Therefore, pastoral tourism of Antwerp in association with Antwerp Open, the coordinator of the Van Dyck Year 1999, organised a modest but worthwhile exhibition about the many connections of Anthony Van Dyck with the churches and convents of his native city. When we speak about Anthony Van Dyck we usually think of his marvellous creations as a portrait painter of the English court. But, also his short stays in his native city, Antwerp, were always an opportunity for commissions of portraits of many important people. Not so well known are his contribution as a painter of religious art here. So, the relation of Van Dyck with the different various monumental churches of Antwerp is in fact greater than is usually known. First of all, in the ecclesiastical archives, it is possible to find some important biographical facts about the Master: from his baptism until his last will and testament. Anthony van Dyck Sir Anthony van Dyck Pintor flamenco que fue uno de los retratistas más importantes y prolíficos del siglo XVII , y uno de los más brillantes en el manejo del color. Nació el 22 de marzo de 1599 en Amberes, hijo de un rico comerciante en sedas. A la edad de 11 años después de mostrar un talento artístico precoz, empezó a trabajar como aprendiz del pintor flamenco de temas históricos Hendrik van Balen. En 1618, sin haber cumplido los 19 años, fue admitido en el gremio de pintores de Amberes. Durante los dos años siguientes trabajó en el taller de Petrus Paulus Rubens en esa misma ciudad. En ese periodo sigue el estilo exuberante y dinámico de Rubens, que se manifiesta en El Prendimiento (1618?, Museo del Prado, Madrid). De 1620 a 1627 Van Dyck residió en Italia, donde fue un retratista muy solicitado y alcanzó su madurez artística. La fuerza de la pintura flamenca de su primera época se fue suavizando hasta dar paso a un estilo más elegante y solemne. En sus retratos de aristócratas italianos creó figuras idealizadas, con posturas enhiestas y orgullosas, físicos delgados y manos delicadas famosas por su expresividad. Influenciado por los grandes maestros venecianos Tiziano y Paolo Veronese utilizó colores brillantes y de gran riqueza. Ningún pintor de la época superó a Van Dyck en los blancos tornasolados de los satenes, los azules suaves de las sedas o el carmesí de los terciopelos. Fue la quintaesencia de los pintores de la aristocracia y alcanzó especial fama en Génova, donde demostró una gran capacidad para plasmar a sus personajes con un parecido notable y desarrolló todo un repertorio de tipos de retratos que posteriormente le serían de gran utilidad en la corte de Carlos I de Inglaterra.

By the age of nineteen, he had become a teacher in Antwerp. Soon afterward, he collaborated and trained with the famous Flemish painter Peter Paul Rubens. In his early twenties, Van Dyck went to Italy, where he studied the paintings of Titian and Paolo Veronese and worked as a successful portrait painter for the Italian nobility. He became so well known that King Charles I of England summoned him to London to be his exclusive court painter and eventually gave him a knighthood. Van Dyck's numerous portraits of Charles I and his family were greatly admired by his contemporaries. Realizing that Charles's political and financial fortunes were in decline, Van Dyck left England for Antwerp and Paris. A year later, after several unsuccessful projects abroad, he returned to London in ill health and died shortly thereafter. Van Dyck is buried in Saint Paul's Cathedral, a distinction reserved only for illustrious British subjects. In 1620 he was summoned to England by James I, whose portrait (now lost) he painted. The next year he went to Italy, where he studied the works of the great Venetians and painted a series of portraits of the Genoese nobility. These pictures, many of them still in the palaces of the Doria, Balbi, Durazzo, and Grimaldi families, show Van Dyck's extraordinary gift for aristocratic portraiture. Van Dyck conferred upon his sitters elegance, dignity, and refinement, qualities pleasing to royalty and aristocracy. An outstanding example is the portrait of Marchesa Elena Grimaldi (National Gall., Washington, D.C.). In 1627, Van Dyck returned to Antwerp, where he rivaled Rubens in popularity and painted a famous series of religious pictures. In 1632, Van Dyck was invited to England by Charles I. His most successful portraits of the monarch are in the Louvre and in Buckingham Palace. He was made court painter, was knighted, and was overwhelmed with commissions. Assistants were employed to enlarge his small black-and-white sketches and to paint the drapery from clothes lent by the sitter. With this preparation he was able to complete pictures very rapidly. From 1634 to 1635 he spent some time in Antwerp, where he painted his masterly
