Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828-1882) Contemporary Review in 1871 as "fleshly"and this in the era of Bouguereau. Like his friend William Morris, he married the beautiful model for many of his paintingsin his case, Elizabeth Eleanor Siddal, who died of an overdose of laudanum in 1862 and was the posthumous model (from memory, that is) for Rossetti's painting of Beatrice, the beloved of Dante. In a romantic gesture, Rossetti threw the manuscript of his poems into the grave when his wife was burried, but later repented and had his friends dig it up again. main O nce upon a time, in 1849, two young students at the esteemed Royal Academy in London shared a studio. These two men were William Holman Hunt and John Everett Millais . They became inspired by the words of John Ruskin ['go to nature in all singleness of heart'], and the poetry of John Keats (Hunts first picture for the Royal academy exhibition being painting on the theme from Keats poem The Eve of St. Agnes ). Another young artist, Dante Gabriel Rossetti (who had dropped out of the Royal Academy school) admired Hunt's picture at the exhibition and soon became a great friend of Hunt. Hunt and Rossetti drew up a list of personalities whom they deemed their ' immortals ' [William Shakespeare and such. . .] and affixed it to their studio wall. Searching for a purer form of art, [that was free from corruption pride and disease' -Hunt] they decided to return to the artistic traditions that came before Raphael and the Post Renaissance (hence the name Pre-Raphaelite). They saw the academic art that flourished in the Academy as "sloshy" [this refers to artists paying no attention to nature, and painting merely with the rules and techniques learned in the academies. The perfect example of this was the common scene of a nude on a beach. Why is she there? What is the context and story of this painting?] and nicknamed the founder of the academy "Sir Sloshua Reynolds". And so, in their enthusiasm to reform British art and they knew it [they would also exhibit their pictures with the initials P.R.B], the three men formed the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and recruited four more members. Their father, Gabriele Rossetti, an exiled Italian patriot, was a scholar and poet and was obsessed with the work of the great Italian poet, Dante Alighieri (1265-1321), author of The Divine Comedy . The Rossetti family members were all devoted students of art and literature, including English authors, Italian authors, and English and continental painters. The Rossetti's childhood education was spotty: none read classical literature or studied contemporary European painting, although Gabriel Rossetti eventually attended King's College, and the Royal Academy in London. Sing-Song: A Nursery Rhyme Book Since Christina Rossetti never married, critics have tended to read her work autobiographically, identifying her dedication to study and contemplation as a source of sexual frustration that finds expression in her poetry as a fear of bodily pleasure. (Needless to say, the work of unmarried male authors is almost never read this way.) This reductive view is reinforced by her poetry's interest in exploring the conventional distinction between “earthly” (carnal) love and spiritual love. Until the early 1980's, in fact, literary critics tended to treat her work as an interesting oddity of Victorian poetry. The evolution of feminist and New Historicist criticism helped reclaim her work from obscurity and it is now treated with more respect by Victorian scholars.
