Gem-like paintings Gerard David comes late in the list of Northern Renaissance masters. Van Eyck, Van der Weyden, and Memling are more famous and probably more original, but there are a lot of us who dearly love David's small, jewel-like paintings, especially the two versions of the Rest on the Flight into Egypt, one in New York and the other in Washington. Until recently it has been hard to find books with good reproductions of these two pictures, and the many other less-well-known but similarly charming pictures by David which are scattered throughout the museums of Europe. The works on paper, especially, have been nearly impossible for the average museum-goer to see, since they are almost always tucked away, accessible to only the lucky few. It is a pleasure, then, that the Metropolitan Museum of Art has decided to publish a book to document the work of this painter who has seemed until now much too elusive. And the Met has gone about the job with its usual skill and thoroughness. There are many paintings here that have probably never been reproduced before in a widely-available publication. They include some wonderful drawings and pencil studies, that give the lie to the idea that painters of David's era were tight or finicky some of the drawings of girls rival Watteau's for their lightness and casual perfection.

    Biographical Sketch
Hazel Munger Burke was born February 3 1900 and died May 16, 1989. She studied piano from an early age, but was unable to continue with more advanced study. She graduated from Cathedral High School in Rochester with a major in business and was subsequently employed as a secretary. She married Henry J. Burke, D.D.S. in 1925. She performed professionally as an accompanist for the Miles Ensign and Jack McDonald School of the Dance in Rochester during the 1930's and 1940's.
    Provenance
The collection was compiled by Hazel Munger Burke, a resident of Rochester New York and avid amateur musician. Thomas Burke, son of Hazel, received the collection upon his mother's death, donating it to Sibley Music Library in May 1995, shortly after his retirement to Rochester.
    Scope and Content
The collection represents a very fine private "piano bench" collection of popular sheet music of the first half of the twentieth century. It is very representative of the tastes of the era and the includes a typical selection of a variety of vocal and instrumental music. A area of particular interest is its holdings from the time of World War I and the 1920's. Piano rags and dances are also prominent. The collection gives a good insight into the musical tastes of the time as selected by a very capable amateur musician.

119-123 Louisiana Avenue Munger Meat Market One of Perrysburg's interesting downtown commercial buildings is this three unit structure, each unit painted a different pastel color. It is at 119-123 Louisiana Avenue. Like several other buildings in this old part of downtown, it is almost impossible to untangle who built it and when, in the 1800s. This writer is not even sure that it is not three units but built separately but now with a common façade. One suspicious clue is that the upper windows in the right unit are larger than the others. But most likely it (or they) replaced other earlier frame buildings torn down or lost to fire. James Manning Hall, merchant and one-time postmaster, owned all or part of the space in 1837. Other owners before the turn of the century were Jesse Norton, Gilbert Beach, George W. and John Hoffman and George and John Munger. The latter brothers operated a meat market at the 123 address for almost 50 years. In more modern times, Piatt's Bakery was a long-time fixture at 119 in the left unit. About the building itself, it is called transitional, between Greek Revival and commercial Italianate. Its most noticeable feature is the corbeled cornice at the roof line. Behind the flat-topped façade is a low-gable roof.

    Background
By Harold Bell Wright and his son, Gilbert Munger Wright, who used the pen name John Lebar. Wright did a lot to help his sons establish successful careers. He undoubtedly did the most, and agonized the most, trying to help Gilbert become successful as a writer and producer. Speculation that Gilbert wrote the entire book while Dad added only his name to help it sell better is not true. In a letter to his son, Norman, dated February 10, 1944, Wright gave these details:

Rawlins, Wyo., 1910, L. to R. Masonic Temple, Court House, and High School. As is suggested by the photographs on this and the preceding page, Rawlins at first was a bit wild. Undated photo of freighters in Rawlins. In July 1878 the town became for a short time the center of the scientific world when visitors from all over the world descended upon the area for a total eclipse of the sun. Among those who came was Thomas A. Edison who described his stay:
"There were astronomers from nearly every nation. We had a special car. The country at that time was rather new; game was in great abundance, and could be seen all day long from the car window, especially antelope. We arrived at Rawlins about 4 P.M. It had a small machine shop, and was the point where locomotives were changed for the next section. The hotel was a very small one, and by doubling up we were barely accommodated. My room-mate was Fox , the correspondent of the New York Herald. After we retired and were asleep a thundering knock on the door awakened us. Upon opening the door a tall, handsome man with flowing hair dressed in western style entered the room. His eyes were bloodshot, and he was somewhat inebriated. He introduced himself as `Texas Jack'Joe Chromondo
