RYDER, Albert Pinkham , artist, b. in New Bedford, Mass., 19 March, 1847. He studied art under William E. Marshall and at the Academy of design, where he began to exhibit in 1878. In 1877, 1882, and 1887 he went abroad, visiting London and Paris. and traveling in Holland, Italy, Spain, and Germany. His paintings are notable rather for color and effect than for form, and he might be classed as a representative of the impressionist school in this country. Among his works are "Wandering Cow," "Curfew Hour," "Pegasus," "Farm-Yard," "The Waste of Waters is their Field" "Little Maid of Arcady" " Temple of the Mind," and "Phantom Ship." ALBERT PINKHAM RYDER
When Albert Pinkham Ryder died at the age of seventy, ARTnews noted his passing with the observation, "Ryder was considered by the cognoscenti as one of the ablest and strongest of modern American painters." While to some degree the pastoral scenes of his early career reflected the traditions of both European and American painting, Ryder's art became increasingly original in both style and content as he matured. His subject matter grew to embrace literary, religious, and imaginative themes that he distilled in evocative paintings informed by a deeply personal vision. Ryder's radical simplification of form and space resonated with a younger generation of avant-garde artists, who acknowledged him as a prophet of modernism by including ten of his paintings in the Armory Show of 1913. Alice Boughton photographed Ryder in 1905 at the suggestion of artist Arthur B. Davies, who was later one of the Armory Show's organizers Alice Boughton (1865-1943)

Ryder began drawing when he was four years old . His education did not continue long because of poor eyesight He learned painting from local amateurs. But he was not satisfied with the results: "In my desire to be accurate I became lost in a maze of detail. Try as I would, my colors were not those of nature. My leaves were infinitely below the standard of a leaf, my finest strokes were coarse and crude." He lived the life of a recluse in a small studio. He was always happy to see friends but had no desire to meet anyone new. He wrote poetry and took long walks. He had no interest in material things, comfort or money. His studio contained empty cereal packages piled to the ceiling, a richly carved wedding chest, a Greek head standing on a board with a foot bath on one side and a box of hay on the other. Sometimes he worked for 48 hours without sleep or food (Siegfried and the Rhine Maidens).

Tiger, tiger, burning bright,
In the forest of the night,
What immortal hand or eye
Could frame thy fearful symmetry? In what distant deeps or skies
Burnt the fire of thine eyes?
On what wings dare he aspire?
What the hand dare seize the fire? And what shoulder, and what art,
Could twist the sinews of thy heart?
When thy heart began to beat, What dread hand forged thy dread feet? What the hammer? What the chain? In what furnace was thy brain? What the anvil? What dread grasp Dared its deadly terrors clasp? When the stars threw down their spears And watered heaven with their tears, Did He smile his work to see? Did He who made the lamb make thee? Tiger, tiger, burning bright, In the forest of the night, What immortal hand or eye Dare frame thy fearful symmetry? Albert Pinkham Ryder (American, 1847-1917) Biography Self-taught American artist. Rejected by the National Academy of Design at twenty, he trained with a minor artist, William Edgar Marshall, and was then admitted. Travelled in Europe in 1877, 1882, 1887 and 1896. A visionary painter, he chose subjects from Shakespeare, Byron, Poe and Wagner. He painted some 170 pictures, many of small dimensions, and is considered one of the pioneering figures in American art. Sadly, much of Ryder's work has not survived because the unstable and unconventional materials he frequently employed deteriorated. Albert Pinkham Ryder's earliest formal art training was with the noted portrait painter and engraver William Marshall, and between 1871 and 1875, he attended classes at the National Academy of Design. During the 1870s, Ryder moved
in an orbit that included John La Farge, J. Alden Weir, Robert Louis Stevenson, and Stanford White, nurturing his deep love of literature and art. In 1878 he was included in the list of founding members of the Society of American Artists, established in protest against the restrictive policies of the National Academy of Design, though in 1906 he was admitted as a member. After the turn of the century he gradually became more reclusive in his behavior, a condition that worsened until his death in 1917
Throughout his career, Ryder maintained an interest in subjects derived from literature, poetry, and legend, especially themes of redemption and salvation, and of women in distress. Women who are the undeserving victims of fate or circumstance are the subject of some of Ryder's most powerful works, notably in Lord Ullin's Daughter (n.d., National Museum of American Art), based on Thomas Campbell's poem of the same name, set in Scotland;
