The Geisha Has a Message
Photos by John J. Kim Edo Update: Japanese American artist Masami Teraoka poses before one of his paintings, "Tale of a Thousand Condoms/Mates," currently on view in a major exhibit of his work at the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco. Masami Teraoka's mix of classic Japanese style and contemporary themes BY JAMES CARROLL AND HUA HSU Masami Teraoka is talked out. After spending a good part of the day with reporters and other media types, he now welcomes several hundred opening-night reception-goers to an extensive exhibit of his work at the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco. "I am happy you have come to see my paintings," Teraoka says to the white-wine-sipping crowd that gathered in the museum's rotunda on Oct. 20. But anticipating more of the questions he has been fielding all day, he graciously suggests: "Perhaps we could just socialize a bit this evening." Such as it is with Teraoka's work. In this show, his 31 canvases beg commentary, especially for first-time viewers. In Teraoka's paintings, many of them nearly monumental at more than 8-feet tall, Kimono-clad women tear open condom packages with their teeth, pop icons are depicted in classic Japanese style, and samurais leer at snorkeling bathing beauties. The titles of Teraoka's works often say it all. "McDonalds Hamburgers Invading Japan" and "31 Flavors Invading Japan," for example, are nearly literal in their dramatization of fast food and consumerism in Japanese society. Other paintings focus on an array of social issues, including AIDS, censorship, pollution, and technology.

For Immediate Release:
Masami Teraoka "Tower of Babel" at Jay Grimm Gallery, Chelsea Jay Grimm Gallery at 505 West 28th Street, New York, will hold an exhibition of paintings by the internationally known artist Masami Teraoka from November 2nd through December 9th, 2000. There will be a reception at the gallery on Thursday, November 2nd, from 7-9 P.M., and the artist will be present. The exhibition is presented in conjunction with Pamela Auchincloss, 601 West 26th Street, 12th Floor, where a concurrent exhibition by the artist is on view through November 22nd. Born in Onomichi, Japan, Masami Teraoka moved to Los Angeles in 1961 to attend the Otis Art Institute. This move informed the culture shock of Teraoka's work in the late 1970s and 1980s, wherein geisha sometimes chase french fries under McDonald's golden arches or open condoms, painted in the style of Edo-period ukiyo-e woodblock prints. The importance of Teraoka's keen and pointed commentary about the cultural shifts and blatant denials that are shaping global society were quickly and widely recognized. The Santa Barbara Museum of Art mounted a solo show of his work in 1977, followed soon by shows at the Whitney Museum, Newport Harbor Art Museum and the Grey Art Gallery. Teraoka has exhibited internationally ever since and has been the subject of several monographs and essays.

Art in America
April, 2001 by Eleanor Heartney
Shifting from his earlier subversions of Japanese pictorial tradition, Masami Teraoka now draw on the conventions of late medieval European art for teeming, large-scale paintings about topical events such as the impeachment of Bill Clinton. It was in the early 1980s that Japanese-born Masami Teraoka first gained recognition for watercolors in which the realm of ukiyo-e prints clashed with images of the Westernized present. In these playful works, figures that might have stepped out of a woodblock print by 19th-century Japanese master Kunisada can be seen chomping down on McDonald's burgers, wielding video cameras and golf bags or carefully unwrapping packages of condoms. Initially, Teraoka came across as a gentle social critic who used the dissonance between style and content to underscore the absurdities and pitfalls of contemporary life. As the 1980s progressed, however, Teraoka's subject matter began to darken. Drawing on the tradition of Kabuki-inspired ghost prints, he repeatedly addressed the AIDS crisis, evoking the terrors of the disease with images of giant snakes and sinister toads. Even more strikingly, since 1992 Teraoka has largely eschewed Japanese references for nightmarish, European-tinged visions. Enormous mural-scale paintings plunge us into teeming infernos in which scantily clad women are assaulted by microphones, trussed and imprisoned in display cases and closely examined by tight-lipped clerics. Other figures wear carnivalesque masks with sword-like beaks, marking them as birds of prey. Symbols of death and damnation abound: skeletons peer from corners, garlands of skulls adorn captive maidens, red gashes of blood and flame lick over the painting surface.

select a topic local focus The Floating World: Masami Teraoka and His Art profiles one of the country's most renowned Asian American artists who adapts the art forms of East and West to comment on contemporary issues. Teraoka's work ranges from bemused to biting as it deals with wide-ranging themes, including cultural conflict, environmental pollution, sexuality and AIDS. He has been inspired by ancient Japanese traditions, especially the art of woodblock prints known as ukiyo-e , meaning "pictures of the floating world." In startling contrast, Teraoka's recent work has taken a darker cast as he draws on medieval Renaissance motifs to tackle issues of sexual repression and oppression, and the impact of computer technology. The documentary offers an intimate, revealing look at the artist and his creative process through interviews with Teraoka and experts in Japanese art and culture that place his work in artistic, social and historical perspective, including writer Donald Richie and artist/tatooist Don Ed Hardy. The film follows Teraoka to Japan to examine his roots as an artist and discover why he chose to leave his native land. Teraoka visits California sites that inspired his early work; plays jazz on the piano an early American obssession; shows masterworks from his ukiyo-e collection; paints at all hours in his studio on Oahu; joins snorkelers at Hanauma Bay a favorite subject; and charms his public at a San Francisco exhibition.

Star-Bulletin EVEN if the Los Angeles dry cleaner hadn't destroyed the heirloom black silk kimono his father gave him, and even if he hadn't misplaced the backup kimono, artist Masami Teraoka is saying goodbye to his usual choice of art opening attire. For the reception of "East is West in Hawaii" at the Academy of Arts last night, Teraoka chose Western garb, a reflection of his current state of mind. "I don't think I'm feeling very much Japanese any more," said the 65-year-old artist, who was born to a family of kimono store owners in Onomichi, a small town on the Inland Sea. Nevertheless, the academy is paying Teraoka homage with a special exhibit featuring the Japanese woodblock-like paintings that made him famous. The exhibit is part of the "East is West in Hawaii" show, which also features the work of 21 other Hawaii artists.
