Goes, Hugo van der (b. ca. 1436, Bruxelles, d. 1482, Bruxelles) The greatest Netherlandish painter of the second half of the 15th century. Nothing is known of his life before 1467, when he became a master in the painters' guild at Ghent. He had numerous commissions from the town of Ghent for work of a temporary nature such as processional banners, and in 1475 he became dean of the painters' guild. In the same year he entered a priory near Brussels as a lay-brother, but he continued to paint and also to travel. In 1481 he suffered a mental breakdown (he had a tendency to acute depression) and although he recovered, died the following year. An account of his illness by Gaspar Ofhuys, a monk at the priory, survives; Ofhuys was apparently jealous of Hugo and his description has been called by Erwin Panofsky 'a masterpiece of clinical accuracy and sanctimonious malice'. Hugo van der Goes (c. 1435-1482) A painter of considerable celebrity at Ghent, was known to Vasari , as he is known to us, by a single picture in a Florentine monastery. At a period when the family of the Medici had not yet risen from the rank of a great mercantile firm to that of a reigning dynasty, it employed as an agent at the port of Bruges Tommaso Portinari, a lineal descendant, it was said, of Folco, the father of Dante's Beatrix. Tommaso, at that time patron of a chapel in the hospital of Santa Maria Nuova at Florence, ordered an altar-piece of Hugo van der Goes, and commanded him to illustrate the sacred theme of Quem genuit adoravit. In the centre of a vast triptych, comprising numerous figures of life size, Hugo represented the Virgin kneeling in adoration before the new-born Christ attended by Shepherds and Angels. On the wings he portrayed Tommaso and his two sons in prayer under the protection of Saint Anthony and St Matthew, and Tommaso's wife and two daughters supported by St Margaret and St Mary Magdalen. The triptych, which has suffered much from decay and restoring, was for over 400 years at Santa Maria Nuova, and is now in the Uffizi Gallery. Imposing because composed of figures of unusual size, the a]tar-piece is more remarkable for portrait character than for charms of ideal beauty. Royal Museums of Fine Arts, Brussels. The artistic heritage of Belgium was a key factor in any sense of a unified national past. A number of artists turned to the lives of past artists for their subjects. Emile Wauters (1846-1933) combined the Romantic interest in psychology and the role of insanity in artistic creativity in his haunting vision of The Madness of Hugo van der Goes (1872); Royal Museums of Fine Arts, Brussels). Hugo van der Goes (d. 1482) was a very gifted painter who retired from the world in 1475 and entered a monastery in search of a cure for his mental illness. He was stricken while returning from a trip to Rome, according to an account written by Gaspar de Ofhuys, the infirmarius of the Roode Clooster, a monastery near Brussels which sheltered van der Goes. The author of this report had been a young novitiate at the time of van der Goes' illness. He speculated that the illness may have been sent by Divine Providence, or may have stemmed from natural causes, such as "the malignity of corrupt humors that predominate in the human body." Ofhuys noted that van der Goes was "deeply troubled by the thought of how he could ever finish the works of art he wanted to paint," and also perhaps drank too much wine. Wauters' brother A.J. Wauters, was a noted art historian who had written a biography of Hugo van der Goes in 1864; he undoubtedly brought the chronicles of the artist's madness to the attention of his brother.
