Romeo In 1918, the architect Gerrit Thomas Rietveld designed a chair that affected not only furniture design, but the history of architecture. Rietveld's "Red and Blue" chair is now in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art, and it is a chair I love. As art, it answers a big question in every person's life: how can we have both energy and repose at once? Eli Siegel, the great American poet, critic, and founder of the education, Aesthetic Realism, asks, in his Fifteen Questions of 1955: "Is Beauty the Making One of Opposites?" And, in his "Comment on the Relation of Life to the Fifteen Opposites," of 1964, he wrote: The opposites that as living beings we are most interested in, perhaps, are tranquillity and excitement, or repose and stir. Rietveld Schroder House Prins Hendriklaan 50 Utrecht The Netherlands Gerrit Thomas Rietveld 1924 Gerrit Rietveld belongs to the De Stijl movement. Other famous artists and architects involved were Piet Mondriaan and J.J.P. Oud. As part of the movement, primary colors such as red, blue, and yellow, are used predominantly. Gerrit Rietveld designed the Schroder house for Mrs. Truus Schröder-Schräder. After her husband passed away she required a smaller house for herself and three children. She lived in the house from its construction in 1924 to her death in 1985. The house has two levels. The lower floor consists of the kitchen/dining/living area, a reading room, a studio space which until 1933 Gerrit Rietveld used for his own office, the servant's bedroom, and a storage room. The upper floor was considered attic space according to the building code. All the sleeping areas were located up in that space and the bedrooms were divided only by portable partitions. The concept was used so that the children could have a bigger open space to play during the day and then close it up to have a more private bedroom at night. Mrs. Schroder provided criteria for the design of the rooms: 1. A bed should be able to fit in the room in at least 2 different positions. 2. Each room should have direct water supply and drainage. 3. Each room should have a door that gave access to the outside. Gerrit Rietveld was able to meet all the criteria and created a masterpiece by paying a lot of attention to details, including the paint color on the wall. It might seem like a mural canvas, but each area is painted a certain color for specific reasons. For example, on the door there is an area painted black because it is likely the area that is accessed the most and therefore most likely to be soiled.

Housing Block Erasmuslaan 9 Utrecht The Netherlands Gerrit Rietveld 1931 Before the construction of the highway, Mrs. Schroder (see Rietveld's Schroder House ) had a clear view of Erasmuslaan. She purchased plot of land for Gerrit Rietveld to develop a larger scale housing project. She thought that by having Rietveld design housing across from her house she would ensure a good view out of her windows. Unfortunately, she didn't have control of the construction of the highway. One building block consisted of a row of four houses. Erasmuslaan 9 was part of the first block that was built in 1930-1931. The next building block was built in 1935. These housing blocks were very different from the Schroder house, as the primary colors used on the latter were replaced with white plastered walls and steel window frames. Clad in glass and steel, the face of the building allows for the transmission of a lot of sunlight inside the units. The design of the housing block was inspired more by the functionalist architectural movement around the 1930s than the De Stijl movement evident with Schroder House. Erasmuslaan 9 was opened to the public as a model home as well as a showroom used to display Rietveld's furniture designs. The ground floor unit was made pretty open by once again utilizing portable partitions, similar to those of the Schroder House, to separate the rooms when required. Circulation stairs in the center of the building create an effect of the rooms/units spinning around the center of the building.

De hier in een historiserende stijl gemaakte massieve meubelstukken, met hun protserige uitsteeksels en sierrandjes verafschuwde de jonge Rietveld. Terugblikkend op deze tijd verklaarde hij het er alleen te hebben uitgehouden, omdat hij elke vrije minuut voor zichzelf kon tekenen. Daar stond echter tegenover dat toen zijn waardering voor het vakmanschap van de meubelmaker ontstond.
