JEFFREY KAYE: Vivid murals on walls throughout Los Angeles pay tribute to ordinary people of diverse cultures. The displays are a legacy of Mexican muralists, particularly of Diego Rivera, a pioneer of mural art. Rivera's work is the subject of a major retrospective presented by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Curator Lynn Zelevansky says the exhibit, "Art and Revolution," reflects Rivera's role as one of the century's great revolutionary artists, both politically and artistically.

Welcome to the Internet Mansion of Diego Rivera. Pictured above is the master himself at work. Diego Rivera was not only a fantastic muralist, but an incredible person with an extraordinary personality. Many wonder, looking at his large body and frog like features, what attracted Frida Kahlo (the famous Mexican painter, international beauty, icon, and current cult figure) to him. Once you have seen his paintings and read about his life, there is no question why women found him to be a remarkable man. When Diego was painting, he was constantly putting on a show. Crowds would gather as Diego would tell magnificent tales while creating a masterpiece that would live forever. His stories would leave people shocked, amazed, and needing to hear more. Mr. Rivera worked up to his death on November 25, 1957, and left behind a huge amount of fantastic works of art. On this website, I have provided some bizarre background information on this artistic genius that will surely take you by surprise. Much of this information comes from Diego's autobiography. Feel free to explore this site and meet the artist that is loved by millions for his talent and unique persona. Quotes From Frida Kahlo about Diego Rivera.
"Every moment he is my child, my newborn babe, every little while, every day, my own self." "The most interesting thing about the so-called lies of Diego is that, sooner or later, the ones involved in the imaginary tale get angry, not because of the lies, but because of the truth contained in the lies, which always comes forth." "Being the wife of Diego is the most marvelous thing in the world...I let him play matrimony with other women. Diego is not anybody's husband and never will be, but he is a great comrade." In a letter to a close friend Frida wrote, "You too know that all my eyes see, all I touch with myself, from any distance, is Diego.". This is quite some event because, to date, neither Diego Rivera nor Frida Kahlo have ever been shown in Switzerland and so far these two artists have never been exhibited together. T his will be the first exhibition of these artists in Switzerland. Quite an event it will be, as we said, for their works, considered a national treasure in Mexico, are those of a politically and artistically committed couple and it embodies all the ardour of the modern post-revolutionary age, illuminated by the Communist ideal, the return to national awareness and the struggle for Mexican and Amerindian culture.

The art of work: Diego Rivera
Some parting thoughts of Labor Day
By Porter Anderson CNN Career (CNN) "What we've learned of this man is that he was extraordinarily complex, brilliant," says Julia Bergman, Diego Rivera archivist with City College of San Francisco. "And in the 'Pan American Unity' mural, he painted a hymn to the working man." Labor Day arrived this year at a time when many workers are in trouble. Since January 1, more than 1 million layoffs have been reported in the United States alone. The International Labor Organization estimates that some 160 million workers are unemployed worldwide. Surveys now reveal that many who haven't been laid off in the past year are working in fear that they'll be next. Corporate restructuring has required many employees to take on additional duties and perform extensive multitasking to try to bear the load, often without a penny of additional compensation. The Stateside economic malaise has ravaged many laborers' 401(k) programs. But then, there's this remarkable Rivera work.

REBEL WITHOUT A PAUSE:
THE TEMPESTUOUS LIFE OF DIEGO RIVERA
In art as in life, Diego Rivera was a man constantly in rebellion. At 16, he left the prestigious San Carlos Academy in Mexico City in protest against the academy's emphasis on representational art. He became an avid Marxist but outraged the Stalinist regime in the Soviet Union by welcoming Trotsky to Mexico. Rivera shocked religious believers by including the phrase "God does not exist!" in one of his murals. In 1948 a group of students burst into the Del Prado hotel, where the mural hung, to carve out "does not exist!" Nothing daunted, Rivera led a shock troop of a hundred left-wing artists and intellectuals into the hotel. Amid shouts of "Death to imperialism!," the words were carved back in. (Link to Photo Strip)
Rivera was born in Guanajuato, capital of the similarly named state, on December 8, 1886. In 1892 his family moved to Mexico City. While at the San Carlos Academy, before his protest and departure, such paintings of his as Paisaje de Mixcoac ("Mixcoac Landscape") show the influence of José Velasco, Mexico's great landscape painter. Rivera had his first exhibition in 1907, which resulted in a scholarship that took him to Europe. After sojourns in Madrid and Paris, he went back to Mexico in the fall of 1910, In July of the following year he again left for Paris. There, between 1912 and 1917, he was affiliated with the cubist school, then considered the ultimate in avant-garde artistic expression.

The City of Guanajuato
Guanajuato is a city revered by Mexicans for its role in their long battle for political independence from Spain. Guanajuato is also important as the birthplace of Diego Rivera, a Mexican artist, who through his murals famous throughout the world for their aesthetic power as well as their socialist message brought to Mexicans of all colors a feeling of national pride and unity.
Templo de San Cayetano
The Cervantino . Indeed, Guanajuato is eminently civilized with narrow, tightly curving streets that demand a slow pace and an obliging attitude, punctuated by small secret plazas to coax the weary to continue the quest. We czme at night, hot, tired and rumpled to a city of subterranean tunnels, which twist and turn just like the rivers they replaced. It is a Venice without water, for the tunnels connect the different parts of Guanajuato and the existing walkways are often single-file alleys. Houses leap up the steep mountainside like so many colorful mountain goats tumbling over one another trying to reach the top. One of the many beautiful colonial silver cities of central Mexico, Guanajuato, drew such wealth from its mines that it was allowed to defy gravity, mostly, and rationality, absolutely. A university city as well as the state capital of Guanajuato, there is a constant bustle of grandmothers with toddlers, business-suited men of purpose, and students with book bags looking for romance.

38. Leon Trotsky
A short biography with pictures and artwork by diego rivera featuring Trotsky as subject.
http://www.fbuch.com/leon.htm
Keywords: Leon Trotsky Lenin the Bolshevik Leader Iskra Red Army ... Kahlo Lev Davidovich Bronstein ( Trotsky ) in 1897 Lev Davidovich Bronstein (Leon Trotsky) was born on October 26, 1879, son of a hard-working, thrifty, and well-to-do jewish farmer, in the southern part of Ukraine. The family valued education highly, and when Lev was about nine years old they let him move to the city of Odessa, to stay with his 'uncle' and to go to school. This is where Lev developed his nice manners and intellectual personality. Lev was an exeptionally bright and capable student, and in 1896 he moved to Nicolayev to complete his secondary education and to study matematics. This is where Lev turned revolutionary. In 1897 he was instrumental in founding the South Russia Workers Union and in 1898 the Russian Social Democratic Labour Party (RSDLP). However, Lev was arrested for his political activities, put in prison, and in 1900 deported to Siberia. In 1902 he adopted the name Trotsky as he escaped, and met Lenin in London. Trotsky then joined Lenin on the staff of Iskra (The Spark), the Communist newspaper. Trotsky and Lenin, as intellectuals, had much respect for each other, however, in 1903 at the Second Congress of the RSDLP, the Bolsheviks were led by Lenin, while Trotsky was among the Menshevik leaders.
