost empty of forms, suggests the vast and desolate expanses Vedder felt in the desert. The camels are silhouetted against the low background hills, a device that calls attention to an exotic animal all but unknown to nineteenth-century Americans. By hiding the tombs, on the left, among the rocky outcroppings, Vedder suggests the mystery of death that had long fascinated him. This hidden realm of the past boldly challenges the present day, represented here by the brilliant blue sky and the mundane activities of the small figures.

(41 x 53 cm) Membership Purchase Fund. 70.92 Elihu Vedder was born in New York City but spent most of his adult life in Italy. Although aware of the art of his time, he did not follow any particular trend, but instead created brooding, poetic images out of his own perceptions, dreams, and inventions. Best known for his famous painting The Questioner of the Sphinx , his style is marked by its simplicity of form and linear patterns created by clearly defined, rhythmic contours. The movements and gestures in his work have a timeless, ritual significance, and his compositions radiate a spiritual serenity undisturbed by everyday life. This painting, in its original frame, presents Vedder's preoccupation with the theme of the soul flanked by worldly knowledge on one side, a classical figure with the face of age and experience, and by Christian faith on the other, with a face of youth and compassion surrounded by a halo. Writing to his friend and patron Agnes Ethel Tracy in 1887, Vedder encouraged her to keep the "3 heads," stating "you will never get from me a more remarkable picture."
