D.G. Rossetti "Jenny" Dante Gabriel Rossetti was born in the same year as Jules Verne, another Utopian novelist like friend William Morris . Like Lord Byron , they loved the medievalism of Walter Scott's writing, and the image of another 'more natural' era, like the world in which Dante Alighieri (1265-1321) populated. Before moving permanently to England, Rossetti's father worked as composer Rossini's librettist. In England he taught and worked as a Dante scholar, marrying the much younger Frances Polidori, niece of Dr. John Polidori (who later wrote The Vampyre ). He was Lord Byron's companion during his exile from England in 1816. The elder Rossetti was a Dante scholar who raised his children with a high-minded classical sense they all went on to become published writers, the most famous being Gabriel and his poet sister Christina Though of Italian descent, Rossetti was really more the Englishman and never even visited Italy in his lifetime. Yet later his paintings had a Mediterranean quality that made his illustrations of myths so rich the richly symbolic paintings really seemed to come from another period of time, back when Greece and Rome held supreme, before the pan-European cultural advancements of the Renaissance and the Protestant Reformation.

All his life Rossetti was torn between his twin loves of poetry and painting - to such an extent that he regarded the two disciplines as inseparable. Arguably, with his facility and interest in both disciplines, he did himself a disservice as he never dedicated himself to either pursuit sufficiently to become a true master. In his youth he spent hours in the British Museum Reading Room soaking up as much literature as he could, to the detriment of his painting. Because of this he never developed the facility and ability of technique that would have helped him to become one of the really great painters; however he did become widely-read in German, French, and Italian. "Rossetti took the inspiration for his drawings from stories by his favorite authors, notably Shakespeare, Coleridge, Poe, Goethe, and, in particular, his chief obsession, Dante, with whom he felt a close affinity. Indeed he frequently annotated his paintings usually on the frame - with poems and texts to explain and develop the pictorial narrative and often in particular explaining the elaborate symbolism. For example, for his first real P.R.B. painting

A Sonnet
A Sonnet is a moment's monument,
Memorial from the Soul's eternity
To one dead deathless hour. Look that it be,
Whether for lustral rite or dire portent,
Of its own arduous fulness reverent:
Carve it in ivory or in ebony,
As Day or Night may rule; and let Time see
Its flowering crest impearled and orient.
A Sonnet is a coin: its face reveals
The soul, its converse, to what Power 'tis due:
Whether for tribute to the august appeals
Of Life, or dower in Love's high retinue,
It serve, or, 'mid the dark wharf's cavernous breath,
In Charon's palm it pay the toll to Death.
The Kiss
What smouldering senses in death's sick delay
Or seizure of malign vicissitude
Can rob this body of honour, or denude

Dante Gabriel Rossetti
Gabriel Charles Rossetti, named after the Italian poet Dante Alghieri, was the son of an Italian patriot and his wife living in London. He adopted the name Dante in response to his father's admiration for the great Italian poet, and later in life made the story of Dante and his beloved Beatrice part of his personal and artistic mythology. In 1848 Rossetti founded, along with the other artists Ford Madox Brown, John Everett Millais, and William Holman Hunt, the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, which sought to return art to the purity of the style preceding Raphael and the neoclassical movement. Although he wrote from the same period, he was at first better known as a painter than a poet. In 1850 Rossetti fell in love with his model Elizabeth Siddal (most famous as Ophelia in Millais' painting of that name), herself an aspiring poet and artist, whom he first lived with and then married in 1860. After a period of invalidism and a still-born child, she died of an overdose of laudanum, perhaps deliberate. In the late 1860s, Rossetti fell commenced a long affair with Jane Morris, the wife of his friend William; she served as model for many of his poems from this period on. Although his poetry found greater favour in the 1870s, he was attacked along with his friend Swinburne by Robert Buchanan as a proponent of "The Fleshly School of Poetry." Rossetti was a major influence on later Victorians of aesthetic and decadent leanings, including Wilde and Pater.

    Dante Gabriel Rossetti
Dante Gabriel Rossetti May 12 April 10 ) was an English poet painter and translator The son of an émigré Italian scholar, Rossetti was born in London England . He was the brother of Christina Rossetti and a founder of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood with John Everett Millais and William Holman Hunt At a very early age, he showed a strong interest in literature. Like all his siblings, he aspired to be a poet. However, he also wished to be a painter, having shown a great interest in Medieval Italian art. He studied under Ford Madox Brown , with whom he was to retain a close relationship throughout his life. Following the exhibition of Holman Hunt's painting The Eve of St. Agnes , Rossetti sought out Hunt's friendship. The painting illustrated a poem by the then still little-known John Keats . Rossetti's own poem "The Blessed Damozel" was an imitation of Keats, so he believed that Hunt might share his artistic and literary ideals. Together they developed the philosophy of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. Rossetti was always more interested in the Medieval than in the modern side of the movement. He was publishing translations of Dante and other Medieval Italian poets, his art also sought to adopt the stylistic characteristics of the their contemporaries.

