Research
Project
Libaries have been filled with books and articles about Rembrandt, but the number of questions that keeps arising around this great Dutch painter only increases. Written documents about his thinking on art and his daily practice are scarce. His paintings however, is the category of documents which is extremely rich when it becomes to these questions. The Rembrandt Research Project (RRP) started its operations in 1968. RRP From the beginning, it has received finacial support from the Netherlands Organisation for the Advancementof Scientific Research (NWO). The objective of the project was to examine Rembrand's painted oeuvre and to compile a critical cataloque of his paintings. There was a need for such an undertaking since the image of Rembrandt's oeuvre had been distorted by numerous over-optimistic attributions, a process that had already begun during Rembrandt's lifetime. The time seemed ripe for such a research project, also because the possibilities of scientific reseasrch into paintings had improved considerbaly. Moreover, modern travelling facilities enabled the RRP teeam members to examine the circa 600 paintings scattered all over the world, within a limited period of time. In was decided that the project was to be undertaken by a team of art historians, in close co-operation with researchers from other disciples. In 1968 the team was composed of professor J. Bruyn (University of Amsterdam); professor J.A. Emmens (state University of Utrecht), until his death in 1971; professor J.G. van Gelder (University of Utrecht), until 1980; B. Haak (Amsterdam Historical Museum), Dr S.H. Levie (Amsterdam Historical Museum and later the Rijksmuseum) and Dr P.J.J. van Tiel (Rijksmuseum).

REMBRANDT Harmenszoon van Rijn
(b. 1606, Leiden, d. 1669, Amsterdam)
Biography
Rembrandt was born in Leiden on July 15, 1606- his full name Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn. He was the son of a miller. Despite the fact that he came from a family of relatively modest means, his parents took great care with his education. Rembrandt began his studies at the Latin School, and at the age of 14 he was enrolled at the University of Leiden. The program did not interest him, and he soon left to study art - first with a local master, Jacob van Swanenburch, and then, in Amsterdam, with Pieter Lastman, known for his historical paintings. After six months, having mastered everything he had been taught, Rembrandt returned to Leiden, where he was soon so highly regarded that although barely 22 years old, he took his first pupils. One of his students was the famous artist Gerrit Dou. Rembrandt moved to Amsterdam in 1631; his marriage in 1634 to Saskia van Uylenburgh, the cousin of a successful art dealer, enhanced his career, bringing him in contact with wealthy patrons who eagerly commissioned portraits. An exceptionally fine example from this period is the Portrait of Nicolaes Ruts (1631, Frick Collection, New York City). In addition, Rembrandt's mythological and religious works were much in demand, and he painted numerous dramatic masterpieces such as
