PIERRE AUGUSTE RENOIR I once read that the French spend the first years of life making love, the middle years eating, and the third part mourning their youth. Pierre Auguste Renoir, the impressionist painter they say was the exception at least in his art. His canvases always celebrated the earthly pleasures. Octave Mirbeau wrote in 1913: "Renoir may be the only great painter who has never painted a sad picture." Of all the impressionists it was Renior who loved the nude, with a palpable glow. Renoir himself wrote, " The simplest objects are eternal. A nude woman getting out of her bed or the briny deep, whether she is called Venus or Nini, one can invent nothing better," This ability to mix the classical with the commonplace gave us some of the most beautiful picture of women ever painted. Renoir did his best work from the early 1860s to the mid 1880s. In 1883 he reached a mid life crisis, writing: " I went to the end of impressionism...I arrived at a point where I didn’t know how to paint or draw. In a word, I’d reached an impasse." Until his death in 1919, the work is of descending quality just the opposite pattern of Manet, Cezanne, and Monet, who peaked in their old age. Renoir was a contradictory figure in the world that produced the impressionist. Manet painted a Baudelairean vision of urban life, from drinkers to elegant, cold hearted courtesans. Monet painted the steaming bustle of the Gare St. Lazre and punctuated his landscapes with factory funnel. But Renoir, who detested the regularization and mechanization of modern life, eventually withdrew from the city to the country where his spirit fed on the utopian art past.
