He soon acquired all the virtuosity of Rubens in rendering the texture and surface of things, whether it were silk or human flesh, but he differed widely from his master in temperament and mood. It seems that Van Dyck was not a healthy man, and in his paintings a languid and slightly melancholic mood often prevails. It may have been this quality that appealed to the austere noblemen of Genoa and to the cavaliers of Charles I's entourage. In 1632 he had become the Court Painter of Charles I, and his name was Anglicized into Sir Anthony Vandyke. It is to him that we owe an artistic record of this society with its defiantly aristocratic bearing and its cult of courtly refinement. His portrait of Charles I

After 4 months he returned to Flanders . He then went to Italy where he remained for 6 years studying the Italian masters and laying the foundations of his career as a successful portraitist. In 1627, he went back to Antwerp where for some years he painted a host of masterpieces. His reputation reached the ears of Charles I of England who recalled him. In 1632, Van Dyck again arrived in London . His success in England was rapid. He painted portraits of King Charles, Queen Henrietta, the king's mistress Margaret Lemon, the splendid group of the king's children, and of himself. In the latter part of his life he only gave finishing touches to the portraits which were for the most part painted by his pupils after his own designs. In July 1632, he was knighted, and in 1633 elected painter to the king. He received a considerable

Anthony Van Dyck (1599-1641) was born in Antwerp, Flanders to a prosperous fabric merchant and his second wife. He developed his skill as a painter at a very young age, and by nineteen he was admitted into the painter's guild of Antwerp as a master. Shortly after, he began working in the studio of Peter Paul Rubens, who by this time had great fame throughout Flanders and much of Europe. By 1620, Van Dyck had become senior assistant to Rubens.
Van Dyck was introduced to both etching and engraving by Rubens, who used printmaking extensively and trained engravers for his own use. He developed a strong reputation as a painter while working under Rubens, becoming well-known for his history, religious, and portrait paintings. Due in part to his great skill as a portraitist, he became an important court painter to King James I of England, who was a source of many painting commissions for Van Dyck.
Like most of the portraits in Van Dyck's Iconography, "Jacobus De Breuck" is an engraving rather than an etching (ninety-nine of them are engravings, and fifteen are etchings). Instead of the more quick, spontaneous method associated with etching, engravings are produced through an exacting process, which requires the skill of a trained engraver. In preparing the series, Van Dyck created meticulous drawings and oil sketches as guides and then sent them to a professional engraver to execute the actual plates, which were then printed and marketed by publishers. "Jacobus De Breuck" was engraved by Paulus Pontius, who was one of the most renowned engravers in Antwerp at this time, and who was also employed by Rubens. The deliberate and intensive process of engraving is mirrored in the precise, formal, and controlled quality of "Jacobus De Breuck."

Dyck, Sir Anthony van (1599-1641). Apart from Rubens , the greatest Flemish painter of the 17th century. In 1609 he began his apprenticeship with Hendrick van Balen in his native Antwerp and he was exceptionally precocious. Although he did not become a master in the painters' guild until 1618, there is evidence that he was working independently for some years before this, even though this was forbidden by guild regulations. Probably soon after graduating he entered Rubens's workshop. Strictly speaking he should not be called Rubens's pupil, as he was an accomplished painter when he went to work for him. Nevertheless the two years he spent with Rubens were decisive and Rubens's influence upon his painting is unmistakable, although ven Dyck's style was always less energetic. In 1620 van Dyck went to London, where he spent a few months in the service of James I (1566-1625), then in 1621 to Italy, where he travelled a great deal, and toned down the Flemish robustness of his early pictures to create the refined and elegant style which remained characteristic of his work for the rest of his life. His great series of Baroque portraits of the Genoese aristocracy established the `immortal' type of nobleman, with proud mien and slender figure. The years 1628-32 were spent mainly at Antwerp.

Overview
Anthony van Dyck, a true genius at portraiture, revealed the aspirations of his sitters. He often flatteringly elongated his subjects and portrayed them sharply from below to enhance their stature. With elaborate settings, symbolic accessories, and suggestions of movement, Van Dyck made his sitters seem at once grand and alive, inaugurating a style of formal portraiture that is still emulated today. Van Dyck's elegant likenesses were sought eagerly in the Low Countries as well as in Italy and England, where he was knighted. His mythological and religious scenes were also greatly admired and profoundly influenced later generations of artists. (continue)

Sir Anthony van Dyck
Anthony van Dyck (Antonis van Dijck) is one of the greatest Flemish painters. He was born on the 23rd of March, 1599 in Antwerp, 7th child in the family of a well-to-do silk merchant Frans van Dyck. After the early death of his mother he, at the age of 10, was sent to be trained by painter Hendrick van Balen in his workshop. In 1615, he already had his own workshop and an apprentice. In 1618, he was accepted as a full member of the Lucas Guild of painters. In 1618-1620, Van Dyck was working with Rubens as his pupil and assistant. He took part in the painting of the Jesuit Church in Antwerp. Also he painted such religious works as Samson and Delilah The Crowning with Thorns Judas' Kiss St. Martin Dividing His Cloak (1620-1621) and portraits: Frans Snyders Margareta de Vos Family Portrait (1621) and several known self-portraits . Although Van Dyck was with Rubens little more than two years, the older master's style affected his own indelibly. By his twenty-first year Van Dyck was already ripe for independence. His pride and ambition made it hard for him to stand in Rubens' shadow in Antwerp. He therefore accepted the invitation from

Apart from Rubens, Sir Anthony van Dyck was the most important Flemish painter of the 17th Century. After a brief apprenticeship with van Balen, he became a member of the Antwerp painter's guild and in 1618 came under the tutorship of Ruben's himself working as the great master's assistant. Ruben's influence was powerful. Van Dyck's work gained a fluency and grace which was conferred on every subject. Though van Dyck also painted religious scenes and landscapes and began a series of etchings of famous contemporaries, it is for his portrait painting that his immortality has been assured. Indeed he will be remembered as one of the geartest portrait painters ever. English portrait artists especially were enriched by van Dyck's incomparable skill for painting materials and the elegance and refinement conveyed upon his sitters. His influence in portrait painting can be traced through to Sargent (1856-1925).

Flemish
The seventh of twelve children born to a wealthy silk merchant in Belgium, Anthony van Dyck began to paint at an early age. By the age of nineteen, he had become a teacher in Antwerp. Soon afterward, he collaborated and trained with the famous Flemish painter Peter Paul Rubens In his early twenties, van Dyck went to Italy, where he studied the paintings of Titian and Paolo Veronese and worked as a successful portrait painter for the Italian nobility. He became so well known that King Charles I of England summoned him to London to be his exclusive court painter and eventually gave him a knighthood. Van Dyck's numerous portraits of Charles I and his family were greatly admired by his contemporaries. Realizing that Charles's political and financial fortunes were in decline, van Dyck left England for Antwerp and Paris. A year later, after several unsuccessful projects abroad, he returned to London in ill health and died shortly thereafter. Van Dyck is buried in Saint Paul's Cathedral , a distinction reserved only for illustrious British subjects.
