One is a masterpiece of the "drip," or pouring, technique, the radical method that Pollock contributed to Abstract Expressionism. Moving around an expanse of canvas laid on the floor, Pollock would fling and pour ropes of paint across the surface. One The Surrealists' embrace of accident as a way to bypass the conscious mind sparked Pollock's experiments with the chance effects of gravity and momentum on falling paint. Yet although works like One have neither a single point of focus nor any obvious repetition or pattern, they sustain a sense of underlying order. This and the physicality of Pollock's method have led to comparisons of his process with choreography, as if the works were the traces of a dance. Some see in paintings like One the nervous intensity of the modern city, others the primal rhythms of nature.

James Coddington, Chief Conservator, The Museum of Modern Art was interviewed by Anna Hammond, Editor-in-Chief of MoMA , the Museum's magazine.
Anna Hammond: Intentionality is one of the key issues addressed in Jackson Pollock, and there's been a lot of discussion over the way Pollock workedwhether he made conscious decisions or not. You and conservator Carol Mancusi Ungaro of the Menil Collection in Houston are doing intensive research on his materials, techniques, and methods. What have you been finding?
James Coddington: I think that one of the things that's emerging with our study is that Pollock had a pretty clear notion of how his materials handled, how they worked, how they interacted with one another. And there's a level of consciousness, intention, about that that liberates him to paint as unconsciously as he does. He might be just grabbing materials that seem appropriate in the flush of the moment of creation, but he hasn't got a full universe of materials to grab. He's narrowed that universe because he knows that the materials are going to work and because he's come to know how they're going to work. So, I think that there is a great deal of consciousness, balance, use of materials, and craft, that frees him to make as apparently unconsciously as he does.
AH: That reminds me of something that Henry Adams wrote: "Chaos is the law of nature. Order is the dream of man."

In Full Fathom Five the initial impression of a vibrant sea-green hue is relieved on inspection by the variety of shades and inflections which combine to produce an idea of water and of depth. A strenuous black calligraphy loops and curls round the volume of green; mottled and patchy areas of white interact with these, while the green is 'seasoned' with amounts of other colors. Pollock has embedded nails, tacks, buttons, keys, coins, a torn cigarette, matches, and paint-tube tops into the surface - witnesses of the accidental nature of the 'painting' process and of the legitimacy of the trouser-pocket paraphemalia - as three-dimensional textural agents to amplify the signifying potential of the image. These alien materials, however, are subordinate to the overall design. They are, interestingly, almost invisible in normal reproductions of the painting; suffocated by the overwhelming presence of paint their function is analogous to the smears and touches of color, providing resistance and difference in the optical pattern. © 16 Jul 2002

Fractal expressionism By Richard Taylor, Adam Micolich and David Jonas Experimental observations of the paintings of Jackson Pollock reveal that the artist was exploring ideas in fractals and chaos before these topics entered the scientific mainstream Can science be used to further our understanding of art? This question meets with reservations from both scientists and artists. However, for the abstract paintings produced by Jackson Pollock in the 1940s and 1950s, scientific objectivity proves to be an essential tool for determining their fundamental content. Pollock dripped paint from a can onto vast canvases on the floor of his barn. Although recognized as a crucial advance in the evolution of modern art, the precise quality and significance of the patterns created by this unorthodox technique remain controversial. Here we analyse Pollock's patterns and show that they are fractal. In other words, they display the fingerprint of nature. In contrast to the broken lines painted by conventional brush strokes on canvas, Pollock used a constant stream of paint to produce a uniquely continuous trajectory as it splattered onto the canvas below. A typical canvas would be reworked many times over a period of several months, with Pollock building up a dense web of paint trajectories. This repetitive and cumulative process -sometimes called "continuous dynamic" painting- is strikingly similar to the way in which patterns evolve in nature. Nature, chaos and art

Biography On Jackson Pollock
Pollock, Jackson (1912-1956), American abstract painter, who developed a technique for applying paint by pouring or dripping it onto canvases laid on the floor. With this method Pollock produced intricate interlaced webs of paint, as in Black and White (1948, private collection). Rapid and seemingly impulsive execution like Pollock's became a hallmark of abstract expressionism, a movement that emphasized the spontaneous gestures of the artist.
Born in Cody, Wyoming, Pollock moved to New York City in 1930 to study at the Art Students League with American artist Thomas Hart Benton. Pollock's early paintings, realistic scenes of life in America, clearly reflect Benton's influence. As his career progressed, Pollock rejected his teacher's representational subject matter, but retained Benton's emphasis on rhythmic, dynamic composition. In New York, Pollock was also exposed to the work of Mexican mural painters José Clemente Orozco and David Alfaro Siqueiros. Their experimental techniques, large scale, and use of industrial paints had a lasting impact on Pollock's work.
The surrealism movement was another significant influence upon Pollock, whose ideas about the relevance of the unconscious to artistic creativity coincided with his own experience. As part of treatment for alcoholism, Pollock underwent psychoanalysis; his therapists, who followed the teachings of Swiss psychiatrist Carl Gustav Jung, encouraged him to analyze his drawings for clues to his unconscious mental processes. Surrealist artists had also hoped to tap into the unconscious through automatism, a technique in which the artist's hand wanders across the painting's surface with as little conscious control as possible. In early works such as The She-Wolf (1943, Museum of Modern Art, New York City), Pollock combined surrealist automatism with subject matter that reflects his interests in ancient sculpture, non-Western art, and the work of Spanish artist Pablo Picasso.

Lesson Plan: Feelings in Color
Mark Rothko (American, born Russia, 1903-1970). Orange and Yellow, 1956, oil on canvas, 91 x 71" Gift of Seymour H. Knox, 1956 INTRODUCTION This lesson is an exercise in looking and thinking, making comparisons and connections. It relates to elements in all categories of the comprehension strategies of the third-grade language arts program: relate ideas, organize information, synthesize ideas, evaluate ideas, and generate and apply ideas. The family project could relate to the science and math curricula by turning the students' survey results into graphs and charts, followed by an analysis of the compiled data. INFORMATION FOR THE TEACHER Although artists rarely want to be categorized, the label "abstract expressionism" aptly describes their work. The paintings are completely abstract, with no recognizable objects from the real world (another term for completely abstract is NON-OBJECTIVE), and the purpose of their art is to create expression and emotion.

The canvas teems with bold, black arabesques, several of which end in fishtails. In the lower third of the composition , delicate colors emerge from this turmoil, much as a rainbow peeks through storm clouds. In his short life, Pollock created a body of work that helped change the course of Modern art. Following the lead of the European Surrealists , many of whom lived in New York Abstract Expressionism or the New York School and included other painters represented in the Art Institute's collection. palette knives instead of brushes. This process led to the term action painting. He challenged the concept of easel painting by working on large canvases placed either on the floor or fixed to a wall. With no apparent beginning or end, the resulting paintings extend beyond the edges of the canvas. Pollock's first action paintings appeared around 1947, shortly after the conclusion of World War II.
