By the age of 45, Diego Rivera (1886-1957) had emerged as one of the world's most famous and controversial artists. Actively engaged in the great artistic and political revolutions of his time, Rivera moved, over the course of his career, from easel paintings addressed to art connoisseurs to monumental compositions designed to influence the widest audience possible. He aspired to create not merely public art, but truly populist art possessing the visual and rhetorical power to change the world. Yet tremendous intellectual sophistication lay beneath the facade of his populist imagery, achieved through an innovative fusion of European modernism with the indigenous traditions of Mexico's pre-Columbian past and the art of its native American peoples. Widely influential not only in Mexico but also in the United States, Rivera helped to define the terms of the Mexican-American cultural dialogue that continues to this day. Nearly 40 years after his death, however, Rivera remains an artist in serious need of reassessment. His fame rests on the art he created after 1921, when he returned home after 14 years in Europe to assume a dominant role in the emergent Mexican Renaissance. Over the next two decades, Rivera's ability to effectively communicate political theory through a visual language accessible to mass audiences attracted artists and journalists worldwide. He

Press Materials Emphasizing Rivera's distinctive approach to synthetic cubism, this exhibition will present approximately 20 works from 1913 to 1915, when the artist was in France and Spain. These extraordinary compositions of vivid colors and tactile surfaces demonstrate the artist's engagement with themes of identity and place during a time of profound social and political upheaval in both Europe and Mexico. The show explores the evocative links developed between objects, people, and places, often including specifically Mexican motifs or references to the cities Rivera inhabited at the time (Paris, Madrid, Mallorca, and Toledo). Together, these paintings not only represent the artist's finest cubist work, but they also offer meditations on self-identity and nationalism. The exhibition celebrates an important 1915 painting, No. 9, Nature morte espagnole,

Introduction
Why should we study Diego Rivera? After all he was controversial as well as a multi-faceted individual. Why should we teach our students about this artist? The answer is simply that Rivera was one of the most influential artists of the twentieth century. He was a legend in his own time. The effect of his art can be compared to that of Michelangelo. We can learn about history and ourselves through the murals created by Diego Rivera whose dream was to be the artist of the Americas. In this curriculum unit students will learn about the artist Diego Rivera, the Mexican mural movement, New Deal Programs , and finally, murals in New Haven, Connecticut. The students will learn how mural art can teach a wide audience. The students will demonstrate what they have learned by creating a mural in their school. This will be an interdisciplinary unit that will be taught by the fourth grade teacher, the art teacher and the media specialist. Computer and research skills will be developed and the reading of biographies will be used as a research tool. The length of the unit will be one month. Several field trips will be planned in order to view some local murals in neighborhood schools.
Diego Rivera
In 1902 Diego Rivera was unhappy with the new art director at the San Carlos academy. Because of this he decided to leave the school where he had been a student for six years. Sixteen year old Diego ventured into the Mexican countryside to seek his artistic fortune. He painted houses, streets, churches, Indians, volcanoes, all of which was part of the unique beauty of Mexico. For a while he was happy painting the Mexican landscape. People began to acclaim him as an artist in his own right. But although he wanted to believe them , Diego was not content. He became restless and dissatisfied with his work. He felt that there was more to being a painter than he had so far mastered. He knew that in Europe there were great painters and the work of the old masters from whom he could learn. Rivera thought that perhaps he could raise money for his passage by selling his paintings but he knew he would still need money to support himself.

The reasons for that probably lie in the games of legitimacy that define the parameters of art history, and in the consistent focus by scholars, curators and critics towards Europe and European art in America. Yet the benign ignorance with which the contributions of Rivera and Siqueiros have met seems all the more puzzling when considering these two exhibitions. The Santa Barbara show, organized by the Museo National de Arte and curated by Olivier Debroise, focuses on Siqueiros' work of the 1930s. Many were produced while in residence in Los Angeles. Consisting of some eighty paintings, watercolors and woodcuts highlighted by Victima Proletaria (Proletarian Victim) [1936], and

Introduction
This supplemental unit to Diego was developed as part of the Schools of California Online Resources for Educators (SCORE) Project , funded by the California Technology Assistance Program (CTAP). The links here have been scrutinized for their grade and age appropriateness; however, contents of links on the World Wide Web change continuously. It is advisable that teachers review all links before introducing CyberGuides to students. This supplemental unit provides resources for students of Social Science and/or Spanish to develop an overview of the Mexican Revolution, understand and demonstrate the use of symbology in the mural paintings of Diego Rivera, and communicate the cultural significance of healers in the Mexican culture. During these activities, students will research and discuss a time line of major events, create and present a dialog between a soldier and a farmer regarding expectations for change at the conclusion of the war, select and describe the social and historical significance of a mural of Diego Rivera, develop a menu of symbols to create a mural that depicts an event or period of time in a student's life, view and interpret others' murals, write a letter to a healer convincing her/him to attend to a sick friend or relative, and respond as a healer to a written request for services. In their study of the life and mural paintings of Diego Rivera, students will increase their knowledge and understanding of Mexican history and culture as they focus on the following questions:
