FREDERIC REMINGTON'S "Coming Through the Rye" He entered Yale University as an art student and also played football under the great Walter Camp.
Remington made several trips to the Southwest in the 1880s, recording the vigorous life of the frontier in sketches which he began to sell to various publications, including Harper's Weekly and Outing.
Remington died unexpectedly of acute appendicitis in 1909 when he was only forty-eight years old and at the height of his artistic career.

The collection of the Frederic Remington Art Museum contains items pertaining to Theodore Roosevelt. From Roosevelt's time in Cuba, Frederic Remington created The Charge of the Rough Riders , depicting the man leading the Rough Riders up Kettle Hill during the Spanish American War. One of his beloved Rough Riders is captured in Remington's bronze sculpture, The Sergeant . In 1888, Remington created several black and white oil paintings for "Sheriff's Work on a Ranch," an article written by Roosevelt. Also included in the collection are more than 20 letters and invitations from Roosevelt to Frederic Remington.

Reviews
This engrossing book will change perceptions of Frederic Remington, an immensely popular American artist who has rarely been treated seriously by critics. Drawing on methods of art history, literary theory, psychoanalysis, and material culture studies, Nemerov shows that Remington's paintings are not mere illustrations of the frontier experience but are complex, imaginative inventions. "The most interesting and incisive study of Remington's art yet written. Frederic Remington represents a highly significant contribution to ongoing debates about Western art and more broadly the history of American art."Alan Wallach, Ralph H. Wark Professor of Art and Art History at the College of William and Mary [OK to edit] "I loved the book. It's provided more to think about Remingtonand more ways to think about his imagesthan the entire Remington bibliography combined."John R. Peters-Campbell, University of Colorado at Colorado Springs "This provocative and carefully crafted work seeks to understand the symbiotic relationship of Remington's art to turn-of-the-century American culture and how his art was informed, knowingly and unknowingly, by the intellectual, literary, artistic, and cultural discourses of that era. . . . An exceptionally significant work for understanding the art of an individual who thought he was documenting the transitory life of the old West."

Reviews Table of Contents In the decade preceding his untimely death, Frederic Remington (1861-1909) produced a series of paintings that took as their subject the color of night. This richly illustrated volume is the first to present all of these workssome seventy paintings that secured for Remington the critical acclaim he so coveted. Indeed, these magnificent nocturnes marked an important new direction for the celebrated illustrator, writer, and sculptor of America's vanishing frontier. In these deeply personal works, Remington explored the technical and aesthetic difficulties of painting darkness. Surprisingly, his images are filled with color and lightmoonlight, firelight, candlelight. Focused on the subject the artist had made his ownthe American Westthese paintings reflect Remington's dramatic reworking of the narrative tradition as well as the spare modernism of his late work. Frederic Remington: The Color of Night , accompanying the first exhibition devoted to the nocturnes, includes three insightful essays discussing Remington's nocturnes within the literary, historical, aesthetic, and technological context of his time. The nocturnes do much more than document a night that was rapidly disappearing under bright, newly installed electric lights. They also reveal how this son of a Civil War hero moved from burnishing Theodore Roosevelt's rough riding heroics in Cuba to exploring, like Stephen Crane and Ernest Hemingway, his own soul-searing war experience, and, like Joseph Conrad, to probing America's own heart of darkness.

Reviews Table of Contents The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, houses one of the most distinguished collections of works by Frederic Remington (1861-1909) in the country. Featuring Fight for the Water Hole , one of the icons of American art, and many other highlights, the Hogg Brothers Collection is remarkably comprehensive, representing an unparalleled survey of Remington's career. This handsome and generously illustrated book showcases the most important works from this collectionincluding paintings, works on paper, and a bronze sculptureestablishing each within its appropriate historical, cultural, and political contexts. Drawing on unpublished archival information, the book discusses Remington's spectacular rise to fame as a popular illustrator who mythologized the experience of westward expansion and whose works created the enduring American cowboy archetype, while chronicling the rapidly disappearing Native American cultures. Later paintings in the collection, such as The Call for Help and Episode of the Buffalo Gun , which display rich colors and a bravura brushstroke, are considered anew in the context of previous technical achievement, including works by the French Impressionists.

