Mark Rothko Abstract expressionist and color field painter "the people who weep before my paintings are having the same religious experience I had when I painted them." -Mark Rothko Today Mark Rothko is known for his color field paintings, composed of bright bands of horizontal colors painted on enormous canvases. He had a good reputation and his career lasted five decades. Rothko contributed a new form of abstract painting to the art world. He claimed that in order for a painting to be good it must have a deeper meaning and that aesthetically it may be well painted, however, that does not necessarily mean that the painting is good. He said, "there is no such thing as a good painting about nothing." Marcus Rothkowitz was born in 1903 in what we today call Russia. In 1913, he and his family emigrated to the United States, and settled in Portland, Oregon. Rothko attended Yale University in 1921 because he excelled academically and was given a scholarship. While at Yale he studied art, music, literature, drama, and philosophy. However, his time at Yale was cut short after his scholarship was not granted to him during his second year. After struggling for a year he decided to drop out altogether and headed for New York. While in New York he took courses at the Art Students League where he learned about cubism, Cezanne, color harmonies, and the German expressionists. He began to experiment with automatic drawing and the unconscious mind. His technique became looser and produced lines which dominated the foreground of his paintings. By the early 1940'2, stylistically his works were influenced by surrealism. His canvases started to increase in size and his style was still going through changes. Rothko was very much influenced by Jung and the "spirit of Myth".

In the 1940's Rothko work became influenced by surelism, but went into the nonobjective style that he is best known for. This style is known as the color-field branch of abstract expressionism. This style of painting is when an artist takes large, hazily defined rectangles of color and paints them on the canvas. He used anywhere from bright happy colors to dark murky colors to convey his emotions and a sense of spirituality. Red, Orange, Tan and Purple One of his most important late works is the Rotko Chapel. In this chapel, in Houston, Texas, he painted somber, contemplative murals. Rothko Chapel

Orange County Museum of Art, Newport Beach , Orange County) This exhibition is small compared to the scope of Mark Rothko's work, but it contains many treasures. It traces his visual evolution from traditional, socially realistic oil paintings on canvas, to the abstract multiforms, also referred to as stacked rectangles. In the forty-some years he created, his painting took several paths. Yet it always had one commonality: Rothko sought to excavate, no matter what period we consider, the visually pure and absolute as he sought to describe some hidden aspect of modern life. Hence his quest, at the threshold of developing his signature imagery, to convey the spirit of human mythology. Two aspects of the show are particularly fascinatinghis earliest works, and the transformation of how he arrived at his now famous rectangles. In the '30s, Rothko focused on the city as a living being. He portrayed its vastness and isolating effects on those within it. Subway Scene conveys a claustrophobic crunch as frozen vertical characters are positioned in architectural settings. Early attraction to a vertical and horizontal spatial placement of form is evident.

    Mark Rothko
    Orange and Yellow - 1956
    Dialogue by Mark:
Mars is the rust-red planet. The dirt on the planet is so red that when we look at it from our far away Earth, the sunlight on the mountains and valleys of Mars makes it glow like an orange star in the sky. Gigantic dust storms sometimes blow over the Martian landscape, sweeping dirt and dust six miles into the sky and lasting for weeks.
Maybe Mark Rothko had Mars in mind when he painted the picture in today's Masters' Gallery. Rothko is known for paintings called "color fields." His works often have big solid square shapes with soft edges that blend in to one another. This Rothko painting is titled "Orange and Yellow" and was done in 1956.
Rothko was born in Russia, but moved to the United States with his family when he was 10 years old. He grew up in Portland, Oregon, and decided to become an artist when he was a college student. His paintings became more and more abstract through the years, until finally he chose not to show any recognizable objects at all in his pictures. "I favor the simple expression of the complex thought," he wrote in 1947. "I am for flat forms because they destroy illusion and reveal truth."
Rothko's strong simple paintings give a feeling of calm and stability. You can experiment with soft edges in the style of Rothko by painting with watercolors on wet paper. Paint areas of bright color on your damp paper, then let the different colors just barely touch each other. The wet paint will run together and blurr in the most amazing fashion!
