Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica: Vol 17 (1943), photographed by Alfred Stieglitz, 1918 Extended Profile BIRTHDATE: Nov. 15, 1887 BIRTHPLACE: Sun Prairie, Wis. EDUCATION: Graduated from the Chatham Protestant Episcopal Institute in Williamsburg, Va. in 1904. Studied art at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Art Students League in New York. FAMILY BACKGROUND: Ancestors were from Ireland and Hungary; her family were farmers. She grew up in both Sun Prairie and Williamsburg, Va. DESCRIPTION OF ACCOMPLISHMENTS: The artistic brilliance of Georgia O'Keeffe revolutionized modern art in both her time and in the present. With her paintings she vividly portrayed the power and emotion of objects of nature. This was first seen in her charcoal drawings of silhouetted bud-like forms exhibited in 1916 that brought her fame. During the 1920s , she explored this theme in her magnified paintings of flowers which to this day enchant people amorously, although her purpose was to convey that nature in all its beauty was as powerful as the widespread industrialization of the period. After spending a summer in New Mexico, Georgia O'Keeffe, enthralled by the barren landscape and expansive skies of the desert, would explore the subject of animal bones in her paintings of the 1930s and 1940s. Just as with the flowers, she painted the bones magnified and captured the stillness and remoteness of them, while at the same time expressing a sense of beauty that lies within the desert.

Georgia O'Keeffe biography
Georgia O'Keeffe, American painter, was born to Frank O'Keeffe and Ida Totto O'Keeffe on November 15, 1887. At seventeen she began studying at the Art Institute of Chicago and later moved to New York to attend the Art Students League. She taught art in Texas before receiving her degree from Columbia University in South Carolina. It was during this time that she sent some of her drawings to a friend in New York who subsequently showed them to Alfred Stieglitz, the famous photographer who owned several art galleries. He showed some of this work at his art gallery, "291," without her consent. This infuriated O'Keeffe, who went to New York and demanded that he remove them. Instead, he convinced her to let him give her a show. The two were married in 1924 and remained together until his death in 1949. bodyOffer(6101) O'Keeffe is best known for her flower paintings which she created throughout her career. She also painted enlarged views of skulls, shells, and other natural forms. Critics labeled these paintings as erotic, but O'Keeffe objected to this interpretation of her work. She felt these critics were overlooking the sensual aspects of the paintings. O'Keeffe moved to New Mexico after her husband's death, beginning a love affair with the desert that would last until her death. She died in 1986 at the age of 98.

Georgia O'Keeffe Museum Overview: The Georgia O'Keeffe Museum, America's first art museum dedicated to the work of a woman artist of international stature, opened to the public in July, 1997 in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Devoted to preserving and presenting the life work of one of America's preeminent artists, the 13,000 square-foot museum houses a permanent collection of O'Keeffe's art unsurpassed by any museum in the world. The new museum, situated in an adobe building being renovated by architect Richard Gluckman, brings to downtown Santa Fe an outstanding selection of work by the artist most closely identified with the city and the Southwest. O'Keeffe: Georgia O'Keeffe was born in 1887 in Wisconsin. She made her first visit to Santa Fe in 1917 and lived and worked full-time in New Mexico from 1949 until her death in 1986. In the vanguard of American modernist painting, she was a pioneer both as a figurative artist and as an early proponent of abstraction. Her ability to adapt early modernist tenets to quintessentially American motifs helped develop Americans' appreciation for the pictorial and poetic possibilities of abstraction. Known for the reductive power and simplicity of her compositions, O'Keeffe felt a special affinity to the vast, austere landscape of the Southwest and explored the essence of her chosen subjects through a subtle balance of poetic allusion, intense color, and linear precision. In 1924, O'Keeffe married the photographer and modern art world impresario

When I think of death, I only regret that I will not be able to see this beautiful country anymore ...unless the Indians are right and my spirit will walk here after I am gone.
-Georgia O'Keeffe July 24, 1997
Web posted at: 2:14 p.m. EDT (1814 GMT) By CNN Interactive writer/editor Laurel Shannon (CNN) More than a decade after her death, Georgia O'Keeffe's determined spirit not only lingers in the burnt vistas and striated outcroppings of northern New Mexico, it has found a home. With rosy brown adobe, abundant skylights and white-washed walls, a museum in Santa Fe has synthesized the region's love for O'Keeffe with the painter's love for the landscape. And, if opening weekend was any indication, it's a dynamic combination. The Georgia O'Keeffe Museum, unveiled July 17, saw more than 3,000 visitors a day in its first four days. It began charging admission July 22, but director Peter Hassrick says lines remain long. The museum only holds about 200 visitors at a time. "I think (O'Keeffe) would've been pleased with the fact that her art is still appreciated, and I think she would've been very honored by the effort that has gone into making the museum a special place," he says.

