Pre-Raphaelite Sculpture
Nature and Imagination in British Sculpture 1848–1914
Edited by Benedict Read and Joanna Barnes
290 x 240 mm
176 pages
Hardback
ISBN: 85331 609
An increased awareness of the existence of Pre-Raphaelite sculpture over the last decade has been largely due to the writings of Benedict Read. While much has been published on the paintings and poetry of the movement, the sculpture has been relatively neglected. Pre-Raphaelite Sculpture: Nature and imagination in British sculpture 1848–1914 sets out to redress the balance.
One of the original seven members of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood was the sculptor Thomas Woolner. He and his Pre-Raphaelite associates produced a spectacular body of work, which ranges from naturalistic portraits to Ideal works based upon literature and mythology. The latter is typified by the group of Paolo and Francesca by Alexander Munro, whose work is thoroughly surveyed here for the first time.
This book, published to accompany the first exhibition devoted entirely to Pre-Raphaelite sculpture, documents the emergence and development of this area of art. Nine detailed essays discuss the sculptors' lives and works and draw together a wealth of new and unpublished material. The influence of Burne-Jones on later sculptors of the calibre of George Frampton, Robert Anning Bell, William Reynolds-Stephens and Alfred Gilbert is also explored in a pioneering contribution by John Christian. The fully illustrated catalogue section covers many of the movement's key works and contains examples of works by Bernhard Smith, John Hancock and John Lucas Tupper, whose sculpture was hitherto virtually unknown.

43. William Holman Hunt
A PreRaphaelite Friendship The Correspondence of William Holman Huntand john lucas tupper, by James H. Coombs. Holman Hunt Images.
http://www.malba.host.sk/Pages/hunt.html
William Holman Hunt images and biography "In character Holman Hunt was completely different to Millais. Where Millais was affable and generous Holman Hunt was arrogant and unlikeable. His father was a warehouse manager in Cheapside, London, who ran an evangelical home where the young Holman Hunt spent considerable time reading the Bible. Holman Hunt left school early and went to work as a clerk at the age of 12. But office work bored him, he dreamed instead of being an artist, although he lacked the natural talent to be one. What he did have in abundance, however, were imagination and vision - rare qualities at a time when society was thrusting forward with post-Industrial Revolution fervor. "Eventually he persuaded his reluctant parents to allow him to attend the R.A. Schools where he could pursue his ambition to be a painter. There he was soon completely disillusioned by contemporary British art, in which he could find nothing to emulate or admire. However he read John Ruskin's second volume of Modern Painters and was hugely impressed by his argument that artists should return to the style of late medieval and early Renaissance painters, particularly Venetian, in their style of art. This appealed to the young Holman Hunt, who had spiritual leanings, especially the idea of bringing symbolic realism into modern art, so that the viewer could read with the help of metaphors more than the story apparently tells. "He met and became good, if unlikely, friends with Millais, another art student at the R.A. Both of them fostered the desire to get a painting into the 1848 R.A. Exhibition. Hunt in particular was anxious to get an acclaimed painting exhibited as he badly needed to sell paintings to make a living. They discussed ideas and techniques and painted in the studio together on their offerings for the exhibition. But while Hunt's painting was accepted, Millais's was not. Hunt had chosen a subject from a little known poem by a fairly obscure poet who had died in 1821: the poem was

[Originally appeared in The Pre-Raphaelite Review, The location of manuscripts cited below will be indicated in the text. I would like to thank the Henry E. Huntington Library and Art Gallery for permitting me to inspect and publish manuscripts in its possession, and I would also like to thank the artist's literary heirs, Miss Diana Holman-Hunt and Mrs. Elizabeth Burt Tompkin, for granting me permission to print these materials. William Holman Hunt's religious belief was as idiosyncratic as his religious painting. Although he shared many points of doctrine with the various Evangelical Jerusalem. Bishop Gobat in re Hanna Hadoub Since this pamphlet is not recorded in Fredeman's invaluable bibliographical guide to Pre-Raphaelitism and is apparently unknown to most scholars, it would seem to be worthwhile to describe it here briefly. The British Museum copy (4193.f.54) has the following title: Jerusalem. Bishop Gobat in Re Hanna Hadoub; with Original Documents Detailing the Case. The booklet, which does not bear the artist's name on the title page, was published in London by Joseph Masters, Aldersgate Street and New Bond Street and in Edinburgh by Seaton and Mackenzie. Hunt's name appears at the end of a nineteen page text of approximately 6,000 words, which is dated London, March, 1858, and to this the painter has added a forty-two page appendix running to almost 30,000 words of documents explaining the case. Since many of the letters included are by Hunt himself, this document is, of course, important for anyone interested in assembling a complete correspondence of the artist. In the following pages I shall identify quoted passages by page numbers referring to the British Museum copy. Hunt explains that he

Pre-Raphaelite, English Artist 1840-1905 http://www.rabbipic.com
"the only place in the world to buy a top-quality print of this unique painting" Often called "the only Jewish member of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood" recommend us Simeon Solomon
In 1848 a group of young English artists formed The pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, primarily to capitalise on the benefits of participating in a shared enterprise. Though the links between them were seen as interpersonal, rather than stylistic, they established a common 'brand' (signing all their paintings PRB) and came to challenge restrictive artistic conventions promoted by Sir Joshua Reynolds as pre-requisites for acceptability at the Royal Academy. This meant breaking away from formulaic approaches to the placement of figures to embody "sincerity in art through attention to detail and truth to nature". Most significantly, it also meant a return to the more colourful styles of the Renaissance, best exemplified by the work of extraordinary artist and architect Raphael Sanzio (1483 - 1520). Charles Dickens may not have approved, but the brotherhood inspired a progressive movement whose ethos drew promising young artist, Simeon Solomon, to become one of its leading lights.
