Links Maxfield Parrish (1870-1966) spent a brief period studying architecture, then dropped out to study painting at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art. Attempting to study with Howard Pyle The historian-illustrator Jay Hamlin had a profound affect on Parrish's work. Hamlin taught a style he called "dynamic symmetry", which offered artists a formula for reproducing natural proportions in their work. Parrish adapted this system to fit his own needs, and soon began producing precisely articulated works, whose vivid colors and dramatic compositions soon caught the public's attention. Even today, the cobalt blue paint used so frequently in his work is called "Parrish blue." By the age of 25, Parrish was commissioned to produce a series of magazine covers for Harper's Bazaar. When his brilliant painting "The Sandman" was completed in 1897, Parrish was admitted into the Society of American Artists. Major commissions began to occupy the artist, and he attracted a group of fellow artists and art students to his estate in Plainfield, New Hampshire. Between 1904 and 1935, Parrish's fame continued to grow. He was flooded with work and his fee soared to $2,000 per illustration. His work was published in

Viewing the same works time and time again has made his art lose some of its spontaneity. Everyone and his atelier has seen it so much that it has become part of the cultural wallpaper; the equivalent of the art world's background noise. But I have again discovered what beautiful noise it is. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Maxfield Parrish was one of the premier illustrators. His painstaking technique and dramatic subject matter were, in my opinion, unparalleled and much of his vision still holds up against current illustrators and their methods. Maxfield Parrish Vignettes brings back the impact he had on me the first time I saw his work. The lush clarity of his art is reproduced here in four small volumes and encased as a boxed set. You would think it would have been easier and more economical to produce one large volume with all the same prints, but somehow this is much more fun and whimsical.
