Teraoka's work is known and respected, not just in his adopted home of Hawai'i, but throughout the world where he is recognized as an outstanding contemporary artist. He and partner Lynda Hess have recently donated a poster, designed exclusively for the affiliate, depicting Teraoka's 1982 water color painting "McDonalds's Hamburgers Invading Japan-Chochin-me". Proceeds from the posters will support ACLU's legal and education programs. Masami Teraoka was born in Onomichi, a small town between Hiroshima and Osaka on the Inland Sea in 1936. Art was always a focal point of his life and his first influences were the subtle colors and patterns seen in his family's kimono shop fabrics and his grandmother's collection of woodblock prints. He studied aesthetics at Kwansei Gakuin University in Kobe and, encouraged by his family, came to the United States in 1961 to attend the Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles from which he graduated with a BFA and an MFA in 1968.

Geisha and Ghost Cat 1989/2002 We are happy to announce the publication of a new etching by Masami Teraoka, his first print since the 1993 Hawaii Snorkel Series published by Tyler Graphics. Part of Teraoka's ongoing AIDS Series in the late eighties and early nineties, the original plate work was done at Smalltree Press in San Francisco in 1989. Masami worked with printers Brian Shure and Evelyn Lincoln for one month on the key plate, with plans to add red and blue plates, but the proofing was never finished. Tokugenji Press took over the project last summer and during several proofing sessions, sending the prints back and forth between Hawaii and Japan, the image soon expanded into six plates and seventeen colors. The release coincides with Teraoka's Works on Paper exhibition at Catharine Clark Gallery in San Francisco, California, February 28th to March 30th. The Floating World: Masami Teraoka and His Art Producer Louise Lo Genre/Year/Length Documentary, 2002, 60 minutes Description THE FLOATING WORLD: MASAMI TERAOKA AND HIS ART is a one-hour documentary that profiles one of the country's most renowned Asian American artists who adapts the art forms of East and West to comment on contemporary issues. Teraoka's work ranges from bemused to biting as it deals with wide-ranging themes, including cultural conflict, consumerism, environmental pollution, and AIDS. He has been inspired by ancient Japanese traditions, especially the art of woodblock prints known as ukiyo-e, meaning "pictures of the floating world." This was the world of geishas, courtesans, merchants, and kabuki actors that flourished in the pleasure quarters of Edo from the 17th to 19th centuries. In startling contrast, Teraoka's recent work has taken a darker cast as he draws on medieval Renaissance motifs to tackle issues of sexual repression and oppression, and the impact of computer technology.
