English painter and poet. He was a founding member of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood (PRB) in 1848. As well as romantic medieval scenes, he produced many idealized portraits of women, including the Beata Beatrix (1864). His verse includes The Blessed Damozel (1850). His sister was the poet Christina Rossetti He formed the PRB with the painters John Everett Millais and Holman Hunt but produced only two deliberately Pre-Raphaelite pictures, The Girlhood of Mary Virgin (1849) and Ecce Ancilla Domini (1850), both in the Tate Gallery, London. Afterwards he refused to exhibit, and developed a broader style and a personal subject matter, related to his poetry. He was a friend of the critic John Ruskin His Poems the fleshly school of poetry

    DANTE GABRIEL ROSSETTI
ROSSETTI, DANTE GABRIEL Found, Rossettis sole contribution of the sort which Mr Holman Hunt affected, was begun somewhere about this period; but this piece of pictorial moralizing (the analogue of the poets own Jenny ), vigorous and intensely pathetic as it is, was never really finished by its author, being, indeed, far remote from Rossettis inner self, which was rather over-scornful of didactic art, and thoroughly indisposed towards attempts to ameliorate anybodys condition by means of pictures. Nor did the stringency of naturalistic painting suit his mood or his experience. Nevertheless, what is his in the existing picture remains a masterpiece of poetry with exquisitely finished parts. (F. G. S.)] Mr W. M. Rossetti (in the Preface to the Collected Works, 1886) has given an interesting account of his brothers literary nurturing. Shakespeare, Walter Scott, Byron, the Bible were the earliest influences: then Shelley, Mrs Browning, the older English and Scottish ballads, and Dante. Afterwards he preferred Keats to Shelley. By 1847 he was deep in Robert Browning. Malorys Monte dArthur, about 1856, engrossed him; Victor Hugo and De Musset, among French poets, were his delight. In his last years he had an enthusiasm f or Chatterton. From childhoods days he had loved to compose, but The Germ (1850) contained Rossettis first published prose or verse. In it appeared The Blessed Damozel, the prose poem Hand and Soul, six sonnets and four lyrics. to the committee on secondary education, which subsidizes science and art classes in various schools and higher grade science schools at Dingwall, Tam and Stornoway.

    Dante Gabriel Rossetti
abriel Charles Dante Rossetti was born in London on May 12, 1828 to an English mother and Italian father. His mother, Frances Mary Lavinia Polidori was the sister of Byron's physician John Polidori, who had committed suicide at a young age. His father, Gabriele, was a literary scholar who was obsessed with the works of Dante and spoke mainly in Italian. Young Gabriel therefore spoke Italian as well as English from a very early age. When he was born, Gabriel already had an older sister Maria. His younger brother William and sister Christina were the next additions to the family. Early on, Rossetti demonstrated literary and artistic talent and aspirations. One family legend has it that in 1834 a local milkman was amazed as he watched six-year old Gabriel creating a drawing of a rocking horse. In 1841, Rossetti entered the Sass's Academy art school, a preparatory school for the art Academy. He soon grew tired of the grinding, repetitive exercises and often just stayed at home to paint what he desired. Gabriel entered the Royal Academy Antique school in 1846, but found it just as dull as Sass's. What's more, his growing interest in and talent for poetry sometimes left him indecisive over which path to followwas he mainly a poet or a painter? He had, by this time, translated several volumes of Italian poetry into English, corresponded with various poets and writers, and had started developing what would become some of his most famous poems.

    Rossetti, Dante Gabriel Body's Beauty
Genre Poem Keywords Acculturation Religion Sexuality Society ... Women's Health Summary Rossetti writes about Lilith, Adam's evil first wife according to Hebraic oral tradition. She is described as a beautiful temptress. Her beauty hides a deep evil that nearly snares Adam and dooms mankind. Commentary This poem reflects a popular attitude towards women in the mid-nineteenth century. Woman had evil secrets within her that must be ferreted out if mankind is not to fail. The beauty of women can be only a mask hiding sin beneath. It is no accident, then, that so many nineteenth-century sciences pursued the secrets of women, especially gynecology (professionalized in this period) and psychology. Victorian Art in Britain Dante Gabriel Rossetti
Dante Gabriel Rossetti 1828-1882 Rossetti was one of the founders of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, and was the soul and main intellectual force of the whole movement. He must have been a fascinating individual, who was the inspiration for the whole of the second generation of the movement, and was the artistic mentor of the young Burne-Jones and William Morris. I have felt for a considerable time that the biography on VAB of Rossetti is grossly inadequate, and this replacement represents an attempt to address its shortcomings. Biography of Rossetti Early Life Gabriel Charles Dante Rossetti was born at Charlotte Street, off Portland Place, London on May 12 th Rossetti senior worked long hours at Kings College, and supplemented his income by private tuition. Neither he, nor his wife socialised outside their home, lacking the necessary income and time. Most evenings there were two or three fellow Italian exiles in the house, and the talk was of art, literature, and primarily politics. Perhaps as a result of this Dante Gabriel Rossetti the adult, was, though enlightened and progressive, disinterested in the specifics of politics. Edward Burne-Jones was similar in his outlook.
