SIR ANTHONY VAN DYCK
VAN DYCK, SIR ANTHONY It is unnecessary to dwell on a number of tales connected with Van Dycks early life, all of which have on closer examination proved to be apocryphal; but one story has been too frequently told to be altogether ignored. At the very outset of his Italian journey the inflammable youth was captivated by the beauty of a country girl, and for the love of her painted the altar-piece still to be seen in the church at Saventhem, near Brussels, in which he himself is supposed to be represented on a grey horse, given by Rubens to his pupil. It is now known, however, that the picture was commissioned by a gentleman living at Saventhem (to the charms of whose daughter Van Dyck in reality seems not to have been altogether insensible), and a closer study makes it almost certain that it was executed after, not before, his Italian journey. On. a reduced scale, and with the omission of two or three figures, the St Martin at Saventhem is a reproduction. of the picture at Windsor Castle. Traversing the Mont Cenis pass, Van Dyck stopped at Aix of this picture, in view of the Italian law of 1902, created considerable discussion in Italy and England. The companion female portrait was soon after also purchased.

Anthony van Dyck, portraitist, was born in Antwerp. A child prodigy, he signed his first portrait in 1616 and was quite well known when he became a member of Rubens' studio before he had reached the age of twenty. Van Dyck became Rubens ' favorite pupil and his most valued assistant. Van Dyck could soon imitate the master's style so well that it was impossible to distinguish the work of one from that of the other. In 1620, Van Dyck was invited to England for a short period to paint court portraits. He spent the next seven years in Genoa painting religious themes in a baroque style and studying the Italian masters, especially Titian and the Venetian School. In 1627 he returned to Antwerp where he continued with his religious paintings and completed a series of etchings - brilliant psychological portraits of contemporary poets and artists.
His portraits became more restrained and slightly less brilliant in color as he began to develop his own style. Van Dyck returned to England in 1632 and spent the rest of his life there as court painter to Charles I. During the last nine years of his life, he painted over 350 court portraits. These are executed in an entirely original style characterized by a warm palette, subdued by his use of cold grays and blacks and by skillful draughtsmanship, and combined in a manner that shows the influence of

Van Dyck or Vandyke, Sir Anthony [both: van d I k] Pronunciation Key Van Dyck or Vandyke, Sir Anthony , Flemish portrait and religious painter and etcher, b. Antwerp. In 1618 he was received as a master in the artists' guild, but even before this he produced independent paintings in his studio. For a few years he was the skilled assistant and close collaborator of Rubens . In 1620 he was summoned to England by James I, whose portrait (now lost) he painted. The next year he went to Italy, where he studied the works of the great Venetians and painted a series of portraits of the Genoese nobility. These pictures, many of them still in the palaces of the Doria, Balbi, Durazzo, and Grimaldi families, show Van Dyck's extraordinary gift for aristocratic portraiture. Van Dyck conferred upon his sitters elegance, dignity, and refinement, qualities pleasing to royalty and aristocracy. An outstanding example is the portrait of Marchesa Elena Grimaldi (National Gall., Washington, D.C.). In 1627, Van Dyck returned to Antwerp, where he rivaled Rubens in popularity and painted a famous series of religious pictures. In 1632, Van Dyck was invited to England by Charles I. His most successful portraits of the monarch are in the Louvre and in Buckingham Palace. He was made court painter, was knighted, and was overwhelmed with commissions. Assistants were employed to enlarge his small black-and-white sketches and to paint the drapery from clothes lent by the sitter. With this preparation he was able to complete pictures very rapidly. From 1634 to 1635 he spent some time in Antwerp, where he painted his masterly

    Sir Anthony van Dyck
Flemish painter, who was one of the most important and prolific portraitists of the 17th century and one of the most brilliant colorists in the history of art. Van Dyck was born on March 22, 1599, in Antwerp, son of a rich silk merchant, and his precocious artistic talent was already obvious at age 11, when he was apprenticed to the Flemish historical painter Hendrik van Balen. He was admitted to the Antwerp guild of painters in 1618, before his 19th birthday. He spent the next two years as a member of the workshop of the Flemish painter Peter Paul Rubens in Antwerp. Van Dyck's work during this period is in the lush, exuberant style of Rubens, and several paintings attributed to Rubens have since been ascribed to van Dyck. Back in Antwerp from 1627 to 1632, van Dyck worked as a portraitist and a painter of church pictures. In 1632 he settled in London as chief court painter to King Charles I, who knighted him shortly after his arrival. Van Dyck painted most of the English aristocracy of the time, and his style became lighter and more luminous, with thinner paint and more sparkling highlights in gold and silver. At the same time, his portraits occasionally showed a certain hastiness or superficiality as he hurried to satisfy his flood of commissions. In 1635 van Dyck painted his masterpiece, Charles I in Hunting Dress (Louvre, Paris), a standing figure emphasizing the haughty grace of the monarch.