http://www.antiquetalk.com/column165.htm
James Chillman, former Director of the Houston Museum of Fine Arts, said of Frederic Remington, "Some people tell stories so well that their method of telling becomes identified with themselves." "I paint for boys," Remington said, "boys from ten to seventy. I knew the wild riders and the vacant lands were about to vanish forever...and the more I considered the subject, the bigger the forever loomed. Without knowing how to do it, I began to record some facts around me, and the more I looked the more the panorama unfolded." July, 1907, President Roosevelt said of Remington, "He is of course, one of the most typical artists we have ever had, and he has portrayed a most characteristic and yet vanished type of American life. The soldier, the cowboy and rancher, the Indian, the horses and the cattle of the plains, will live in his pictures and bronzes, I verily believe, for all time." Frederic Sackrider Remington was born in Canton, NY, October 1861, the son of a newspaper owner who established the successful St. Lawrence Plaindealer in 1856. Two months following his son's birth, Seth Pierre Remington would leave his family and business to help establish Swain's Cavalry, a regiment that won fame as the Fighting 11th New York . After four years of skirmishing in western campaigns, Seth returned home a distinguished lieutenant colonel and resumed his business. An indifferent student, Frederic's boyhood enthusiasm centered on caring for the local fire-wagon horse team, swimming, boxing, football, and his sketch-book of horses, soldiers, cowboys, wild Indians, and imagined battles. A Yale Art professor described him as "a queer looking student, frequently having his face and legs bandaged."

Frederic Remington's
Biography
Born: 1861, Canton, New York, USA
Died: 1909 Most people know of the names of the great Indian tribes, such as the Commanche, Sioux, Apache and many others, while chiefs such as Sitting Bull, Crazy Horse, Geronimo and Chief Joseph, have become equally famous universally. Artists in America during the 19th century depicted Indians in their paintings, concerned with describing their appearances, customs and ways of life. They also presented the best-known images of Western life. The most important painters of this time, Frederic Remington and Charles Marion Russell, were technically accurate and also sensational. They represented scenes of cowboys and Indians, gamblers, gunfighters, saloons and all the paraphernalia of the Hollywood Western. Webmaster document.write('Last modified' + document.lastModified)

This exhibition will be located in the Robineau Gallery on the main level from March 9 - May 19, 2002. Frederic Remington includes twenty-eight works by the artist, including both paintings and sculpture, all drawn from the peerless collection of the Frederic Remington Art Museum in Ogdensburg, New York. (left: Frederic Remington (American, 1861-1909) , Broncho Buster Born in the small town of Canton, in northern New York, Frederic Remington (1861-1909) maintained lifelong ties to the region along the St. Lawrence River. He began his career as an illustrator for such magazines as Harper's Weekly and quickly gained popular acclaim for his vivid depictions of life on the western frontier. An eastern audience fascinated with the West eagerly consumed Remington's dramatic scenes of cowboys, cavalrymen, and Indians. It was this type of art that gave rise to the romantic notion of the West as an area of danger, excitement, and dramatic confrontation. When Remington began sculpting in the 1890s, his mastery of the medium was soon regarded with critical approval:

Love of adventure and the great outdoors, especially in the West, were the bonds that sealed the friendship between Theodore Roosevelt and Frederic Remington. "I wish I were with you out among the sage brush, the great brittle cottonwoods, and the sharply-channeled barren buttes," Roosevelt wrote to the western artist in 1897 from Washington. After the death of his wife Alice Lee in 1884, Roosevelt moved temporarily to the Bad Lands in the Dakota Territory, where he owned two cattle ranches. In 1888, Century Magazine published a series of articles about the West written by Roosevelt and illustrated by Remington. In a May article, Roosevelt told the story of his daring capture of three thieves who had stolen a boat from his Elkhorn Ranch. Remington depicted their capture in this painting.

By Luis Today, the meanest cowboy in the whole entire West has just come out of jail. It is Bad Bart. After getting free, he went to his secret hiding place at the old bar, where he got some supplies to rob the biggest bank in town. Bad Bart rode off for the bank on his white horse, Jeff. When Bad Bart got there, he shot the door open and took all the money. The sheriff heard about this and sent some or his best menJohn, jack, Alex and Tyler. All four of them headed for the bank and they got there just in time to get bad Bart. Bad Bart saw them and rode away as fast as he could but they surrounded him and he was captured once again. Now the town was saved from the bad Bart. The Man and the Horse
By Matt It all started in the Arizona desert. A tall man named Henry Parker wanted to ride a horse but the horse was mean. At first, he didn't know what to do. But then he thought he could tame the horse and that's what he did. After he tamed the lovely horse, he started to ride it. He rally loved it! He said, "Since I love this horse, I should name it. So he thought about it and he chose the name Black Beauty.
