Next biography Frederick Parrish was born July 25, 1870, into Philadelphia's Quaker community and was exposed to a rich cultural life both at home and through European travel. He later adopted the family name Maxfield as a middle and then professional name. From his father, Stephen, an acclaimed etcher and landscape painter, he inherited his talent for natural observation and an understanding of the business of art. (The senior Parrish ran a stationery shop until 1877, at which time he devoted himself full-time to his art.) Parrish's mother, Elizabeth Bancroft, whose family the artist credited for his life-long interest in machinery, also instilled in him a love of music. From 1894 to 1896, Parrish taught interior and mural decoration at the Pennsylvania School of Industrial Art, now incorporated into the University of the Arts. He maintained a studio at the School until 1898, when he established permanent residence in the celebrated artists' colony of Cornish, New Hampshire. Parrish's commercial success came early. In 1894, he received a commission to decorate the new home of the Mask and Wig Club, the University of Pennsylvania's drama society. The centerpiece of Parrish's fairy-tale designs was the

A short biography of MAXFIELD PARRISH (1870-1966) Photo courtesy of the Dartmouth College Library. Every hundred years or so, we find an artist whose talent and art make a statement that leaves an indelible mark in the consciousness of the generations that come in contact with his work. Maxfield Parrish is such an artist. It is fitting that in 1995, the 125th anniversary of his birth and the hundredth anniversary of his first published work, his images and illustrations are still being sought after and enjoyed by a widespread section of international collectors. Fred Maxfield Parrish (MP to his family, friends, and close associates) was born July 25, 1870 in Philadelphia to Stephen Parrish, a well known artist and etcher and his wife Elizabeth Bancroft Parrish. Young Maxfield was a descendant of generations of beloved Philadelphia Quaker physicians. His father Stephen had been the first to break away from medicine or pharmacy and into the bohemian world of the professional artist. Young Parrish had all the advantages that his comfortably well off family could offer, including summer painting trips with his father visiting the major museum of Europe during his teens. He and Stephen remained close all their lives and were warmly devoted to one another. Parrish attended Haverford College where he graduated in 1892 as a Phi Kappa Sigma. He entered the Pennsylvania Academy in 1892 and stayed there through 1894, auditing some of Howard Pyle's classes at the Drexel Institute whenever he could. It was at the Drexel that he met the beautiful instructor Lydia Austin (1872-1953) whom he courted and married in 1895. It was in 1895, too, that he also received his first cover commission from Harper's Bazaar. This important first assignment gave him the financial means to marry Lydia at the age of 25. The marriage produced four children: Dillwyn (1904), Max Jr. (1906), Stephen (1909) and Jean (1911).

Cornish Colony Museum Foundation Featuring the original art of Maxfield Parrish It's Back! After 28 years, Dingleton Farm painting returned to its owner Dingleton Farm (1956) by Maxfield Parrish shown with Alma Gilbert on display in Cornish, New Hampshire. This small 11.5" x 15.5" oil-on-board painting executed by Maxfield Parrish was acquired by Alma Gilbert on January 16, 1975. It hung originally in her San Mateo, California gallery in the same room where she was exhibiting "Daybreak" for the first time. The painting was stolen from her gallery on March 15, 1975 and had remained undiscovered until the same day of the week, January 16, 2003 (the 28th anniversary of when she acquired it), when a California auction house contacted Mrs. Gilbert for information about a Maxfield Parrish work which had just been brought in for sale. After nine months of exhaustive legal maneuvers, convincing the San Mateo police department, the auction house, the painting's consignors, and the State Farm Insurance Company that Dingleton Farm was indeed a stolen work and that it was the legal property of Mrs. Gilbert, the little Parrish was at last returned to Alma Gilbert. It arrived in Cornish, New Hampshire on the exact anniversary of the date on which State Farm insurance had funded its loss 28 years previously, September 23, 2003. and for the remainder of the exhibition season, both Daybreak and Dingleton Farm were hung together in a common display room, just as they were 28 years ago.

Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, his youth was one of privilege and artistic education, received both from his father, Stephen Parrish, a landscape artist, and from extensive travels throughout Europe. Young Parrish attended the prestigious Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and then studied under the famous illustrator Howard Pyle. Later, he moved to Cornish, New Hampshire, adopted the family name "Maxfield" as his professional name, and started a career as an illustrator, working for popular magazines including Life, Collier's, and The Ladies' Home Journal.
