Other artists Stanley Spencer by Lara Grieve Following the success of William Blake, another important English visionary artist, Sir Stanley Spencer (1891-1959), will be given a major retrospective exhibition at Tate Britain. Blake's work influenced Spencer and both combine biblical themes with contemporary situations. Blake saw England (Albion) as the new Jerusalem, while Spencer peopled paintings of his native Berkshire village of Cookham with biblical figures. While at the Slade School of Art from 1908 to 1912, Spencer was nicknamed 'Cookham' by his contemporaries who included Paul Nash, Christopher Wynne Nevinson and David Bomberg. He cut an eccentric figure throughout his life. 5ft 2" in height, Spencer wheeled his artistic equipment around Cookham in a child's pram in later life, and sketched on long rolls of toilet paper during his commission for the World War II Shipbuilding on the Clyde series of paintings.

Everyday Miracles: The Art of Stanley Spencer opening on Saturday 25 October at City Gallery Wellington is the first substantial touring exhibition in New Zealand of the work of this much loved artist.
Described as a true visionary in twentieth century British art, Spencer is famous for his visions of the miraculous in the everyday. Comical, humane and visionary, his art was driven by his passionate religious conviction and turbulent personal life.
One of only two official British war artists whose work spanned two world wars, Stanley Spencer was not only enormously talented and respected, receiving a knighthood in 1959, but he was also wonderfully eccentric. He could often be found making studies for works at the shipyards on rolls of toilet paper or walking the lanes of his beloved village of Cookham pushing his easel and canvas in an old pram chassis.
Sex fascinated Stanley Spencer, as did angels, the transcendence of the spirit through faith, and life in the village of Cookham, where as a child he believed biblical events had taken place witnessed by local folk. Considered a maverick within the English art tradition, Spencer made paintings that are rich and complex, often with conflicting and controversial meanings.

Stanley Spencer: Artist of the Sacred
Earlier this year, the Tate British gallery in London mounted a magnificent exhibition of the work of the English painter, Stanley Spencer (1891-1959). A quick consideration of Spencer as an artist of the sacred will give some idea of the concerns of this site. It is easy enough to say that Spencer was an artist of the sacred. But what does that mean exactly? Consider one of Spencer's last works, The Crucifixion (1958). This depicts the crucifixion of Christ as taking place in a contemporary setting, in the High Street at Cookham, the Berkshire village where the artist was born and where he spent most of his life. Spencer had been producing comparable pictures throughout his career. A 1935 example is the St Francis and the Birds in which the saint is represented by the artist's aged father out in the village in his dressing gown and slippers. How are we to understand such works and the personality behind them? The Conventional Sacred
The conventional take on the sacred does not apply to Spencer. In this perspective, the sacred is about the supernatural manifesting itself in the natural world, but strictly in the context of ancient and exotic religions. This usage derives from Protestantism: basically, Protestants have used sacred when talking about other religions and holy when talking about their own.

To Stanley Spencer Cookham was a village in heaven. His early life in Cookham was the source of his inspiration and the village itself was an important background for many of his paintings. Spencer painted over 450 pictures and made hundreds of drawings, many of them set in and around Cookham. Often, his Cookham paintings were placed in scenes remembered from childhood, others were painted out-of-doors. Although Cookham has greatly altered since Spencer's early days it is still possible to see many of the settings of his paintings and the views he recorded so well.

At the Slade he won the Composition Prize with The Nativity (1912). On the outbreak of the First World War, Spencer joined the Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC). In May, 1918, Stanley Spencer was asked to contribute to the government planned Hall of Remembrance. The letter asked him to "to paint a picture under such title as A Religious Service at the Front, or any subjects in or about Salonika". However, it was not until after the Armistice that Spencer painting his most famous war painting, Travoys Arriving with Wounded at a Dressing Station at Smol, Macedonia, September 1916.

Stanley Spencer exhibition preview
STANLEY Spencer was one of the most enigmatic and eccentric British artists of the 20th century. And he spent most of his life working in the idyllic Berkshire village of Cookham, just a few miles down the road from Reading. A new retrospective exhibition is currently showing at Tate Britain, London, and O-Reading.co.uk's James Ratcliff went along to take a look. STANLEY Spencer was considered an oddity by a great many people. As a student, he was given the nickname "Cookham" because he refused to leave his village. Spencer preferred to travel to the Slade School of Art in London rather than leave home. Later in life, he was regarded as an artist with undoubted talent, but someone who lacked direction and a coherence of ideas. This exhibition sets out to show, though, how his work developed between 1912 and 1959 and had recurrent themes. The artist and writer Timothy Hyman, along with cultural historian Patrick Wright, have brought together a large selection of Spencer's work from public and private collections around the world. Arranged in chronological order, with sketches and studies accompanying finished works, this retrospective shows how Spencer's artistic style and choice of subject altered with the events in his life.
