T he area now called Fairfax was originally part of the Mexican Land Grant, Canada de Herrera, consisting of 6,558 acres, conferred to Domingo Sais on August 10, 1839, in return for his military service under the government of Mexico. One of the first Europeans to settle in the area was a Virginian, Dr. Alfred W. Taliaferro, Marin's first and most beloved physician, who was given the park-like glen, the Marin Town and Country Club property, by Domingo Sais. A fellow Virginian, Charles S. Fairfax, also fell in love with the property when he paid the good doctor a visit. Taliaferro transferred the property to Fairfax and in 1855 Fairfax and his wife, Ada, made it their home. T he town of Fairfax derives its name from A man of honor, fiercely patriotic, never coveting his noble title, Charles Fairfax died in 1869 after traveling east as a delegate to the National Democratic Convention, at the home of his mother. After his death, his widow sold the property to Mary Owens and moved to Fort Ross. A piano was once raised to the platform in the tree and Irive Berline serenaded the guests dining below.

Victorian Art in Britain Charles Fairfax Murray Whilst researching the second generation of Pre-Raphaelites for this site, the name Charles Fairfax Murray has frequently been mentioned, and of course, he was a studio assistant to Edward Burne-Jones in the late 1860s. He was also known to supply painted backgrounds to Rossetti. Murray was a short, bustling, rather assertive individual. He had a real talent for producing portrait drawings of his friends. His output of pictures was very small, as it would seem he lacked confidence in his own artistic ability. In the 19th century Old Master drawings were very cheap, and Murray amassed a vast collection of them. The large part of these were bought en masse by J Pierpont Morgan (1837-1913), the American financier and banking magnate. Murray, due to his lack of confidence, became mainly known for his activities as a dealer and collector with excellent taste. He was a generous benefactor to the National Gallery and Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery.

Victorian Art in Britain Edward Robert Hughes Edward Robert Hughes was born in the Clerkenwell district of London on November the 5 th 1849, the only child of Edward Hughes, and Harriet, nee Foord. The Hughes family was Welsh, and seems to have been in the habit of marrying into the Foord family, as Arthur Hughes the painter, Edward’s uncle married one Trypheena Foord. Young Ted seems to have been drawn to his artistic uncle, who had a family of five, forming a social family circle for their solitary cousin. He shared Arthur Hughes artistic leanings, and his rather gentle retiring nature. Edward Hughes entered the Royal Academy Schools, and also seems to have had active encouragement from ‘Uncle Arthur.’ He was a conscientious hardworking student, who adopted a rigorous and thorough approach to his training. He became a member of an informal group of fellow students, who admired the watercolours of Edward Burne-Jones and wanted to emulate them. This group included Robert Bateman, Walter Crane, and Edward Clifford. Hughes also became close to Charles Fairfax Murray, who had initially trained to be an architectural draughtsman. Murray, who became a studio assistant to Burne-Jones, made an eloquent portrait drawing of his seventeen year old friend. In the obituary of Hunt in The Times, Edward Hughes was described as Hunt’s ‘Son In Art.’ Hughes was close to the whole Hunt family, painting portraits of the son Hilary, daughter Gladys, and a final portrait of Edith for her dying husband in 1909.
