Frederick Ferdinand Schafer
Autumn in the White Mts. #24 ; Oil on Canvas ; 24" x 16 1/4" ; Signed Lower Left ; $ 3,500 USD Frederick Ferdinand Schafer was born in Braunschweig, Germany, August 16,1839; he emigrated to the United States at the age of 37 and he died in Oakland, California, July 18, 1927. He was a western United States landscape artist who is well known within a community of dealers in western art and collectors of that genre, mostly in California and the Pacific Northwest. Schafer's training in Germany is unknown; his work resembles that of the Dusseldorf school and contemporary newspaper writers sometimes suggested a connection. He had studios in San Francisco from 1880 through 1886 and in his homes in Alameda and Oakland from 1887 until his death. He apparently spent summers sketching in Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Utah, British Columbia, and Alaska and many of his paintings bear verso titles with locations in those states and provinces. Most Schafer landscapes are summer scenes, probably because the territories depicted were difficult to visit in the winter. A member of the San Francisco Art Association for many years, he regularly exhibited his paintings at the Mechanics Institute exhibitions in that city. Schafer's overall style is that of the nineteenth-century American realist landscape tradition, taking maximum advantage of the dramatic western American landscape and with a strong element of naturalisma preference to capture the impression of an object such as a tree rather than to provide photographic detail of it. Many of Schafer's canvases have a dramatic appearance, arising from use of large areas of intense, saturated color and contrasting light, but stopping well short of the awesome and melodramatic (sometimes called "sublime") effects found in canvases of Thomas Cole, Albert Bierstadt, and Frederick Edwin Church.

Preface: Why a professor of engineering is maintaining an art history web site
At the time, I owned two paintings by Frederick Ferdinand Schafer, one of which was dated but unsigned, the second of which was signed but not dated. So I undertook to learn how to authenticate the first painting and date the second one. This project would provide a reason to use research libraries, archives, and the services of librarians, card catalogs, computerized catalogs, and related materials. It quickly became evident that the art historical record of Schafer's work was almost non-existent, and that a prerequisite to dating undated works would be a catalog of his currently known works. So I refocused the effort toward the compiling of a preliminary version of that catalog. A second circumstance arose during the collection of documentation about Schafer: In 1991 the World-Wide Web appeared on the scene with the promise of becoming a useful method of disseminating exactly the kind of information that I was collecting. A catalog of paintings supplemented with biographical information continually evolves as new information comes to light, and the opportunity to update a web site as needed seemed to provide a nearly perfect match. In addition, as an engineer I wanted to learn first-hand just what was involved in the development, set up, and management of this new technology, and what makes some web sites more effective than others, so I decided that a web site should be the primary method of dissemination of the evolving catalog. I began moving materials on-line in the summmer of 1995, and the first version of this web site came up that fall.

Frederick Ferdinand Schafer was born in Braunschweig, Germany, on August 16, 1839. In 1876, at the age of 37, he emigrated to the United States. While in the United States, he created some 500 paintings of western American landscapes, and he died in Oakland, California, on July 18, 1927. He is well known within a community of collectors of and dealers in western art, mostly in California and the Pacific Northwest. Schafer's training in Germany is unknown. Many of his paintings bear verso titles with locations in those states and provinces. Most Schafer landscapes are summer scenes, probably because the majestic scenes he frequently painted were difficult to visit in the winter. A member of the San Francisco Art Association for many years, he regularly exhibited his paintings at the Mechanics Institute exhibitions in that city.
