Sergio Mendes says he cannot recall how the idea of interweaving two female singers into a unified lead vocal came to mind back in 1965. By 1968, however, millions of music enthusiasts in the U.S. instantly recognized that the stylish, acrylic-clear deliveries of Karen Philipp and Lani Hall - the future wife of record mogul Herb Alpert - belonged to Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66. In that year, Brasil '66 scored three Top 20 pop hits, including two Top Ten smashes, "The Look Of Love" (No. 4) and "The Fool On The Hill" (No. 6), as well as "Scarborough Fair," which peaked at No. 16. Interestingly, "Scarborough Fair" already had been a Top 20 hit for Simon & Garfunkel in early 1968.

William Morris was one of the founders of the Arts and Crafts Movement and closely involved with the Pre-Raphaelite artists of the mid-19th century. His ideal of integrating art, literature and graphic design inspired a generation of artists like Rossetti, Burne-Jones, Millais and Waterhouse. Morris was an artist, poet, writer and designer himself. He is probably best remembered for his fabric designs and his book designs for Kelmscott Press. He pioneered modern renderings of antique styles of type as well as the production of high-quality home furnishings to last for generations. Morris left behind a lasting legacy of quality and creativity which will continue to inspire artists for years to come. The Scriptorium's Morris collection includes an excellent selection of Morris' fabric designs and patterns, plus a collection of original fonts based on his type designs for books published by the Kelmscott Press. We have recently augmented the collection with new fonts, new patterns and the addition of a large selection of decorative borders, emblems and initials. Morris fabric patterns are excellent for use in web page design. They can be made into contiguous tiles for use as backgrounds on web pages, as we have done with the grape pattern on this page. They also make excellent backdrops for decorative pages in print. Each of the patterns in our Morris collection is a high-resolution image and suitable for use online or in print. Above you can see the original patterns from the collection. The new patterns added in the latest update are shown to the left.

ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED 12/10/99 Boy, I hope you people wanna hear about cartoon voices. If not, I'm going to bore you silly with this column and next week's sequel. I know some of you are interested. 167 weeks ago, I did a piece on the cartoon voices, with emphasis on how one might beat the rather formidable odds against getting a job doing them. It is, to date, the POV most requested by those who either missed or mislaid it and want a copy. Some requests have come from folks who aspire to become cartoon voice artists. Others are from actors established in that field, seeking something they can hand out so they don't have to explain it for the eight-zillionth time. (That should tip you off as to what the competition is like...) I heard from a lot of cartoon fans who, like me, have always been fascinated about those speak for our favorite characters. I grew up loving the sounds and sensibilities of folks like Mel Blanc, Daws Butler, June Foray and Don Messick. I was very proud that I eventually got to know and, God help us, direct those people. Actually, I became a cartoon voice director for a simple reason, which I'll get to in some future installment. This time out, we have some history to wade through... As we all know, the first commercially-released cartoon with sound was

London, England 1834) William Morris was born in Walthamstow, London in 1834. He was educated at Marlborough School and Exeter College, Oxford. He spent a year working for G. E. Street, where he initiated a lifelong friendship with Philip Webb, Street's chief assistant. A prime mover in the establishment of the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings, Morris fought to save buildings from a prevalent, but destructive policy of "restoration". He was the founder and leader of the socialist league, as well as the founder of the Kelmscott Press which specialized in designing lettering and borders, and publishing English literature, both classic and contemporary. Morris considered art "the expression of man's joy in his labour". This principle inspired a generation of disciples. References

Morris, William Morris, William, , English poet, artist, craftsman, designer, social reformer, and printer. He has long been considered one of the great Victorians and has been called the greatest English designer of the 19th cent. While at Oxford, Morris, along with his lifelong friend Edward Burne-Jones , became deeply interested in the ritual and architecture of the Middle Ages. However, Morris's great awakening came through his readings of John Ruskin , whose ideas on aestheticism and social progress he gradually adopted. In 1856, after being apprenticed to an architect, Morris attached himself to the brotherhood of Pre-Raphaelites and through the encouragement of Dante Gabriel Rossetti began to paint and write. In 1858 he published his first volume of poems, The Defence of Guenevere and Other Poems.
