Louis Comfort Tiffany
Louis Comfort Tiffany February 18 January 17 ) was an American artist most famous for his Art Nouveau pieces in stained glass . He also painted, and designed jewellery and furniture Louis was born on February 18 1848, the son of Charles Lewis, who was the founder of a jewellery company. Louis' first artistic training was as a painter, studying under George Inness . At the age of 24 he became interested in glassmaking and in he founded his own glassmaking firm. He invented a process for making opalescent glass, which he promoted while most other artists believed clear stained glass to be superior. Both points of view were motivated by the ideals of the Arts and Crafts movement that had been founded by William Morris in England . One of Comfort's opponents in this argument was the rival glassmaker John La Farge ( In his company introduced a new technique, "Favrile", for making hand-blown vases and bowls. Much of his other work was in making glass picture windows, but his company designed a complete range of interior decorations. He used all his skill in the design of his own house, Laurelton Hall, in Oyster Bay, Long Island , completed in 1904.

Louis Comfort Tiffany was one of the greatest of the American artists making glass, pottery, jewelry, enamel on copper, and other salable works of art. He was born in New York City and studied art in New York and Paris. For a time he remained in Europe, painting oils and watercolors. Among his most outstanding paintings is Snake Charmer at Tangiers (1915?, Metropolitan Museum, New York City). Returning to New York he turned his attention to media other than paints. The Tiffany metal furnaces of Corona, NY, were started in 1898 and experiments in making pottery began the same year. Tiffany added shades to wide-mouthed ceramic vases purchased from Grueby and other leading art potteries. He continued to purchased ceramics even after Tiffany studios established its own ceramic division in 1905. That same year his firm began to make lamp bases for his Favrile glass shades . The bases were deep ivory-shaded brown. Later bases were green, and a few white or coated with bronze. Many had matte glazes. All were marked "LCT" on the bottom. The

Angel of the Resurrection - 1904
Dialogue by Mark:
A laser device, which by the way stands for "Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission Radiation"...a laser uses light to do some sort of work, like play your CD disk or help a doctor do a delicate operation. In today's Masters' Gallery we are treated to an artwork that also uses light...light shining right through the picture. It's a stained glass window built by Louis Tiffany in 1904.
Tiffany is the most famous stained glass artist of all times. When he was a young painter, he decided to decorate the windows in his studio. He wanted to use colored glass like he'd seen in the old cathedrals in Europe. But no one made glass like that any more. Tiffany researched how glass was made. he discovered that different minerals and impurities in the glass careated different colors. When the glass factories refused to make glass like this, Tiffany built furnaces and made his own.
Glass im made by melting minerals together with high heat. The melted glass can be shaped into vases or bottles, or poured out flat to make sheets. Once the glass is cooled, it can be cut into pieces.
It took hundred of pieces of stained glass to build Angel of the Resurrection. Some pieces are big, like the blue over the angel's head. Other pieces are very small, like the feathers in her wings. Some of the glass is painted, like the face and the lettering across the side windows. Every piece of glass is set into a metal framework to create the window.

By the mid-1890s, the issue between these two great artists had become one of seniority: which of them had first introduced opalescent glass in stained glass windows? The question has remained to this day, with every succeeding generation of books and articles on each artist claiming pride of invention. But historical research provides the answer, along with the reason for the question in the first place. Hubris, financial and social disaster, opportunism, and ultimately market share are in large part the explanation. Prior to 1882, relations between the two artists were not acrimonious. Writing many years later, La Farge related that Tiffany had visited him in the 1870s. La Farge had willingly shown him his experiments with opalescent glass and plating (the layering of one piece over another to achieve colors or effects), clearly establishing that it was he who introduced Tiffany to the material. If we accept La Farge's recollections that he and Tiffany were on apparently good terms at that time, friendly enough for La Farge to show the young artist his work, clearly something went wrong after that.

Louis Comfort Tiffany, one of the most creative and prolific designers of the late 19th century, declared that his life-long goal was "the pursuit of beauty." With its comprehensive assemblage of Tiffany's work, the Morse Museum's collection uniquely documents that quest. Although his father, Charles Lewis, had founded the most prestigious silver and jewelry company in America, Louis chose another professional direction. Originally trained as a painter, he began studying the chemistry and techniques of glassmaking when he was 24. He developed this interest as a partner in the firm of Louis C. Tiffany and Associated Artists, which in its four years of operation (1879-1883) provided innovative interior decoration for clients ranging from Mark Twain in Hartford, Connecticut to President Chester Arthur at the White House. Both schools thought that they alone were being "truthful," an ideal central to the philosophy of the Arts and Crafts movement. Equally important was the goal of design unity. First manifested in his efforts to create complete interiors, Tiffany's commitment to unity was extended to the design and manufacture of stained glass. The leading necessary to hold the pieces of glass together became a fully integrated design element, simulating, for example, the stems of plants. And Tiffany was convinced that the actual production of a stained-glass window required the artist's involvement at every stage, even in a factory setting-from creating the first sketches to overseeing how the glass was selected, cut and assembled.

CHAPEL, c. 1893
Louis Comfort Tiffany
Louis Comfort Tiffany's most impressive achievements were interiors - notably those of his own houses in New York City and on Long Island, the Havemeyer House in New York City and a little chapel he made for the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago. That chapel, not seen by the general public for more than a century, has been under conservation for two years and is now reassembled at the Morse Museum of American Art. Tiffany enjoyed international acclaim for his work starting with his 1893 chapel and continuing after the turn of the century. Then his reputation waned until the 1950s when it reemerged, but it has grown in recent years largely on the basis of individual objects. Tiffany's general popularity and a rising scholarly interest and opinion of his work made the prospect of rebuilding with original elements one of his greatest interiors, his chapel of 1893, not only exciting but important.

The Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art houses the most comprehensive collection of the works of Louis Comfort Tiffany found anywhere, a major collection of American art pottery and representative collections of late-19th and early-20th century American paintings, graphics and the decorative arts. Founded by Jeannette Genius McKean in 1942 and named for her industrialist grandfather, its collections were built over a half century by Mrs. McKean and her husband, Hugh F. McKean. In the late 1950s they acquired major windows and architectural elements from Tiffany's fire-ravaged estate on Long Island and later the elements of his 1893 chapel for the World's Columbian Exposition. The complete chapel has been reassembled and is on exhibit at the Morse Museum. Hugh McKean, author of
