Hugo van der Goes Netherlands one of the greatest Flemish painters of the second half of the 15th century, whose strange, melancholy genius found expression in religious works of profound but often disturbing spirituality. Van der Goes's masterpiece, and his only securely documented work, is the large triptych usually known as the "Portinari Altarpiece" ( c . 1474-76; Uffizi Gallery, Florence) with a scene called "The Adoration of the Shepherds" on the centre panel . It was commissioned by Tommaso Portinari, agent for the Medici in Bruges, who is portrayed with his family on the wings. One of the greatest of the early examples of northern realism, it yet subordinates this quality to spiritual content, uses still-life detail with symbolic intent, and shows unprecedented psychological insight in portraiture, especially in the faces of the awe-struck shepherds and the Portinari children. It achieves an emotional intensity unprecedented in Flemish painting. Soon after its completion it was taken to Florence, where its rich colours and careful attention to detail impressed many Italian artists.

He had numerous commissions from the town of Ghent for work of a temporary nature such as processional banners, and in 1475 he became dean of the painters' guild. Goes, Hugo van der Goes, Hugo van der (d. 1482). The greatest Netherlandish painter of the second half of the 15th century. Nothing is known of his life before 1467, when he became a master in the painters' guild at Ghent. He had numerous commissions from the town of Ghent for work of a temporary nature such as processional banners, and in 1475 he became dean of the painters' guild. In the same year he entered a priory near Brussels as a lay-brother, but he continued to paint and also to travel. In 1481 he suffered a mental breakdown (he had a tendency to acute depression) and although he recovered, died the following year. An account of his illness by Gaspar Ofhuys, a monk at the priory, survives; Ofhuys was apparently jealous of Hugo and his description has been called by Erwin Panofsky `a masterpiece of clinical accuracy and sanctimonious malice'. No paintings by Hugo are signed and his only securely documented work is his masterpiece, a large triptych of the Nativity known as the

No. 945, 5822 < back next >> Hugo van der Goes combined two paintings widely differing in subject matter and style in this diptych. On the left is "The Fall of Man, painted within the tradition and style of Jan van Eyck, the founder of Early Netherlandish painting. In this representation of the temptation, leading to the Fall from grace presented within a vast landscape, Adam and Eve are tempted by the serpent in the form of a large lizard with a womans head. Minute, almost microscopic observation of trees and flowering plants as well as the exact depiction of light effects, such as the points of sunlight reflecting off individual leaves, fall entirely within the tradition established by van Eyck. The nude Adam and Eve likewise recall van Eycks studies from the nude for the Ghent altarpiece. In contrast to the very Eyckian "Fall of Man, the right half of the diptych, "The Lamentation, encapsulates the expressive tradition of Rogier van der Weyden. The emotional intensity of the moment controls all of the figures in the image. The passionate reaction of John the Evangelist and Mary responding to the dead Christ resonates in the animated patterns of broken, fluttering drapery folds.
