A painter of stupefying energy and force, he ran a workshop, listened to music as he painted, did the classical scholarship for cycles of paintings that required erudite references, conversed easily in six languages and discharged ambassadorial missions of great delicacy - his second wife, Helen Fourment, was delivered of his last child nine months after his death. One of my companions, the painter David Reed, said, meditatively, that most artists he knows strive to emulate Van Gogh : "Maybe we ought to try to be like Rubens instead." "Still, those who hold briefs for the artistic benignity of suffering might ponder the fact that Sargent's one salient episode of serious reversal - the outrage that his great portrait of Madame Pierre Gautreau (Madame X) aroused when exhibited in the Paris Salon of 1884 - had just the opposite effect on his career. The brilliant society portraits with which he will be eternally associated came after that, when he removed himself from France and set up as a sort of superficial

document.write(''); John Singer Sargent at the National Gallery of Art WebMuseum: John Singer Sargent John Singer Sargent One of the great painters of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, John Singer Sargent made his fortune and reputation as a portrait painter of beautiful women and influential men. Presidents Woodrow Wilson and Theodore Roosevelt, oil tycoon John D. Rockefeller, novelists Robert Louis Stevenson and Henry James, actress Ellen Terry and art patron Isabella Stewart Gardner all sat for him. But Sargent was much more than a portrait painter. He was also a prolific landscape and figure artist, producing more than 1,000 dazzling oils and watercolors. Now, Americans have a chance to see Sargent's breadth. Organized by the Tate Gallery, London, a new and unprecedented exhibition presents a full range of the artist's work. After three months in London, the show opens at the National Gallery of Art in Washington on February 21 for a stay until the end of May and then moves to the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, where it will be on view from June 23 through September 26. John Singer Sargent January 12 April 14 ) was a painter especially known for his fine portraits. He is usually considered an American artist, although he spent most of his life in Europe . Sargent was born in Florence Italy to USA parents. He studied in Italy and Germany , and then in Paris under Carolus Duran. His portraits are remarkable for subtly capturing the individuality and personality of the sitters; his most ardent admirers think he is equaled in this only by Velázquez . Sargent's Portrait of Madame X (Madame Pierre Gautreau), done in , is now considered one of his finest works, but it aroused so much negative reaction in Paris at the time that it prompted Sargent to move to London

oil painting, 1895 Although Sargent spent less than one year in the United States , some of his finest work is there, especially his decorations for the Boston Public Library . Sargent is usually not considered an impressionist , but he sometimes used impressionistic techniques to great effect, and his Claude Monet Painting at the Edge of a Wood is beautifully rendered in an impressionist style.

"This is the first volume in a complete-works catalog that will include oil paintings, watercolors and pastels by the 19th Century American expatriate. . . . It encompasses a number of his most famous paintings, reproducing them beautifully in color and providing a number of luscious closeups of his virtuoso brushwork. The superb introductory essay sets his work against artistic theories of the period, and detailed entries on the paintings provide even biographical accounts of the sitters. A book that amply justifies its sixteen years of laborand not only to specialists."Alan G. Artner, Chicago Tribune "It's the beautifully produced first volume of the catalogue raisonne, the projected complete record of the artist's work." Advocate "This splendid book will be an indispensable source for anyone seriously interested in this stylish painter. The documentation could not be better."

John Singer Sargent Carolus-Duran Madame X, James McNeill Whistler . The scandal had damaged Sargent's reputation as a portrait painter, so he turned to landscapes painted in the plein air impressionist manner, and figure oils such as the poignantly saccharine Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose (1885-86), one of the most striking studies of twilight ever painted. During a year long trip to the USA (Boston and New York) in 1887-88, he completed nearly forty society portrait commissions, and his fortunes completely revived in 1892 with his splendid and touching portrait of Lady Agnew of Lochnaw In my world, Sargent is among the greatest watercolor painters and perhaps the most underestimated painter of the 19th century. Technically there was nothing he could not do, that goes without saying. But he also explored through the characteristics of his brilliant technique a uniquely modern artistic vision concerned with time and subjective perception. In his mature paintings, Sargent continually demonstrates the constructive and sketchy nature of our visual experience through his ability to create cohesive and convincing visual images from quick, deft brushwork. Most stupefying of all is the consistently high standard of painting that appears across his few hundred surviving works.

An expatriate American, he showed remarkable technical precocity as a painter. After studying with Carolus-Duran, he achieved a great reputation for his portraits, employing a style that could be seen as derived from Velázquez by way of Manet . Moving in the circle of the Impressionists , he came to know most of them, and they reacted to his work in varying ways. Degas , as might have been expected, was brutally dismissive; Pissarro , in sending his son to see him in London, where Sargent spent the major part of his working life, described him as `an adroit performer'; but with Monet he had a close and mutually profitable relationship. In the 1880s he began to paint landscapes that were overtly Impressionist in technique and approach, despite a certain superficiality. At this time he visited Monet at Giverny on several occasions, painting two memorable portraits of him: Claude Monet Painting at the Edge of a Wood (c.1885; Tate Gallery, London) and Claude Monet in his Bateau-Atelier (1887; National Gallery of Art, Washington). Although Monet was later to deny that Sargent was an Impressionist, this was unjust, especially in relation to some of his works in the 1880s and 1890s. Indeed, Sargent's technique for painting large canvases out of doors, as evinced in

    John Singer Sargent
John Singer Sargent (1856-1925) was an American painter who became the most celebrated portraitist of his time (or any time since) with his glamorous style influenced by Velazquez and the impressionists.
Sargent was born in Florence, travelled widely during his childhood, and lived most of his adult life in Europe, yet considered himself an American; he once turned down a knighthood from King Edward VII because it would have meant giving up his American citizenship.
