In 1878 he began his studies at the newly formed School of the Fine Arts at Yale University in New Haven, CT, remaining there until 1880. This, along with a few months at the Art Students League in New York in 1886, was his only period of formal art training. In 1881 he roamed through the Dakotas, Montana, the Arizona Territory and Texas to document an era that was fast vanishing. He returned east and in 1882 had his first drawing published (25 Feb) in Ranch Life and the Hunting Trail (New York, 1888) (

Frederic Remington was born in 1861 in Canton, New York. His father who was a colonel in the cavalry, was a commander in the Civil War.
Remington was a person who liked to hunt, fish, and ride horses. He was a large person; just 5'9" tall, but he weighed 300 pounds.
He first visited the Montana Territory in 1881. He bought a sheep ranch in Kansas, but it was unsuccessful. Next he tried other kinds of businesses; a hardware store and a saloon.
He began painting pictures of the West and Indians. He loved drawing horses. He even had barn doors put on his studio so that he could bring the horses inside. His drawings appeared in Harper's Weekly magazine. In his lifetime he produced more than 3,000 drawings and paintings. A painting or drawing is a two-dimensional work of art. It has height and width.
At one time he was sent to Cuba to illustrate scenes from the Spanish-American War.
He loved a woman named Eva Caton (Caten) and he wanted to marry her. He proposed to her three times. She refused his proposal twice, but the third time, she said she would marry him.
Toward the end of his life he decided that he didn't want to just make "flat" pictures anymore, so he started making bronze sculptures of cowboys and western scenes. A sculpture is a three-dimensional work of art. It has height, width, and depth. You can view the work of art from all sides. He made 22 sculptures in all. The first works were made by sand casting and the later ones with the lost-wax process.

He studied art at Yale University, called back home in 1880 by the death of his father, Remington was given a minor position in the state capital through the influence of an uncle. He traveled to the newly expanding western part of the United States in 1881 and ended up illustrating outdoor scenes for Harper's and Collier's magazines. After 3 attempts Remington was finally successful in winning the hand of his bride, Eva Caton, taking her back with him to Kansas City, where her presence gave his life a long needed stability.

Click here for audio of Episode 590. Today, a fable of innocence and experience. The University of Houston's College of Engineering presents this series about the machines that make our civilization run, and the people whose ingenuity created them. I finished high school in the Western logging town of Roseburg, Oregon. A couple of the older boys had summer jobs with the movies. They'd fall off horses for $5.00 a take. Next best to movies was riding in the rodeo. But the movement of Western horse and rider touched us all. We shared a deep-rooted vision of motion, masculinity, and rough-hewn grace. No one did more to shape that shared vision than Frederic Remington. His sketches, paintings and wild kinetic bronzes still defined the West we knew in the late '40s. By now John Ford was building Remington tableaux into his Western movies. He openly copied Remington's composition and palette to gain realism. Remington grew up on a diet of military glory. His father became a Civil War hero when he engaged his men in a foolish action that got most of them killed. Remington was 15 when Custer lay hold on the American imagination with his fiasco. In 1881, young Remington went West to find that kind of glory for himself.

Frederic Remington (1861-1909)
Nowhere is the American West to be found more completely illustrated than in the works of Frederic Remington. Born in upstate New York on October 1, 1861, by age 19, he had distiguished himself as a football player and pugilist at Yale. Leaving Yale and the East upon his father's death, he arrived on the western plains in 1880 and found the demanding life to his liking, excelling in the use of the lariat and six-gun. He became friends with the working men of the times, prospected for gold, rode with military troops on campaigns, and roamed such fabled routes as the Santa Fe Trail and Bozeman Road. Remington quickly realized that he was witnessing the end of an era. As he wrote later in Collier's Weekly : "I knew the wild riders and the vacant land were about to vanish forever-and the more I considered the subject, the bigger the 'forever' loomed." Five years later, with his inheritance exhausted and a net worth of three dollars, Remington arrived in New York City packing his voluminous portfolios resolved to break into art and illustration. Initial successes were thin, yet within 18 months editors were seeking him out; his painting, "The Courier's Nap on the Trail" appeared at the annual exhibition at the National Academy. Within a few years he was recognized as the foremost western illustrator, short story author (Roosevelt preferred him to Owen Wister and Bret Harte) and sculptor of his day. Yet he continued to roam each summer for the increasingly elusive characters of the Old West. Fascinated with and befriended by the Indians, Remington anticipated the last rebellion by the Sioux. Narrowly escaping death in combat in the Badlands, he rushed east to document the events for

Teddy Roosevelt (on horseback) leads cavalrymen in their historic 1898 charge during the Spanish-American War. Also featured is "The Alert," depicting a "Buffalo Soldier," one of the African-American soldiers who served on the Western frontier after the Civil War. All artwork is featured in a combination of 24-karat gold and nickel with a highly polished blackened silver-nitride background for maximum detail and contrast.
