, abstract expressionist painter. A pioneering leader of the New York school, Pollock is almost as well known for the myths about his chaotic life as he is for his drip and stain works. Although his departure from painting conventions left him open to criticism, the moment was right for cultural breakthroughs after World War II. The Old World looked to the New, and here was this very American son of the romantic West. Both outsider and seeker, Pollock was unsophisticated, intellectually uncluttered, straightforward, and imaginative. He read little, spoke seldom in company when sober, and was a good listener to those he respected. His unique contribution was to express emotion through abstraction. As much phenomenon as genius, Pollock was born not on a sheep ranch as myth has it but in Cody, Wyoming. In 1930 he became a student of the regionalist artist Thomas Hart Benton at New York's Art Students League. He was soon a Benton family intimate, taking the feisty, hard-drinking Benton as a role model, artistically and behaviorally. He was also influenced by his museum visits and studies of Rubens and El Greco. As he moved on from Ryder, Miró, Matisse, and finally Picasso, he worked his way through cubism and surrealism, extending them to form his own statement as a master of "direct" painting. Pollock's attempts at therapy for alcoholism were not effective ultimately, but he was sober from 1948 through most of 1950. Two of his therapists were Jungians and influenced his work, which he saw as coming directly from the unconscious. Discarding easel and palette, Pollock laid his unprimed canvas flat. This allowed him to work it from all sides, even to be

Last Modified 03/25/2004 10:40:35 AM EST Jackson Pollock (1912-1956) is regarded as the undisputed leader of the Abstract Expressionist movement. In 1945, he married fellow artist Lee Krasner (1908-1984) and moved from New York City to Long Island's East End. With a loan from art dealer Peggy Guggenheim, they purchased a small homestead on one and a quarter acres overlooking Accabonac Creek in The Springs, near East Hampton . Here, in this serene community of farmers and baymen, Pollock created his masterpieces - works whose innovative style and technique stunned the art world and continue to challenge viewers today.
The preservation and development of this unique site has been undertaken by the Stony Brook Foundation, Inc., a non-profit affiliate of Stony Brook University , one of four university centers of the State University of New York. To meet its operating expenses, the Pollock-Krasner House and Study Center depends entirely on donations through the Stony Brook Foundation. Open May, September and October by appointment only. Guided tours Thursday, Friday and Saturday, on the hour from 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. Admission $10.

In the fall Of 1930 Pollock came to New York and studied under Thomas Hart Benton at the Art Students League. Benton encouraged him throughout the succeeding decade. By the early 1930s Pollock admired the murals of Jose Clemente 0rozco and Diego Rivera. Although he traveled widely throughout the United States during the 1930s, much of Pollock's time was spent in New York, where he settled permanently in 1935 and worked on the WPA Federal Art Project from 1935 to 1942. In 1936 he worked in David Alfarc Siqueiros's experimental workshop in New York. Pollock's first solo show was held at Peggy Guggenheim's Art of This Century gallery in New York in 1943. Guggenheim gave him a contract that lasted through 1947, permitting him to devote all his time to painting. Prior to 1947 Pollock's work reflected the influence of Picasso and Surrealism. During the early 1940s he contributed paintings to several exhibitions of Surrealist and abstract art, including

The Joy
of
Painting
When you abstract the essence of music and visual art, an underlying structure, form and rhythm can be discerned. The notes, rhythm and tempo of a musical piece can evoke thoughts, feelings and sensations, much the same as colors, texture, strokes and shapes in a painting. This is certainly true in my art, which is a mirroring of my internal landscape as well as a reflection of what is happening externally. My paintings, because they are abstract, are essentially energy made visible. They are an exploration of the interplay between form and formlessness, emergence and dissolution, using color, texture, and the strokes of the palette knife upon the canvas.
