21. Rodin, Auguste (1840-1917)
Brief biography of the sculptor with pictures of several works.

Rodin, Auguste
sculptor france 12 Nov 1840, Paris - 17 Nov 1917, Meudon
Grave location: Meudon: Musée Rodin (Garden )
Auguste Rodin entered the École Impériale de Dessin, a goverment school, at fourteen. Afterwards he was refused three times at the École des Beaux-Arts. In 1864 he met the seamstress 1864 and she became a companion for life and the mother of his only son. Rodin did decorative stonework for Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse and in 1875 travelled to Italy to study the work of Michelangelo. Back in France he exhibited "The Age of Bronze" at the Salon of 1877. This caused a scandal, because critics accused Rodin of using a casting of a live model to reach such a realistic effect.
He continued to shock the academic world with his revolutionary sculptures and made up his own rules. His "Monument to Balzac" was scorned at and this caused Rodin a lot of pain. Fortunately there were admirers as well and in 1900 he was a very famous and well respected artist, who received many commissions for portraits and public monuments.
Rodin was involved in several love affairs and he married Rose Beuret only seventeen days before his death. In 1919 the Hôtel Byron (Paris) was turned into a Rodin Museum. Another Rodin museum can be found at Meudon, where the artist was buried as well.

One of the best-known sculptures of all time, Auguste Rodin’s: The Thinker, The Kiss, The objective of the project is to bring the highest quality reissue of the most important Rodin bronzes to the market based on original plasters and/or molds of Auguste Rodin. This collection of Rodin plasters has been assembled over several years with the intention of creating a limited edition of bronzes of the highest quality. In fact, using the finest craftsman and techniques developed by Rodin’s fondeurs, bronze casts were created with the utmost attention to the details, size, and patinas which exist in casts supervised by the artist during his lifetime. With this purpose in mind, lifetime casts were examined, and the only plasters selected were those which maintained the details and quality of Rodin’s best works. http://www.icctrade.org/rodin/

I n the last years of his life, Auguste Rodin (1840-1917) was hailed as a magician and miracle worker, poet and philosopher, sublime genius, and master sculptor. By 1900, Rodin was already considered to be France's greatest living artist. No other modern artist has been so controversial, yet had such extravagant epithets and honors, nor (with the exception of Picasso) has had such international impact. In giving form to the suffering, malaise, and ennui of the late 19th century, as well as celebrating the human form, Rodin effectively liberated sculpture from the didactic, moralizing monuments of the past. To understand Rodin's accomplishments, it is necessary to place his career into the context of the Paris Sculpture Salon and the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, whose high-minded academic standards had dominated French art and patronage since the 17th century. With the hierarchy of artistic authority stemming from these government institutions, breaking from tradition was both daring and extremely risky for artists hoping to succeed in France. Rodin challenged the established styles and, in so doing, revolutionized sculpture. After graduating in 1857, Rodin began working as a decorative sculptor. Throughout much of the 1860s and 1870s, he assisted in the workshop of France's premier decorative sculptor Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse (1824-1887). Following the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71, Rodin moved to Brussels, where he worked continuously for more than five years. In 1875 Rodin went to Italy to study the sculpture of Michelangelo. The trip provided the encouragement that Rodin needed to reject the prevailing dogma of academic sculpture, and propelled him into the next phase of his career.

See also: Sculptors "It is true that Rodin's art makes overt reference to its own artificiality. When we say that his kind of realism was not seamless, we mean it: his sculptures often exposed the joint lines of the piece molds in which they were cast, as well as the "unfinished" marks of modeling and editing. Fragmentation and repetition functioned in the same way, as instances of the sculptor's processes made evident in his product. Rodin typically made "spare parts" - feet, hands, knees, and so on - and put together his figures from these. And once he made a figure, he would often remake it, by recasting multiple versions and variants. By showing these processes in the partial figures and modular recurrences of his exhibited work, he undercut his own virtuosity as a conjurer of stories in flesh and bone, and introduced an evident self-consciousness about the artificiality of art's means. "Broken parts and replicas were a daily part of a sculptor's working apparatus: every studio in Paris was littered with them. But where others would have completed a work in progress, Rodin said "enough": and where others would have considered a figure made, he made it again - not because he thought these steps would cancel meaning in his work, but because he was willing to see how such decisions might alter the range of meanings he could convey. The truly creative act was to see how such forms could function within - not just independently of, or in antagonism to - his attempts to accord new meaning to the themes he dealt with.

In February 1871, after his laborious early years, demonstrated in the Rodin Museum by the busts of his father (1860) and Father Eymard (1863), the mask of The Man with a Broken Nose which was rejected by the Salon in 1865, Mignon which is probably the portrait of his mistress Rose Beuret, and the impressive Young Woman in a Flowered Hat (circa 1865), a brilliant example of modelling in terracotta, Rodin left Paris for Brussels to join Carrier-Belleuse who had invited him to participate in the decoration of the Stock Exchange. Many sculptors worked on this project in which Rodin seems to have played only a secondary role. His main task, as in Paris, was to execute elegant groups which his employer signed and sold under his own name. But Carrier was soon on bad terms with his young assistant and dismissed him, probably in June.

To you father of this delicious composition of the cathedral where the right hands of a man and a woman join to form a bow ogival! I drink at your perspicacious soul, I drink to your great genius '!
