He attended the Kunstgewerbeschule in Hannover from 1908 to 1909 and from 1909 to 1914 studied at the Kunstakademie Dresden. After serving as a draftsman in the military in 1917, Schwitters experimented with Cubist and Expressionist styles. In 1918, he made his first collages and in 1919 invented the term “Merz,” which he was to apply to all his creative activities: poetry as well as collage and constructions. This year also marked the beginning of his friendships with Jean Arp and Raoul Hausmann. Schwitters’s earliest Merzbilder date from 1919, the year of his first exhibition at Der Sturm gallery, Berlin, and the first publication of his writings in the periodical Der Sturm . Schwitters showed at the Société Anonyme in New York in 1920. With Arp, he attended the Kongress der Konstructivisten in Weimar in 1922. There Schwitters met Theo van Doesburg, whose De Stijl principles influenced his work. Schwitters’s Dada activities included his Merz-Matineen and Merz-Abende at which he presented his poetry. From 1923 to 1932, he published the magazine

Kurt Schwitters Archives
Kurt Schwitters Œuvre List The Kurt Schwitters Archives in the Sprengel Museum Hannover were set up in 1994 and contain the most comprehensive documentation of the artistic work of Kurt Schwitters (1887 - 1948). The archives were put together by the artist's son, Ernst Schwitters, and are the source of the œuvre list being drawn up in the Sprengel Museum Hannover. The Sprengel Museum Hannover is always very pleased to receive information about privately or publicly owned work by Schwitters. Please contact the Sprengel Museum Hannover, Dr Karin Orchard or Dr Isabel Schulz, Kurt-Schwitters-Platz, 30169 Hannover, Germany, T +49 511 16 84 - 46 48 /1684 - 62 12, Fax +49 511 16 84 -50 93. All information will, of course, be handled with the utmost discretion. Kurt Schwitters was one of the outstanding artists of the 1920s. Including numerous works on permanent loan, the Sprengel Museum Hannover has more than 108 original works by Schwitters. The Schwitters Archives in the Stadtbibliothek (Municipal Library) contain numerous personal documents, his correspondence, and writing by and about Kurt Schwitters. So what could be more appropriate than to collect information and documents about the life and work of this internationally important modern artist in his native city, Hanover. In 1993 the artist's son, Ernst Schwitters, handed over the archives concerning his father's artistic œuvre to the Sprengel Museum Hannover, on condition that the museum continue to add to them and look after them. For some 40 years Ernst Schwitters, whose starting point was his father's voluminous legacy, with which he had been entrusted, worked on a photographic and written documentation of all the work known to him. The archives are in chronological order and currently list some 3,000 works.

He founded the influential Dada journal Merz 1923 and in the same year began his first of his Merzbauen Merz houses ), extensive constructions, some filling an entire building, of wood and scrap. Most were destroyed, though Merz 32 1924 has been preserved in the Museum of Modern Art, New York. He also devised poems that consisted of sounds without words. He moved to Norway 1937 and, following the German invasion, to England 1940, where he spent the rest of his life. He continued making his Merzbauen , the last being in a barn in Ambleside, in the Lake District (now preserved in the Hatton Gallery, Newcastle-on-Tyne).
