Alfred Sisley BACK
Alfred Sisley was born in Paris on 30 October 1839 to parents of English descent.' The success of his father, a prosperous businessman, allowed Sisley to live comfortably as a young artist without relying upon sales of his paintings for income. Sisley was sent to London at age seventeen to train for a business career, but he preferred studying the paintings of John Constable and J. M. W. Turner in museums and art galleries. Soon after his return to Paris in 1860, he entered the studio of Charles Gleyre, where he met Monet and Renoir, and was encouraged by his master to paint out of doors and to express his individual style. Sisley first exhibited at the Salon in 1866, showing two landscapes painted near the Forest of Fontainebleau, and another painting was accepted by the Salon jury two years later. The few works that remain from the 1860s reveal Sisley's enduring artistic concerns, such as the rural landscape occasionally punctuated with figures, a road receding into a distant village, and the influence of Corot in both subject matter and style.' The acceptance of two of his paintings by the Salon in 1870 marked the final occasion on which Sisley exhibited there. After the Franco-Prussian War destroyed his father's business and caused the older gentleman's eventual death, Sisley was forced to depend upon sales of his canvases to support his family-.' From his home in Louveciennes, where he moved in 1872, the artist traveled to nearby Argenteuil, Bougival, and Port-Marly, as evidenced by his paintings from this time. Also during the early 1870s he met Paul Durand-Ruel, who featured works by Sisley in an 1872 exhibition in his London gallery.

Sisley, Alfred
Sisley, Alfred (b. Oct. 30, 1839, Paris, Fr.d. Jan. 29, 1899, Moret-sur-Loing), painter who was one of the creators of French Impressionism Sisley was born in Paris of English parents. After his schooldays, his father, a merchant trading with the southern states of America, sent him to London for a business career, but finding this unpalatable, Sisley returned to Paris in 1862 with the aim of becoming an artist. His family gave him every support, sending him to Gleyre's studio, where he met Renoir Monet and Bazille . He spent some time painting in Fontainebleau, at Chailly with Monet, Bazille and Renoir, and later at Marlotte with Renoir. His style at this time was deeply influenced by Courbet and Daubigny, and when he first exhibited at the Salon in 1867 it was as the pupuil of Corot By this time, however, he had started to frequent the Café Guerbois, and was becoming more deeply influenced by the notions which were creating Impressionism. During the Franco-Prussian war and the period of the Commune, he spent some time in London and was introduced to Durand-Ruel by Pissarro , becoming part of that dealer's stable. In the mean time, his father had lost all his money as a result of the war, and Sisley, with a family to support, was reduced to a state of penury, in which he was to stay until virtually the end of his life.

25,000 of the greatest lives
Born October 30, 1839, in Paris, France, to English parents. Of the artists who exhibited at the first Impressionist exhibition in 1874, it was Alfred Sisley who was the purest landscape painter. In an oeuvre of almost 900 oil paintings he produced less than a dozen still lifes and only one or two genre scenes. All of his remaining works are landscapes, and throughout his career he favored the same kind of environment whether in the forest of Fontainebleau, in Louveciennes, London, Moret, or Wales. His works tend to be calm with little attention paid to cityscapes or recent industrialization. They are often devoid of people, any figures or staffage in them being used as compositional devices or perhaps narrative elements rather than as a means of representing a humanized landscape.

    Draftsman, Painter
    French
Born in Paris of English parents, Alfred Sisley studied business in London from 1857 until 1861. There he saw and admired the paintings of John Constable and Joseph Mallord William Turner . Dissatisfied with his studies, Sisley returned to Paris intent upon becoming an artist. There he met Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Claude Monet . Frequenting the cafés with his new friends, Sisley absorbed the ideas that led to the Impressionist style. During the Franco-Prussian War and the Paris Commune in the early 1870s, Sisley fled to London. The war caused him a severe reversal of fortune: most of his paintings were either lost or destroyed, and his father lost his fortune. Reduced to extreme poverty, Sisley had to support himself and his family through modest sales of his work. Not one for self-promotion, he never gained the recognition he deserved. Back in Paris, Sisley exhibited at the Impressionist exhibitions in 1874, 1876, 1877, and 1882. A pure landscape painter unconcerned with the challenge of history painting, he celebrated the intimate qualities of the places he lived in, exploring the effects of changing light and weather and mapping scenes from a variety of viewpoints in different seasons.
