O'KEEFFE, GEORGIA
, artist. Born on a farm in Wisconsin, O'Keeffe studied representational art at the Art Institute of Chicago (1905-1906) and the Art Students League in New York (1907-1908). She worked as a commercial artist in Chicago for several years and then came under the influence of Arthur Wesley Dow, head of the fine arts department at Columbia Teachers College in New York. His teaching concerning the importance of patterning and other principles of abstraction freed O'Keeffe from the dicta of realism and inspired her to return to fine art. In 1912 she became the art teacher for the Amarillo, Texas, public school system, where her painting became deeply imbued with the western light and landscape. She was also influenced by radical European ideas about art gleaned from books and journals, and letters from friends in New York. After she had begun to develop her own expressionistic style, photographer Alfred Stieglitz exhibited her charcoal drawings and watercolors at his small avant-garde gallery in New York in 1916 and 1917. He was a strong advocate of the first generation of American modern artists, including John Marin, Arthur Dove, and Marsden Hartley, and he brought O'Keeffe into this circle, convinced that she expressed a female sensibility in a new, original, and bold manner. In 1923, the year before their marriage, he sponsored her first one-artist exhibit, followed by others virtually every year. O'Keeffe won early acceptance: the Brooklyn Museum exhibited her work in 1927 and the Museum of Modern Art in 1929; the Whitney Museum of American Art first purchased her work in 1932 as did the Metropolitan Museum of Art two years later. Her first retrospective was at the Art Institute of Chicago in 1943.

Fem-Biographie Georgia O'Keeffe

Fem-Biography Georgia O'Keeffe
born on November 15th, 1887, near Sun Prairie, Wisconsin died on March 6th, 1986, in Santa Fe, New Mexico American artist Although she had wanted to live until she was 125, she "only" made it to 98. However, she did help prepare the large exhibition of her works at the New York Metropolitan Museum to commemorate her 100th birthday. Georgia O'Keeffe is the best known and most successful American woman painter; her larger-than-life, almost abstract paintings of flowers are world famous. But it was not only as an artist that she drew attention to herself. Her tremendous personal magnetism fascinated people, for she was "exceptionally beautiful and spontaneous, combined with spiritual and emotional clarity and a wonderful intensity with which she enjoyed every moment of her life to the full." (Stieglitz). She was quick-witted and could be staggeringly direct. For the younger generation she was the epitome of an independent, creative woman who single-mindedly went her own way, never willing to make compromises which might hinder her in her painting. She grew up as a farmer’s daughter with a large number of siblings in a family dominated by strong women and energetically pursued her goal to become an artist from an early age. She studied in Chicago and New York and earned a living by working as a design draftswoman and art teacher. Her life took a decisive turn when Alfred Stieglitz, well-known photographer and owner of the avant-garde New York gallery "291," became passionately interested in her art and organised her first exhibition in 1917. He was her sponsor and manager, while she inspired him to take hundreds of unusual, sensitive portraits and nude photographs of her. In spite of this intensive collaboration, she always remained independent, even after her marriage to the dominating Stieglitz, who was 23 years older than she.

"When I was still a little girl, I used to think that since I couldn't do what I wanted to at least I could paint as I wanted to, and say what I wanted to when I painted." Georgia O'Keeffe. Georgia O'Keeffe is known for her brilliantly colored paintings with confident shapes and simple patterns. She painted a great many floral paintings which were large pieces with the flower exaggerated and enlarged to completely fill the canvas, then stylized to their most essential forms. She is also known for her Southwest paintings which include adobe buildings, desert mountain panoramas or floating cow skulls against rich blue skies. The emphasis on the simplest aspects of the shapes created a surrealistic dynamic that is captivating. bodyOffer(19475) O'Keeffe was born on November 15, 1887 in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin. She knew from a young age that she would be an artist when she grew up. She studied first at the Art Institute of Chicago. After stopping her education due to a bout of typhoid, she resumed study in 1907 at the Art Student League in New York. She was following a family tradition of educated women- an idea not prevalent at that time. Even as she excelled in her studies it was believed that she would end up teaching art rather than making it. Georgia moved for a time with her family to Virginia, but in 1914, when a teaching job opened in Amarillo, Texas, she took it. After two years she went to New York's Columbia Teacher's College, and took a job at Columbia College in South Carolina.

Purchase In 1923, O'Keeffe began painting flowers and leaves, creating some of her best-known work. Oriental Poppies and related flower paintings have been seen by some scholars as her response to such modern photographers as Alfred Stieglitz and Paul Strand, who "zoomed in" on and closely cropped their subject in an attempt to discover its core essence. O'Keeffe emulates this technique in her compositions. By creating an oversized close-up of the poppies and removing them from any discernible context, she abstracts the organic forms into black and red shapes.
Oak Leaves, Pink and Gray
1929, oil on canvas, 33-1/8" x 18"
General Budget Fund In Oak Leaves, Pink and Gray , the artist examines every crevice and vein of the leaves, exploring the harmony of decay and rebirth in nature, a theme prevalent in her work. Here, O'Keeffe has created a composition that is both objective, because the leaves are a recognizable subject, and abstract, because the broad expanse of color compels the viewer to read the image in terms of pure form and color. G eorgia Totto O'Keeffe was born in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin on November 15, 1887, the second child and first daughter in a family that would eventually include two sons and five daughters. Her parents were dairy farmers, but Georgia knew she was going to be an artist from early on. She and her sister were both taught to draw by a grammar school teacher who had been boarding at their home, an taught to paint by Sarah Mann, a local watercolor artist. Georgia's parents moved from Wisconsin to Virginia in 1902, hoping to get some relief from the long, cold winters which had claimed the lives of three of her father's brothers. By the time she was a teenager, Georgia had several years of artistic training to her credit, and received much encouragement from Elizabeth Willis, her art teacher at the Chatham Episcopal Institute. Georgia graduated in 1905, and continued her art studies at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago where she received top honors for her first year, but could not return for the second year, due to a serious bout with typhoid fever. It wasn't until September 1907, that she was able to resume her studies, this time choosing New York's Art Student League, where she earned a scholarship for still life in the class of