O ne of Van Dyck's most important "history paintings", it was probably commissioned in 1620-21 by George Villiers, Ist Duke of Buckingham and favourite of James I. Although it ostensibly represents a classical subject it is thought to be an allegory of the difficult circumstances surrounding the marriage of Buckingham to Lady Katherine Manners, and the figures holding hands are likely to be portraits of the couple. Like his master Rubens, Van Dyck had a keen interest in antiquity, and he invokes the world of ancient Carthage with the inclusion of a Roman frieze copied from a piece known to have been in the Earl of Arundel's celebrated collection of antiquities.

Dyck, Sir Anthony van (1599-1641). Apart from Rubens , the greatest Flemish painter of the 17th century. In 1609 he began his apprenticeship with Hendrick van Balen in his native Antwerp and he was exceptionally precocious. Although he did not become a master in the painters' guild until 1618, there is evidence that he was working independently for some years before this, even though this was forbidden by guild regulations. Probably soon after graduating he entered Rubens's workshop. Strictly speaking he should not be called Rubens's pupil, as he was an accomplished painter when he went to work for him. Nevertheless the two years he spent with Rubens were decisive and Rubens's influence upon his painting is unmistakable, although ven Dyck's style was always less energetic. In 1620 van Dyck went to London, where he spent a few months in the service of James I (1566-1625), then in 1621 to Italy, where he travelled a great deal, and toned down the Flemish robustness of his early pictures to create the refined and elegant style which remained characteristic of his work for the rest of his life. Portrait of Rubens' first professional printmaker (see Descent from the Cross) by his younger proteg‚ in Antwerp. Van Dyck determined to use the fluid medium of etching to record the remarkable cluster of artists around him in Antwerp around 1630; the idea draws upon engraved precedents from the last third of the sixteenth century as well as tributes to artists by their colleagues (see Aegidius Sadeler's Portrait of the Artist Spranger and his Wife). Many of the van Dyck etchings were reworked in details by engravers prior to publishing; others, including a self-portrait, remained unfinished. This image is a notable fully-etched and realized character portrait, worthy of van Dyck's dignified painted likenesses.

    Anthony van Dyck in Toronto
    by Robert Fulford
The National Post , May 15, 2001) There's something odd about the newspaper reproductions that show Sir Anthony van Dyck's portrait of Henry Danvers, Earl of Danby, alongside articles about Treasures from the Hermitage Museum, Russia: Rubens and His Age, the superb new exhibition that recently opened at the Art Gallery of Ontario in Toronto. What you notice first in that picture is a black, crescent-shaped mark on the earl's left cheek. It looks like a printing error, but the gallery's catalogue shows the same crescent, and when finally you get to the exhibition itself (which should be a major attraction for Toronto and its tourists from now till Aug. 12), you discover it's on the surface of the painting where, curiously enough, van Dyck painted it, in the late 1630s. Why? It seems that the earl suffered a facial wound in battle. Wanting his scar celebrated rather than ignored, he wore a patch that drew attention to it and the patch, being part of his manly self-presentation, became part of the portrait that van Dyck painted when he was official artist at the court of King Charles I, that high-handed monarch who happened also to be the greatest royal art collector in British history. Though his name isn't in the title, van Dyck turns out to be the star of Rubens and His Age. Peter Paul Rubens himself looks fine in this Canadian selection, which has been organized by the Toronto curators with the help of their St. Petersburg colleagues rather than merely accepted (like the Barnes collection, for instance) as a touring exhibition. It's a rich survey of Flemish Baroque, and its many pleasures include one majestic painter entirely new to me, Frans Pourbus the Younger (1569-1622), whose portrait of Margaret of Savoy stops the show. But the 10 portraits by van Dyck catch him so often at the top of his form that they remind us how great he was and how far wrong art history goes when it takes him for granted as a mere court painter, creator of "swagger portraits."
