The Faeds: A Remarkable Artistic Family
article by Dr David Steel Gatehouse of Fleet is the home of the Faeds, a remarkable family of Scottish artists. Of the six children of James and Mary McGeoch born at Barlay Mill, Gatehouse between 1819 and 1829, no fewer than five would have their work exhibited at the Royal Academy in London and the Royal Scottish Academy in Edinburgh. The remaining son William would become a successful farmer in Australia. John, the eldest of James and Mary's children was born in 1819 and showed early artistic promise, beginning to paint miniatures of the local dignitaries at the age of nine. In 1840 John left his native town to develop his career in Edinburgh and had his first work accepted by the RSA in 1841. He would continue to exhibit at the Academy till 1895, becoming an Associate Member of the RSA in 1847 and a full Member in 1851. John's brother Thomas also showed an early interest in art but was apprenticed to a draper in Castle Douglas. However, soon after his father's death in 1842 John persuaded Thomas to join him in Edinburgh, where he helped finance his studies at the Trustees Academy. Thomas first exhibited at the RSA in 1844. Before long John and Thomas were joined in the capital by their brothers James and George who took up careers as engravers. At the time of the 1851 census we find the whole family in Edinburgh with sister Susan, herself a talented artist keeping house for Thomas and William and mother Mary with James and George.

Introduction About drawing:
doing it and collecting it
The dictionary definition of drawing is - 1. a picture or plan made by means of lines on a surface, esp. one made with a pencil or pen. 2. a sketch or outline. 3. the art of making drawings; draughtsmanship. This can range from one or two spare, magical lines depicting a rower, or perhaps a face by Matisse, to Leonardo's cartoon of the Madonna and Child at the National Gallery. I both draw and collect drawings. I draw for different reasons: sometimes to record a situation quickly, like drawing a fast moving horse at the circus, or other drawings as aids to working on a painting, these are usually then destroyed. I also make highly finished drawings that exist in their own right, and are of equal importance to a painting.I have always carried a sketch-book, and check that I have it when I leave the house, as I do my glasses, keys and handkerchief. Timothy Clifford in his introduction to last year's catalogue for Master Drawings London, bemoans the passing of the collector of drawings, and doubts if Tracey Emin and Rachael Whiteread collect drawings. I would bet that both these artists have collections of other artists' drawings. I have a large collection of drawings and watercolours. Too large to begin to list, but including works by Sir Joseph Noel Paton, Stanley Spencer, George Grosz, David Hockney, Colin Self, Damien Hirst and Gavin Turk, to select just a few.

Dunfermline
Dunfermline (in Gaelic the fort on the crooked linn (glen) ), is a burgh (City) in Fife Scotland that sits on high ground 3 miles from the shore of the Firth of Forth , northwest of Edinburgh . The city is intersected from north to south by Pittencrieff Glen, a deep, picturesque and tortuous ravine, from which the city derives its name and at the bottom of which flows Lyne Burn. In 1991 Dunfermline had a population of 55,100. Dunfermline is the site of the naval base of Rosythe. And major industries in Dunfermline include. engineering, electronics, and textiles. The history of Dunfermline goes back to a remote period, for the early Celtic monks known as Culdee s had an establishment here; but its fame and prosperity date from the marriage of Malcolm Canmore and his queen Margaret , which took place in the town in 1070. The king then lived in a tower on a mound surrounded on three sides by the glen. A fragment of this castle still exists in Pittencrieff Park, a little west of the later palace. Under the influence of Queen Margaret in 1075 the foundations were laid of the Benedictine priory , which was raised to the rank of an abbey by David I (see Dunfermline Abbey Robert the Bruce gave the town its charter in 1322, though in his

Following Hugh Miller's death in 1856, the Museum purchased, by public subscription, his collection of fossils (1859). Another major acquisition was the collection of arms and armour formed by Sir Joseph Noel Paton, purchased in 1905.

The National Museums of Scotland now function on six sites. In 1970 the Royal Scottish Museum incorporated the Scottish United Services Museum at Edinburgh Castle, founded in 1930 as part of the act of commemoration for Scottish servicemen killed in the First World War. It incorporates fine collections of edged weapons and firearms, uniforms, decorations, fine and applied art and archives relating to all three branches of the armed services in Scotland (The Scottish United Services Museum closed on 27 April 1998 to allow redevelopment work to take place prior to reopening in April 2000).
In 1975 the Museum of Flight was established at East Fortune Airfield in East Lothian to house the Museum's extensive collections relating to the history of flight.
