Wentworth is an attractive old town located 1047 km west of Sydney via the Great, Mid Western and Sturt Highways and 37 m above sea-level. The population is currently around 1500. Wentworth's history is inseparable from its position where the Murray and Darling Rivers meet. The world's fourth-largest river system it drains one-fifth of Australia. Explorer Charles Sturt arrived at the junction in 1830 and identified the Darling as "a new and beautiful stream coming apparently from the north". He weighed anchor opposite a tree which he marked. This tree, known as Sturt's Tree, still retains his imprint and is located by the riverbank in Willow Bend Caravan Park at the southern end of Darling St. There is an explanatory plaque. Sturt was followed by Thomas Mitchell who headed down the Darling to its junction with the Murray in 1836. After Joseph Hawdon, Charles Bonney and Charles Sturt overlanded cattle from Sydney to Adelaide in 1838 other squatters began to follow them out into the new pastures along the Murray. The intersection became known as Hawdon's Ford as Hawdon regularly used it as a spot for driving his stock across the Murray. This established its central importance as a river crossing for stockmen headed to Adelaide and the site gradually became a focal point of the surrounding pastoral district.

Substantial and historic service centre in the heart of the Riverina.

Hay is an important pastoral town of the Riverina area. Located 728 km west of Sydney via the Great and Mid Western Highways it is situated alongside the Murrumbidgee River at the junction of the Sturt, Cobb and Mid Western Highways, halfway between Sydney and Adelaide. 94 m above sea-level and with a population of 2817 it is surrounded by completely flat, open, treeless saltbush plains. Indeed the road from Hay to Maude is as flat as western Queensland or the Nullarbor Plain. Joseph Furphy, who lived in Hay while bullock carting about the region in the 1870s, set much of his famous novel Such is Life (1903) within the district. This descriptive passage from the novel provides some insight into the terrain about Hay: 'the dark boundary of the scrub country disappears northward in the glassy haze, and in front, southward, the level black-soil plains of Riverina proper mark a straight sky-line, broken here and there by a monumental clump or pine-ridge. And away beyond the horizon, southward still, the geodesic curve carries that monotony across the zone of salt-bush, myall and swamp box; across the Lachlan and Murrumbidgee and on to the Victorian border.' The road between Hay and Balranald This flatness makes the tree-lined streets of Hay (very attractive in autumn) ideal for bicycles, which are a common sight around town. Hay is also the centre of an area which is known as the best medium merino wool region in Australia. Some of the local studs are famous in pastoral circles - Mungadal, Uardry and Cedar Grove. Mungadal lies west of town adjacent the Sturt Highway. The Uardry property supplied the image of the ram for the former Australian shilling.

    Dulwich Gallery
The Dulwich Picture Gallery, College Road, London , has long been linked to Dulwich College, founded in 1619 by Edward Alleyn (1566-1626). Alleyn was a friend of Shakespeare and a successful actor-manager, purchasing the manor of Dulwich in 1605. He started a charitable institution to combine almshouses and a school for poor boys and left many of his possessions to his foundation including his pictures. The collection expanded in 1686 when William Cartwright (1606-86) bequeathed his paintings. Noel Desenfans (1745-1807), a Frenchman and teacher of languages, left his picture collection to his life long friend Sir Francis Bourgeois RA (1756-1811) who subsequently left the collection to Dulwich College in 1810. The Picture Gallery (completed in 1813) was designed by Sir John Soane (1753-1837) and was one of the first purpose-built picture galleries in Britain. Further additions were made in the twentieth century and there was much rebuilding of bomb damage caused in 1944. The most important benefactor in the early twentieth century was Charles Fairfax Murray, a dealer in pictures and manuscripts and a copyist for Ruskin . Murray presented 46 paintings to the gallery mainly of English portraiture. (See also Ruskin and the Dulwich Gallery ). Ruskin used an early system of numbers attached to the paintings in his identification of works in

MAIN INDEX PAST EXHIBITIONS Masterpieces of Renaissance Art:
    Eight Rediscoveries
November 27-December 28, 2001 CATALOGUE This exhibition features eight extremely important sculptures by some of the leading artists of the Renaissance, including Andrea Mantegna, Desiderio da Settignano, Giambologna, and Antonio Rossellino. All these works are discoveries or rediscoveries: several of the works have never been seen in public before, and the others have not been exhibited for 100 years or more. Another immensely significant sculpture is Antonio Rossellino's St. Jerome in the Wilderness. Carved in marble around 1475, it is one of the most important pictorial reliefs of the Renaissance. The sculpture appears to have been in the collection of Cosimo I de' Medici in the Palazzo Vecchio, Florence in the sixteenth century. Also in the show is a full scale version of Giambologna's Medici Mercury. Other than the version in the Bargello, this is the only known period version of the bronze, and it perhaps can be identified with the version sent to Henri IV at the end of the sixteenth century. Desiderio da Settignano's relief of a Cherub's Head has not been seen since the Arthur Sambon sale in Paris in 1914. It may be the only surviving relief from Desiderio's celebrated Tabernacle of the Sacrament in San Pier Maggiore, Florence (which was destroyed in 1784).