English poet and painter who was a leading member of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood devoted to reviving English art through medieval inspiration . He was strongly attracted to the dramatic and the supernatural, both of which are represented in his work. Among his earliest paintings was a scene of the annunciation, Ecce Ancilla Domini (The Annunciation, 1850, Tate Gallery, London ). His art subsequently developed through other phases, in which the sense of human beauty, intensity of abstract expression, and richness of color were leading elements. Rossetti encouraged fellow Pre-Raphaelites William Morris and Edward Burne-Jones after they left Oxford, improving their technique and unleashing their creativity. Sorrow and depression, relieved only by his creative outlets, marred Rossetti's later years. In 1860 he had married a milliner, Elizabeth Eleanor Siddal, whose beauty he immortalized in many of his best-known paintings, such as "Mary Magdalene" at the "House of Simon the Pharisee" (1858, Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge). Within two years Elizabeth died, and Rossetti was grief stricken by the tragedy. In addition, he was troubled by a bitter attack that had been made on the morality of his poems in an article entitled "The Fleshy School of Poetry," published in The Contemporary Review in October 1871. Rossetti's rebuttal was published as "The Stealthy School of Criticism" in the Athenaeum in December 1871.

Dante Gabriel Rossetti (British, 1828-1882) Biography Dante Gabriel Rossetti was undoubtedly the most inspired of the Pre-Raphaelites, with his personal vision of the medieval world of the Arthurian legends which he painted with an intensity never before seen in art, with the exception perhaps of the visionary paintings of William Blake.
Albumen print by Lewis Carroll, taken at Tudor House, 16 Cheyne Walk, Chelsea, October 1863.
From left to right: DG Rossetti, Christina Rossetti, Mrs Rossetti, William Rossetti The circumstances that surrounded the death of Elizabeth Siddal have never been fully explained, although it has been claimed that Rossetti drove her to her death. A red-haired beauty, she was first his model and then his mistress before she became his wife. She was then forced to play the role of an unattainable goddess while Rossetti associated with prostitutes in private. His love for Elizabeth was genuine enough, but it was rooted in a form of high romanticism which had little to do with everyday living. When he confessed to her that the intense love he felt for her would become even stronger if she were to die, she took him at his word. Trapped in an unreal world of romantic passion, she made her escape by taking an overdose of laudanum. She was only 31. Rossetti was prostrate with grief at the funeral. In a gesture worthy of the final scene in some grand opera, he placed a copy of all his unpublished poems in her coffin – only to have them retrieved some years later and sent to the printers for publication. Despite all his talk of everlasting love for Elizabeth, he later had a long-standing affair with Jane Morris, the wife of William Morris.

The poet, painter, and designer Dante Gabriel Rossetti , b. Gabriel Charles Dante Rossetti, May 12, 1828, d. Apr. 9, 1882, was a cofounder of the PRE-RAPHAELITES, a group of English painters and poets who hoped to bring to their art the richness and purity of the medieval period.
The son of the exiled Italian patriot and scholar Gabriele Rossetti and a brother of the poet Christina Rossetti, Dante showed literary talent early, winning acclaim for his poem The Blessed Damozel (1847) before he was 20 years old. As a student at the Royal Academy Antique School (1845-47), he met William Holman Hunt and John Millais, with whom he launched the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood in 1848.
Rossetti's first Pre-Raphaelite paintings in oils, based on religious themes and with elements of mystical symbolism, were The Girlhood of Mary Virgin (1849) and Ecce Ancilla Domini (1850), both in the Tate Gallery, London. Although he won support from John Ruskin, criticism of his paintings caused him to withdraw from public exhibitions and turn to watercolors, which could be sold privately. Subjects taken from Dante Alighieri's Vita Nuova (which Rossetti had translated into English) and Sir Thomas Malory's Morte Darthur inspired his art in the 1850s. His visions of Arthurian romance and medieval design also inspired his new friends of this time, William Morris and Edward Burne-Jones Romantic love was Rossetti's main theme in both poetry and painting. Elizabeth Siddal, whom he married in 1860, was the subject of many fine drawings, and his memory of her after she died (1862) is implicit in the
