Mark Rothko No. 3, 1949, 85 1/4 inches by 64 1/2 inches, oil on canvas, The Museum of Modern Art, New York, Bequest of Mrs. Mark Rothko through the Mark Rothko Foundation, Inc., 1981 National Gallery of Art, May 3 to August 16, 1998 Whitney Museum of American Art, September 10 to November 29, 1998 "Silence is so accurate." -Mark Rothko By Carter B. Horsley These "classic" paintings, an example of which is shown above, are luxuriant and often luminous. The best are marvelous immersions into saturation and Rothko intended his large oil paintings to be seen up close so that the viewer can be enveloped by their colorful aura. Rothko is in the firmament of the New York School of Abstract Expressionists and it is now half a century since his mature, "signature" style evolved and his works hold up well. There is no denying the loveliness of many of them, although loveliness is not necessarily what Rothko pined for. Indeed, Rothko was a very ambitious artist who wanted to transcend mere painting and achieve the magic of poetry and music and he considered himself neither a colorist nor an abstract painter, both of which he most certainly was. In an interesting catalogue essay entitled "Rothko's Unknown Space, Jeffrey Weiss discusses the notion of landscape and architecture in the artist's work:

Lesson Plan: Feelings in Color
Mark Rothko (American, born Russia, 1903-1970). Orange and Yellow, 1956, oil on canvas, 91 x 71" Gift of Seymour H. Knox, 1956 INTRODUCTION This lesson is an exercise in looking and thinking, making comparisons and connections. It relates to elements in all categories of the comprehension strategies of the third-grade language arts program: relate ideas, organize information, synthesize ideas, evaluate ideas, and generate and apply ideas. The family project could relate to the science and math curricula by turning the students' survey results into graphs and charts, followed by an analysis of the compiled data. INFORMATION FOR THE TEACHER Although artists rarely want to be categorized, the label "abstract expressionism" aptly describes their work. The paintings are completely abstract, with no recognizable objects from the real world (another term for completely abstract is NON-OBJECTIVE), and the purpose of their art is to create expression and emotion.

Rothko, Mark (1903-1970), is best known for his abstract paintings in which soft-edged rectangles of color seem to float weightlessly against undefined backgrounds. A major figure in the abstract expressionism movement, Rothko used color to convey a range of emotions and what the artist described as a religious experience. Mark Rothko was born Marcus Rothkowitz on September 25, 1903, in Dvinsk, Russia. In 1913, he left Russia and settled in Portland, Oregon. Rothko attended Yale University, New Haven, on 1921 to 1923. That year, he left Yale without receiving a degree and moved to New York. In 1925, he studied under Max Weber at the Art Students League. He participated in his first group exhibition at the Opportunity Galleries, New York, in 1928. During the early 1930s, Rothko became a close friend of Milton Avery and Adolf Gottlieb . His first solo show took place at the Portland Art Museum in 1933. Rothko’s first solo exhibition in New York was held in 1933. In 1935, he was a founding member of the Ten, a group of artists interested in abstraction and Expressionism. He executed easel paintings for the WPA Federal Art Project from 1936 to 1937. By 1936, Rothko knew Barnett Newman. In the early 1940s, he worked closely with Gottlieb, developing a painting style with mythological content, simple flat shapes, and imagery inspired by primitive art.

Mark Rothko's work is sometimes compared with that of his teacher, Joseph Albers, although their paintings had little in common. Rothko's artwork was emotional, while Albers' was intellectual. As Rothko grew older his work darkened and his last paintings and large works on paper are simple and sombre, perhaps a metaphor for his decision to end his own life.
Mark Rothko was born Marcus Rothkowitz in Russia and immigrated to the United States in 1913 with his family. He adopted the name Rothko in 1940, and legally changed it in 1958.
Rothko’s abstract paintings was the result of years of examination of other artwork, including Greek vases with horizontal bands of figures, the spiritual qualities of Native American art and the European Surrealists.
Mark Rothko's preferred format in 1949 was an upright rectangular canvas or paper with two or three stacked rectangular forms varying in area but free of the picture edge. The coloured bands, which he felt must be sensuous or functional took on a wide range of hues to which Rothko added lightness or darkness, translucency or opacity, high or low saturation, smooth or brushy textures, and contrasts of colour area. Mark Rothko is noted for being only second to Jackson Pollock as the great abstract expressionist of the 1950s. Rothko was born in Russia in 1903. His family immigrated to the United States in 1913. At Yale University he was a liberal arts major. At the Art Students League in New York, Rothko studied various areas of art. In the 1930s, Rothko became a painter in the abstract expressionist group. He married his second wife in 1945 and had two children. Rothko committed suicide in 1970. Rothko's paintings are known for their spiritual quality which parallels the holy ideals of the beat writers of the 1950s. Allen Ginsberg, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Gary Snyder, and Jack Kerouac are beat writers whose poetry and prose contains elements of holiness. The abstraction in Rothko's paintings is like the imagery that the beat writers produced in their work. Rothko's abstractness is described as "express[ing] the human tensions which persist through time in present terms" (Cavaliere 1002). The beat writers were expressing tensions they were facing in their contemporary 1950s culture such as fear of the cold war and being seen as delinquents from a mainstream society. -Amy Nichols (Cerrito, Joahn.
