Artist - Rousseau Rousseau, Henri (1844-1910) Portrait by Dornac Rousseau was a self-taught artist and is often called ‘Le Douanier’ because of his life-long job as a Parisian Customs Official. He began painting as a hobby but took early retirement to devote himself to art. His greatest wish was to paint in an academic style. But his fantastical, naïve and highly stylised images inspired admiration in avant-garde painters from Seurat to the Surrealists. Tiger in a Tropical Storm (Surprised!) Rousseau: did you know? In 1908 Picasso, half-ironically, gave a banquet in Rousseau’s honour – an accolade the artist himself believed he thoroughly deserved. Would you believe it that when I go out in the country and see all that sun, all that greenery and all those flowers, I sometimes say to myself: 'All that belongs to me, it does'." - Henri Rousseau Born in 1844 in Laval, France, Rousseau did not embark initially on an artistic career. Instead, after two stints in the military, he became a toll collector in Paris at the age of 28. This not only enabled him to support his wife and nine children but also gave him an opportunity to observe the world around him and to sketch. Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec Edgar Degas Paul Gauguin and Pablo Picasso. His own faith in his ability never wavered and he declared to Picasso, during a banquet that the Spanish master held in his honour in 1909, the year before Rousseau died, that they were the greatest painters of their time, 'you in the Egyptian style, I in the modern'. At this time Rousseau had also begun to establish a wider reputation and sell some works. Although Rousseau's jungle pictures are his most celebrated works, his repertoire included Parisian cityscapes, portraits, still lifes and figural paintings on allegorical and topical themes. His style, which did not change radically during his career, is not easily categorised under any major artistic movement.

He was, from the first, entirely self-taught, and his work remained consistently naive and imaginative.