Georgia O'Keeffe
Artist Introduction Born in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, Georgia O'Keeffe studied at the Art Institute of Chicago (1905) and the Art Students League in New York City (1907-1908). She worked briefly as a commercial artist in Chicago, and in 1912 she became interested in the principles of Oriental design. After working as a public school art supervisor in Amarillo, Texas (1912-1914), she attended art classes conducted by Arthur Wesley Dow at Columbia University. She instituted Dow's system of art education, based on recurring themes in Oriental art, in her teacher-training courses at West Texas State Normal College, where she served as department head (1916-1918). In 1916 Alfred Stieglitz, the well-known New York photographer and proponent of modernism, exhibited some of Georgia O'Keeffe's abstract drawings. In 1924 O'Keeffe and Stieglitz were married.

Pre-War American Painting
There have always been interesting American artists, and at least two 19th-century painters, Thomas Eakins and Winslow Homer, influenced the course of future art in the United States. During the 1920s and '30s, Edward Hopper and Georgia O'Keeffe emerged as the inspirational new painters of distinctive American traditions. Hopper's work was strongly realist, his still, precise images of desolation and isolated individuals reflecting the social mood of the times. O'Keeffe's art was more abstract, often based on enlarged plants and flowers, and infused with a kind of Surrealism she referred to as ``magical realism''. She may not have been a great painter, but her art was highly influential. © 14 Oct 2002, Nicolas Pioch Top Up Info

With a unique, innovative and original style, Georgia O'Keeffe stamped her independant mark on 20th century art and culture. Born into a Wisconsin farming family, which supported and appreciated individuality, Georgia knew her destiny as a teenager. "After we are through school," she told her classmates, "I am going to give up everything for my art. I am going to live a different kind of life from the rest of you girls." Iris 1929 (Dark Iris 2 1929) When she grew up, women were constrained by American society, in their dress, their education, in their opportunities. Georgia O'Keeffe did not care about these restraints. She dressed in plain, loose clothes, tied her hair back in a braid. She took her own ideas into her art, creating simple paintings with broad areas of smooth, delicate colours. A superb handling of few colours gave her work a lustre and life that matched the organic subjects. She spoke of why she painted flowers; "Nobody sees a flower - really - it is so small - we haven't time - and to see takes time like to have a friend takes time...So I said to myself - I'll paint what I see - what the flower is to me, but I'll paint it big and they will be surprised into taking time to look at it - I will make even busy New Yorkers take time to see what I see of flowers."

O'KEEFFE, GEORGIA TOTTO (1887-1986). Georgia Totto O'Keeffe, artist, daughter of Francis Calixtus and Ida (Totto) O'Keeffe, was born at Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, on November 15, 1887. By 1899 she had two brothers and four sisters. After her family moved to Virginia she attended Chatham Episcopal Institute, Chatham, Virginia, for two years of high school. In 1905 she attended the Art Institute of Chicago, and in 1907 she enrolled in the Art Students League, New York City, where she was awarded the Chase Still Life Scholarship. After a brief stint as a commercial artist in Chicago in 1909, she determined to leave art as a career and returned to Virginia. In the summer of 1912 at the University of Virginia she was inspired to return to art with the guidance of the Arthur Dow method of expression, as presented by her teacher, Alon Bement. The Dow method took her away from direct representation and into abstraction and the expression of feeling. Revitalized, O'Keeffe applied to teach art in the public school system of Amarillo, Texas. From 1912 to 1914 she was supervisor of art in the growing Panhandle town. She came to Texas out of a sense of adventure and romance derived from Western adventure stories. The Texas plains, she said, left her "beside myself. The openness. The dry landscape. The beauty of that wild world." She was somewhat removed socially from her colleagues and in conflict with the education board over expensive textbooks, and the school system terminated her teaching contract in July 1914 over a salary dispute. O'Keeffe went to New York to study with Arthur Dow at Columbia University and in the summers from 1913 to 1916 taught art at the University of Virginia. In the fall of 1915 she taught at Columbia College, Columbia, South Carolina, but resigned in February 1916 after being hired to teach at West Texas State Normal College (now West Texas State University) in Canyon in the fall of 1916.
