Gray Sweeney In mid-November 1872, during intensely cold snowstorms at the summit of the Sierra Nevada near Donner Pass, an aspiring landscape painter from Connecticut sketched alongside one of the nation's most illustrious artists. "I am now sketching this place with [Albert] Bierstadt [1830-1902]," wrote Gilbert Munger. "We work from sunrise to sunset, muffled up to our eyebrows in furs....We are sketching in the snow, sketching snow-storms and snow effects....I am now familiar with the scenery and know where all the best things are." (1) He went on to relate that Bierstadt "wishes me to accompany him on his sketching tours," but while they stayed in contact over the next five years, (2) Munger and Bierstadt apparently did not sketch together again. While today we know much about Bierstadt, Munger's name and artistic achievements had been generally forgotten until recently. In his day he was a highly regarded painter in New York, San Francisco, and London. He socialized with leading scientists and artists. But like many artists of his generation he went largely unnoticed in the twentieth century. His rediscovery by scholars and collectors is a story in which the Internet has played an important part.

Artist in Residence Traditional wood carving is alive at the Maritime Museum! with Gilbert Paquet, wood sculptor "The Rescue" BIOGRAPHY Munger Theatre exterior At age sixteen, Gilbert enrolled in the Saint Jean Port Jolie Art School located in a town of the same name where many residents made their living making sculptures. The town was previously known for its shipbuilding trade which all but disappeared many years before the school was formed. Gilbert attended this school for three years studying drawing and learning a traditional form of carving. The central focus of art taught at the school was sculpture of all sizes from small pieces to those of monumental scale. Wood was the main media used, but metal, stone and bronze casting was also incorporated into the curriculum. Gilbert credits what he learned here as providing the lifelong skills that he would apply to several occupations. SBMM Entrance Doors Gilbert returned to school to major in film making at the University of Quebec, in Montreal. After he graduated, he satisfied his desire to travel by coming to the United States, eventually ending up in Los Angeles, designing and building movie sets for the motion picture industry. He was introduced to beautiful Santa Barbara by a friend at a time when he was ready to get back to his purely artistic endeavors. He resolved to make a living in Santa Barbara by returning to creating sculptures. He also worked as a finish carpenter on special projects for contractors and homeowners.

Mount Shasta as a Visual Resource Early Artists Mostly limited to artists born before 1900. A list of approximately 175 artists whose artwork depicts Mount Shasta, but does not include photographers. This is an ongoing list updated as of December 1991. Compiled from various sources including auction records, exhibition catalogs, art books, art gallery exhibitions, private collections, etc. Note that Titian Ramsay Peale (1799-1885), traveling southward as naturalist with the 1841 Wilkes-Emmons overland expedition, lost his sketching materials while crossing the Umpqua Mountains in southern Oregon. No depiction of Mount Shasta by Peale is known to exist. Thus only his fellow expedition members, the world-reknowned geologist James Dwight Dana and the official expedition artist Alfred Thomas Agate, both of whom did sketch Mount Shasta, share the honor of creating the earliest bona-fide pictures of Mount Shasta. GILBERT MUNGER Am. 1837-1903 The Cliff House...California Oil on canvas 15" x 30" Estimate $9000/12000 Sold At Auction This is a rare, early and particularly beautiful California canvas (1868 as it is dated) that achieves some of the lyrical qualities of the artist's eastern brethren in the luminist tradition: the tight brushstrokes in the water and sky, the horizontal composition, the endless horizon, the almost supernatural (and not yet smoggy) light.
