Edward S. Curtis Living Artist's Historical Works Contact Us Return to Previous Page Frederick Ferdinand Schafer was born in Braunschweig, Germany, on August 16, 1839. He immigrated to the United States in 1876, at the age of 37, where he created some 500 paintings of western American landscapes, and he died in Oakland, California, on July 18, 1927. He is well known within a community of collectors of and dealers in western art, mostly in California and the Pacific Northwest. Schafer's training in Germany is unknown. His work resembles that of the Dsseldorf School and contemporary newspaper writers sometimes suggested a connection. He had studios in San Francisco from 1880 through 1886 and in his homes in Alameda and Oakland from 1887 until his death. He apparently spent summers sketching in Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Utah, British Columbia, and Alaska and many of his paintings bear verso titles with locations in those states and provinces. Most Schafer landscapes are summer scenes, probably because the majestic scenes he frequently painted were difficult to visit in the winter. A member of the San Francisco Art Association for many years, he regularly exhibited his paintings at the Mechanics Institute exhibitions in that city.

GUESTBOOK (For back issues, please see our archives) ANNOUCEMENTS Walter Judson , fourth generation stained-glass artist and owner of Judson Studios in Highland Park, California passed away of a heart attack at the age of 61 on January 5, 2003. Judson Studios was established in 1897 by painter and teacher William Lees Judson and over the past 106 years has designed and created stained-glass windows for religious institutions and commercial buildings. A history of the concern written by Jane Apostol and published by the Historical Society of Southern California was issued a couple of years ago. The Studios will continue operation under the auspices of Judson’s children and grand children. It also maintains a changing art gallery of the work of Judson alternated with shows of contemporary painters. Mentor Huebner Jeff Saraceno , an art collector who many of us saw at auctions of California art, passed away on March 24, 2003. Saraceno worked for TRW in the space program, was an inveterate collector, and began to acquire California paintings through antique shops and art dealers such as De McCall and Ron Belkin in the mid 1970s. Boyhood friends with Ed Korb in Pennsylvania, when the latter retired, Saraceno got him interested in collecting and that led to Ed’s dealing in art. A survivor of 9 years of cancer, Saraceno died suddenly and unexpectedly of a heart attack. We will all miss him. He is survived by his widow and a daughter.

We also remember that the swell was quashed with the 1989 recession. However, the trend to open art galleries seems to be re-establishing itself in recent months, a sign that the economy is indeed turning around.
